The joke is based on a sad joke from the movie Watchmen (Pagliacci). And that joke is based on a Spanish poem called "Reír Llorando" (Cry Laughing) from the Mexican poet Juan De Dios Pesa.
God I adore this podcast so much. Littered throughout all the silliness and goofiness is a perfect balance of genuinely intelligent and interesting discussion. It's just incredible

As much as I liked the the VFX artists react series at the start (and continue to watch it), I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't getting a bit stale for me as well.
