How To Refill Vintage Trico Windshield Wipers

- Many years ago, when this older style of windshield wipers were still common, a guy could walk into the local auto parts store, and pick up a pair of wiper blade refills, instead of individual replacement assemblies. Fast forward to current times, the refills are becoming more difficult to find. I ended up buying a set of 16" OER brand refills for my 1981 Silverado at Classic Industries, so lets install them!
Note: I also demonstrate how to install Anco refills, which were the common brand I could find, while they were still being stocked.

Glad you got this vintage windshield refilled
Thank you!
I had to replace my passenger's one last year. The little rubber grommet that holds the arm to the mount disintegrated. It really wasn't all that hard to replace, just needed a ratchet set and a new wiper arm from the junkyard.
No rubber grommets on the '81! I did have the spring that holds the wiper to the windshield break on the driver's side arm, and got a NOS GM to replace it. This one requires a special tool to remove the arms, without scratching them all up.
Yep, I remember playing with those refills back in the day. Not the most fun, often quite fiddly. That's one thing they most certainly have improved upon since.
I can't remember, does the Silverado have the washer pump that is driven by the wiper motor? Sure looks like it. That's the same type in the Bluick.
Indeed, I have slipped, and cut my finger doing this. Good thing I don't have to perform this task too often!
Yes, it has the washer pump driven off the wiper motor. They kept that design for decades! There are three rubber lines attached to the end. One to pump from the tank, and one output for each nozzle.
@@dynatrak It's funny, because my 81 actually had a separate washer pump. It was rather noisy, but it still worked.
I bought the same refills from OER for my 64 Ford Galaxie. I still have the highly polished trico wiper retainers. I hate it when you have the polished arm and black blades.
These are still holding up great. I found the correct wiper holders for my truck, after dealing with the black ones for many years. It looks so much better now!
