NileRed No hard feelings though, its just weird to see the face of someone who you only know the name of!
These videos are great btw
+NileRed can you give us a link to how to make the ampules?
25????? You look like 19 at most
Oh yeah, sure Ill do thatn ow.
In college we had an experiment to do with bromine. I had to bring a container from under the hood to a counter and had a “whiff” of bromine in the nose and it burnt for like 2 weeks. I also had a drop somehow going through my glove and making a blister. This was definitely too dangerous of a substance for college teens.
Wow that’s crazy I hope ur hand and nose is ok
We did that in school in India
See that's why you gotta be careful with science elements
loved the face reveal and especially the lab reveal. I guess I imagined something more sterile, white, and futuristic - it was fun to see something more like my electronics workshop at home!
Yeah, it isn't too crazy. I would like to have a better more modern work area though. It stops me from doing a lot of experiments, especially ones that absolutely require a fumehood.
"Absolutely require a fumehood". The fumehood is another topic for another video. ♥
Kevin has started a go fund me campaign to get the other end revealed too, he's been waiting for 5 whole years, but it seems he's the only one putting money into it, nobody else seems interested in NileRear lol..
@@NileRed well look at you now
Now it is
Bromine's always been one of my favorite elements, but Fluorine will always be my favorite. Halogens are obviously my favorite group.
Bromine and iodine are sometimes used in halogen lamps. An electric current is passed through a filament, and the halogen interacts with the metal filament, producing a higher temperature and longer lifespan light -> higher luminosity. Pretty neat, eh? :) I do prefer LEDs, as diodes are typically more efficient.
2:46...Nile..you definitely do have "crazy fans" going at this moment...
I love these element series and I am actually in my final year of high school and plan (as of now) to go into chemistry. I love watching your synthesis and have actually slowly been purchasing my own equipment. If you would ever do more educational videos just explaining general chemistry and things that would be amazing. Love watching your videos and you do a fantastic job!

I really like these elemental series. I was always very interested in what each of the elements might look like and how'd they'd behave. Hope to see more elements in the future.
The element series are really informative, you should do them more often. After i watched the white phosphorus one, i looked all over the channel for more episodes but there were none, it's nice you brought it back

The best thing about Nile Red's videos is that he never "blows stuff up" gratuitously. As far as I can tell, he really cares about the chemistry. If a reaction or a substance happens to be dangerous, he may still show it, but not because it is dangerous but because it is interesting in some other way. And the camera work is awesome. I like to take pictures of my element collection, but I REALLY need to upgrade my camera.
I think that's actually the absolute most unexpected intro I've seen in my life.
Wow. Totally unexpected. I've been watching all your videos for a long time. It was really great to see you. Thank you for another wonderful video. keep uploading them :)
I like this format. Your videos are all very informative and entertaining and produced very well. Keep up the great work!
My son watches your channel regularly and so do I. I always thought, that the presentation is very nice. Your personal appearance in the video makes it look even more professional. It destinguishes your channel from the other chemistry channels.
Hey NileRed, I'm a high-school student and I love your videos. I'm taking H.S. level chemistry this year and I've already got the knowledge to easily pass and probably score advanced on the state test.
Your videos are very advanced but it's fun to make sense of all the weird chemistry-talk. I'm also using your videos to learn nomenclature. I'm planning on going to college for chemistry, because I love science, and chemistry seems like the coolest most hands-on (more pure) science.
My chemistry teacher is also assisting me in going really in-depth with a lot of this stuff, and allowing me to stay in for part of lunch to use the lab for other things, though I haven't quite gotten any chemicals out yet, only working with Bunsen burners because my school is too poor to afford hot-plates. Though hopefully I will go far in competition for science this year.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I love your videos and they have made me very enthusiastic about chemistry. I've always loved the more pure sciences, though I haven't ever decided which ones I liked more. I think chemistry will certainly be my choice in the future! :)
Hey you still use this account? Pretty clear you graduated, wanted to know how you’re doing now that it’s been 7 years..

Thank you, you know that bromine is my favorite element. And it's the first time I've seen you and you are so young. Nice to meet you.
So found this channel at the beginning of 2017. Thought it was pretty cool and I was taking organic chemistry at the time so I said why not. Started from the oldest to the newest videos. Finally got to this one and I’m am shook.
I'm Korean and it's amazing to see the liquid called bromine. I found out about bromine today. Thank you for the good information.
Bromine is used as a second sensitizer“ in case of daguerreotype. It’s combine with anhydrous lime. So that the polished silver plate can be fumed and turn into silver halogen to make a daguerreotype. There are still other steps to do in order to bring the image to life.
video idea!
Hmm.. interesting. I've often wondered how daguerreotype images were taken.

I learn so much on this channel! Thank u and it makes learning chemistry so much more fun. I love ur voice.
That was just awesome and I am more then happy with the format. Sure, the "how to acquire" and typical application makes some elements not fitted for the format, but I think there are plenty of elements that are interesting and can be obtained reasonable. When does elements are covered, then the format can off-course change, but I acctually like, that you have shown an relatively easy to obtain element, showing that chemistry is work and requires safety procedures, but it is not that complicated.

Hey man I love your videos! It would be cool to see more synthesis of chemicals which are more readily available for everyone... For example an extraction of eugenol from cloves or something, with side videos on making the solvents (I know you have a few solvent videos already) keep up the great stuff!
Yeah, working with bromine is always fun... I remember one experiment I had to do a few years back in university, simple addition of bromin to fumaric acid. Thats when I learned the hard way, that bromine basically does not have a surface tension, something I never thought about ^o^
I blanked out for a second and turned the stopcock of the addition funnel the wrong way and in that following half second that I noticed and closed the funnel as fast as I never closed it ever again ;) , all 9g of bromine went *whoosh* in the flask with boiling water... One second later the (secured) stopper went *puff* and all of the gaseous bromine filled the fume hood where I luckily could contain most of it so nobody needed to be evacuated... that was a lot of fun, let me tell you, who needs scary movies for an early heart attack :D
The links you wanted to add below the video btw. was for the making of the bromine and putting in the ampule (around 1:55)
And concerning the improvment of your videos I can only say that showing you cute face more often definitly wouldn't be a bad thing ;)

If I remember correctly Bromine was also used as a fire retardant in some plastics. It's why some consoles like the SNES, OG PlayStation, and other white consoles from the 80's, 90's and early 00's turned yellow over time
Imagine a bromine spring in a fictional setting.
"It just broke through one day. The plants withered and died, the people and animals fled... It's just a wasteland of withered snags and brown mist. Some say they've seen shapes moving in the mist, but we can't send anything in there to check."

I never expected Nile to look so Nile.... Your face definetly fits the channel man!
Hi Nile, I thought of an interesting display you might want to do for a video that could look pretty neat. Back during my first year of undergrad chemistry, we had two lab sessions on the preparation of the solid Potassium Trisoxalatoferrate Trihydrate, and I remember it being a really neat series of reactions to observe. I can't find the manual showing the steps at the time being, but I could find it with time, I just wanted to let you know before the thought slipped my mind. It might be a neat experiment in coordination chemistry. You can also include a titration test for purity, to add to the complexity if you want.
Interestingly, you look exactly like I imagined you to be. And since you've done this, it'd be lovely if you could show us your lab (aka a lab tour).
I look exactly like you imagined? Interesting.

The bromine vapor looks super cool
1:30 lol. This reminded me of something that happened in my science class, with iodine. That drawer has never been the same.
The very word bromine sends shivers down my spine. Can't forget those days in the pharma industry when it used to make my eyes and nose water, choke my lungs and throat. Safety isn't a priority in developing countries.
CZcams teaches me much more better than my teachers :"). Thank u so much!

Great video Nile! I like the new format! Also i love the idea of element series. Was gonna comment "where is the lab coat?" but you put one on! :) Maybe do a total noob series for us that know nothing about chemistry but want to learn. Things about lab equipment for example. Safety. Maybe a few really (and i mean really) guerilla experiments that we can do for kids. That don`t require actual laboratories.
A small tip for focus. Put something where you are going to stand and focus on it before recording. This way you will avoid the actual focus being on the background. You`ll avoid people getting their eyes stuck on the shelves behind you instead of looking at you. :)
All in all great video though! Feel free to ask if you need lighting tips if you indent to put our more of videos in this format. There are some very easy ways to make the production value of the videos jump without expensive gear.
Also love the pleasant and clean audio! Keep up the great work!
thanks for the input! This was my first time filming a person really, so it was a little bit frustrating. I tried to pre-focus where I would be standing, but meh. I really should do a total noob series. Ill try to get on that at some point...I am very slow though, so i am not sure when that would be!
NileRed Sweet! Also don`t worry about the on camera frustration. It goes away faster then you think!

Thanks for making this video, it is amazing that you did a face reveal, makes the viewing experience feel very different, i was wondering whether you might make propan-1-ol from propan-2-ol so that it would be easier to, for example make propyl acetate. Anyway just a thought.great job and keep up the good work!
You are amazing and your experiments are too good and your voice to tell something about metals is ausom .
Can you please tell another metals like that
I liked it! You did well face to camera for a long video like this and your composure was seamless compared with your annotated videos. Though, I am not sure I like the annotated videos "more" or that I am just used to them. I wouldn't say doing a complete transition over to this form would be my preference. That being said though, you would NOT lose a subscriber because of it nor would I be any less enthusiastic for future videos when they drop. The non-personal aspect of seeing only the labware and apparatus adds a bit of a clinical feel to the video and removes and bit of subjective feel and I kind of like that. If that makes any sense?? lol
Same with NurdRage, Doug and (sady gone) Chem Player.
