Craig Burley: Saka hasn't done it at the highest level like Foden has. ?? Foden has 4 goals for England in 38 appearances, Saka has 11 in 37 appearances. So perhaps reassess that opinion. Foden and Saka are both world class players and I'd start them both. No disrespect to Palmer and Gordon but they do not have the credentials to start - although they are excellent players and can be very effective as subs. England's front 4 have been ineffective because they don't get the ball played forward quickly enough. The structure of the team is too defensive to get Foden and Saka on the ball up front where they can hurt defenses. Play Bellingham and Rice as a double pivot and play a much higher defensive line and forward press. That's a structure where you will see Foden and Saka playing like they do for Man City and Arsenal because that's the structure their club teams play.
i liked saka more than foden this tournament.

I think that he’s just a bit stubborn and stuck in his ways. He found a system that offered some success with a group of players but that group of players has changed almost completely. Hence his lamenting the lack of a Phillips replacement.
He needs to adapt his tactics, but I don’t think he has it in him and the pressure of having such big reputations in the squad is preventing him from making objective choices.
Still let’s hope we win but it’s rather like watching England rugby side from the past few years where they play dull up and under rugby and not an exciting free flowing style which we all hope Is possible.

IT WOULDNT MATTER WHAT ENGLAND DID IT WILL BE CRITISISED. They are progressing and growing into the tournament. Italy, Germany, Belgium, Portugal and other good teams have been knocked out. keep it real. England have a chance in every game they play now as do their opponents. I am not a huge fan of Southgate however i have liked him more and more since this tournament started. My criticism is more about leaving Rashford and any other left back out of the squad and playing Tripier at left back. Growing? I don’t see any growth. It’s just individuals who decide every game and because they have the best individuals they could easily reach the final without playing good and without playing as a team and without good tactics. There is no way England will match Switzerland's midfield despite having quality midfielders than Switzerland. They just don't know what they are doing. The game will we be won in the middle of the park. Bellingham is not a 10. Bellingham is a central midfielder (8) so why does he keep playing high???. The problem is he can't give the team a structure and play the players in their natural position.

That way England could attack in a 343 and defend in a 442. It wouls have walker covering for trent. Bellingham as a 8, so foden can cut inside and allow shaw to make overlaps. Even though is a 3 cbs it would be good to keep possesion, just look at how Pep have organized city in the past, at times with 4 cb.
Of course this is southgate, so if he plays 343 I wouldnt be to help keep possesion, it would focus on giving the ball away and defend.

If you don't use wingbacks then go Gomez at left back or risk Shaw. Our left side has been our biggest problem. And for God's sake if you want to win this thing drop the golden boy Foden. I would like to see a coach in professional football that actually doesnt behave like a player on the field whenever his team scores a goal. You are a mature manager and we dont want to see you jumping up and down. These coaches should learn and take a note from the professional hockey coaches where they always look serious and they only celebrate with the team once they win the whole tournament. They leave those individual goal celebrations for the players.

Kane‘s gonna drop back into the midfield so most of the time it’s gonna be a 361. After 4 attempts his selections & tactics aren't working and he is now desperate to get a functional team to play the Swiss. Whichever way he shuffles his team selection and tactical setup I cannot see him succeeding

What was the root cause this England starting 11 has not performed well? My observations are that 1) the England's midfielders in particular Foden and Saka need to run more and offer themselves as passing options all the time for the back line and each other so that the defenders don't have to pass side ways and backwards; 2) they need to think faster and pass the ball quicker and more often than dribble it, in particular Foden and Rice. Southgate is clueless if he cannot command his midfielders to do a better running and passing. Thus far in this tournament, Foden has been disappointing. He needs to forget about that he's the best player of the premier league; instead he needs to focus on playing proper and better football. He needs to run more and offer himself in the midfield as a passing option; he needs to improve the accuracy of his deliveries...the list goes on and on. Otherwise Foden will become another one of disappointing English football players who are hyped when they're young but never get better when they get older.
