im Portuguese, i live about 20 mins from the main stage in Fafe, the one from the crazy fans are, my dad said back in Group B days there was basicly about 1 milion people there, on a full weekend camp, drinking alcohool like crazy, and when the cars came it was basicly a daredevil challenge to see who could stay longer and some actually being able to touch the car has it was passing by, some people even lost fingers partially while doing that. In sum, crazy but glorious times.
Portugal was crazy, specially in the Sintra region where Joaquim Santos killed a bunch of spectators with his Ford RS200 I wasn't born yet at that time but I do remember my father telling me stories of how awesome Group B was back then.

Portugal fans were mad crazy. A pair of brothers friends of my father were there at Portugal on that fateful stage were the RS200 went off. They were actually right on the next corner from where that accident happened. They told how when they got alongside everyone else to the carsh site the driver was still inside the car and how you could feel the shock he was going through after that. 3 spectators were killed and some 30 ish or something like that were injured.
On the roads, the spectacle was total. The fight between the pilots was fierce causing a real craze around the rally. The public gathered in large numbers on the side of the roads. There were several tens of thousands at each round standing along the track, without any safety device, waiting for the passage of the best pilots on the planet who, launched at dizzying speeds on relatively loose ground, passed by just inches from the crowd. The less informed spectators even challenged each other. One of the most recurrent was to get as close as possible to the car as it passed and hope to touch it when it tumbled in front of their eyes. Achieving this seemed to provide a great sense of pride. But at what cost. This most dangerous game indeed caused many dramas and some of the least careful spectators found themselves with fingers, hands or even feet torn off.
And the driver was an amazing 1 and the car to so yeah shit happens.
Just soo you have an idea the driver was good good that the team dispensed the mechanic that fixes the body parts cose the driver never crashed.. the only time that he crashed was that time...
And I think he was in prison by homicide but I'm not sure
@@xabussas1362 don't know about the guy, but about the car. I got to see that RS200 last year at the Rallyspirit in Barcelos (Portugal). To get to see that very car was especial, is not a thing you get to watch everyday
There was a custom back then to try and touch the moving car as it passed near you, and (I kid you not), the mechanics at the pit stop, often removed...severed spectator's fingers from the chassis! There's even a video on YT where Finnish or Swedish mechanics discuss it! Also the 1986 accident at the Portugal Rally (where three spectators were killed and dozens were injured) and the death of Henri Toivonen (driver) and Sergio Cresto (co-driver) again at the 1987 Portugal Rally, were the final nails on Class B's coffin
Toivonen and Sergio both died at Corsica Rally not in Portugal, but yeah man, the severed fingers stories are mad, can you imagine just wanted to work on the car and see literal parts of fingers in the car? Jeez💀

Despite all the craziness you see here, there were hardly any accidents involving spectators in Rally Portugal. The day there was, Group B ended.
Marku Allen said that after a few times driving here he stopped lifting off the throttle when he saw that sea of spectators, he just kept it floored because he knew they were going to move out of the way. The portuguese driver of the white and yellow Renault Supercinco Turbo had less confidence in the portuguese public than the foreign drivers. 🙂
7:07 that Ford RS 2000 on that very same race, on that very same day in 1986, some miles ahead in Sintra, Portugal, marked the end of Group B, that car lost control after avoiding some guy and killed at least 6 people, one of them was a pregnant woman, that was the fatidic race that marked the beginning of the end, and unfortunately, showed that one of those accidents was something that was just waiting to happen, I was there in 1986 at that race.

Many would say that it was Portuguese and Italian spectators who were a very important factor that group B disappeared. Such conditions have never been seen in Finland or England. And as you say yourself, the driver was never blamed if someone was hit, but people died too, and then it does not help that the driver is told that it was not his / her fault. And if I do not remember completely wrong, then I think 1985 was the worst year of accidents. And in 1987, Group B ended.
I remember seeing some in car footage from portugal. Now that *was* scary.

Conor. Here in the UK, every motorsport event I have ever watched had warning signs posted around stating "Motorsports are dangerous. Spectators enter at their own risk.". Insurance reasons dictate this.n

Rally Cars don't have axles, they have drive shafts coming from a early type Limited slip differential at the rear, modern Rally cars are now 4 wheel drive.

Group B was great ...but surprice even now race this other rally class Hill climb mosters Yes there are Audi S1 and others!! Do not miss 09:00 this car. Check Europan Hill climb races.
Connor, there were car races that were similar to the Isle of Man TT back in the day. Races like the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio, these being discontinued due to safety concerns.
The Mille Miglia was last run in 1957. That year there were two fatal crashes, one of which involved spectators.
The most famous Mille Miglia was the 1955 race, won by Sir Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson. There's a video you should really watch. Idk if you will be able to do a reaction about it because it has a soundtrack on it. It is WRC - A Change of Seasons by Antti Kalhola ( czcams.com/video/r3-BbBBzLG4/video.html ). It shows a side of rally racing that is not obvious in many many videos with footages from the side of the roads : wonderful views from drones and helicopters with beautiful landscapes. :)

this cars were on another level. Groupe B was baned because of madness of this cars and spectators. i think two ford rs200 cars killed some people in 1986 and cherry on top was accident of Henri Toivonen in corsica i think. Driver Henri Toivonen and codriver... they both died.
Yes, the last two nails in the coffin were exactly those. First the crash at Portugal that killed 3 spectators and injured a few dozen and then Toivonen's major crash in Corsica that killed both him and the co-driver.
But, to be fair, portuguese were overkill back then, just left a dictatorship that lasted some 50 years and were experiencing with freedom, quite a lot lol

@João Batista Well....Anglo's comment is just borderline typical british racism. Anyhow, we had just left a dictatorship that lasted 50 plus years, people were experimenting with their new acquired freedoms, most of those people on these images are like our grandparents and such. Nowadays if you go to Rally de Portugal in Fafe, people don't get that close to the track. I usually shot some rally photos here in Madeira and we all avoid turn exit points, I was almost killed once xD jumped into a pit with the camera gear and all hahahaha bur it was my fault, I was right on the exit of the turn and almost got hit by a Lancer VII =P
