  • Hey everyone!
Hope you're all well and hydrated. It's been a minute since the last lesson, but here it is! Let's take a look at how we can possibly be better at trying to make use of the content of "licks" as opposed to copy pasting it all the time.

Hi Anthony, super useful lesson as usual. I would love to see your process of learning a jazz standard that has parts where you have two chords per bar (oleo, for example) and if when soloing you outline all the changes or you ignore some. When i solo over a tune like oleo or St Thomas my phrasing feels very limited.

Great question man, I'd love to hear his thoughts on this also. I find licks become almost like a safety net during tunes like rhythm changes and others that follow the 2 chord per bar progression format.

My bass teacher once said “imitate, assimilate, innovate”, which I think you’re alluding to here. I mean, I then went on to completely ignore that, and do exactly what you and him are saying _not_ to do, but still. I think the main thing, and it applies to any music where you might improvise a little, or a lot, is to make anything you do make _sense,_ melodically and rhythmically, in the context of the music you’re doing, instead of just noodling on notes that technically ‘fit’.
