  • In an effort to eliminate nitrous, and improve low end power and lower short track times, we built this compound turbo setup for the Grannas Racing Supra.
    The setup consists of a Precision NextGen 6670 (66mm little brother) and a Precision Promod 9808 (98mm big brother) twin turbo setup
    Big thanks to Precision Turbo for supporting this insane build, and also thank you to TiCon/Stainless Bros. for supporting us with all the 321 and Titanium fabrication materials.
    The entire setup was designed by us to fit in a compact location while maintaining "Supra single turbo aesthetic" and fabricated by our lead fab guy, John Evans. All fab work was done in house at Grannas Racing with some design insights and inspiration from Duy Bui's taco truck which has proven the setup to work well.

    Cool thing! On very simplified you think compound setup as you select HP turbo for the spool you desired and LP for the maximum power you want. And actually HP turbo does not give more air but it multiplies boost coming in from the LP turbo....for example you run LP turbo 2bar boost (PR 3 on sealevel) and HP turbo "1bar" (PR2), that gives you total pressure ratio 6 and on sea level it is 5bar minus atmosphere 1bar, so boost gauge say 4bar of boost. Optimum is to keep the load between the stages pretty even so overall effiency is good but that usually need some try and error. :)

      The big turbo feeding the smaller one increases the pressure substantially. That's why. If other way around the pressure would decrease

    • @arthurloretta-seaton8522
      @arthurloretta-seaton8522 Před 9 měsíci +2

      Best explanation is if you look at a jet engine it looks like an hour glass. Air comes in large and is compressed down, hot exhaust comes out of small and into bigger turbine

    • @alexsaam2696
      @alexsaam2696 Před 9 měsíci +1

      I've also seen two small turbos feeding one large so still get quick spool time but the pressure increase cause the two small turbos together are bigger than the one large turbo. Those setup are unreal. Pushing close to 100 psi and thousands of HP

    • @ArthurSperotto
      @ArthurSperotto Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@alexsaam2696 But are we chasing pressure or airflow? Airflow makes power, not pressure. Compressor wheels have speed limits and flow limits, you can't feed a GT30 with a promod 108, it'll explode lol. Hence my confusion. I've only ever seen sequential turbos where the small feeds the big. Not the other way around.

    • @boostedgringo5885
      @boostedgringo5885 Před 9 měsíci

      Actually you could feed a gt30 with a 98 if you have enough wastegate to bypass it. You might not be able to light off the 98 but it certainly won’t explode it. I feed gt30 with a g42 1200 and it works great.

  • @jimbojimson
    @jimbojimson Před měsícem

    It is simpler to divert as much exhaust gas to the big turbo as possible and take the small turbo out once the big one is spooled, running it more like a sequential how you were describing, but that does also eliminate one of the big advantages of a compound turbo system. It probably isn't relevant here, but on smaller engines especially, one of the huge benefits is the ability to balance the pressure ratios between both turbos and avoid surge. You may be able to run a massive amount of flow on a 2.0L engine, for example, that'll ultimately end up being a 5:1 pressure ratio and would experience horrible open throttle surge if you ran only the big turbo. By using a compound turbo system, you can have both turbos running at a 2.24:1 pressure ratio to equal a 5:1 ratio at the manifold, but both turbos are kept in the middle of the compressor map and you avoid surge altogether.

    If you use the turbos the other way around , big feeding the small turbo, I know it sounds backwards , but it works better. The big turbo feeding the small makes it so even when the big turbo isn’t spooled up fully because it pushes more air , the small is constantly spooked and in turn gives you no lag. Once the small reaches its limit have an electronic valve redirect the air away from the small and into the intercooler from the big itself .. you will get the benefits of no lag and massive top end power with only 1 more section of pipe and a electronic valve… you can use a turbo smart straight gate as the valve and they flow and work perfectly .. anyways it’s a sick build either way and I’m definitely subscribing and staying tuned to see what else you guys do

    Love the compound boost, I do it with a large turbo feeding a small supercharger on a 1L engine. The twin gates below the small turbo is really cool idea. Lots of exhaust flow happening so it's hard to say how it will all work. Remember the large turbo will be helping the small turbo spin so it will need less exhaust so it may be more efficient for the exhaust to go through the small turbo then the gates. Super curious how it all works out! Amazing fab, all the welds look exhausting (pun intended) :)

    So I designed built and race a compound bike and not having an intercooler between them is dumb. We run anywhere from 35-90ishpsi depending on gear ect and were talking 100s of degrees difference having two cores over just the one. Space and weight are huge for us so to bite the bullet and add the second core and ducting ect had to really be worth it and it was a good 30% we left on the table until we realized and were on e85 chilled with dry ice to -80°f on a blow through carb setup and it still made a huge difference for us. Now I'm limited by turbo size so my efficiency is pretty shit by the time I get both into the 3bar range so its exacerbated but I think you might consider it. The efficiency of the primary turbo goes down the drain fast once its getting preheated air.

    You get compounds cuz your big turbo can't efficiently move the volume/mass of air you want, so adding the little turbo increases potential pressure ratio. And having two turbos for different engine speeds, of course, but you were pretty clear on that part
    Have you thought about wrapping the exhaust? That's a lot of exposed exhaust pipe underhood and near other components, let alone how long that run is to the primary; you're losing at least a little efficiency there, which could be the difference between winning and losing as I'm sure you already know

    so do the two wastegates feed into the exhaust after the small turbo to help spool the big one even faster? or do they just dump exhaust because that kind of seems like the drive pressure in the header would be high enough to overcome the drive pressure into the big turbo and help spool even more and then the dump on the big turbo could just eliminate pressure anyways

    You will lose power up top at the same boost level, that's because the primary induction will be providing all of your air flow. It will increase your torque curve down low all the way up to the boost level you were running, but when you get to that level, the airflow, or rather the efficiency of the big turbo will be lower, because it will be at a lower P/R individually than it was by itself. There are two ways you can get around that. Run more overall boost or get a bigger primary induction (big turbo). You want a primary induction that is at the right efficiency for the P/R that it is running by itself before going into the smaller turbo. Also remember that the P/Rs are multiplied, not added. Think of it this way. The smaller turbo is just running using much denser air. So whatever the bigger turbo is doing with the air, the smaller turbo is treating that air like it's ambient. If it's a 2.0 P/R on the big turbo, the little turbo will be doing what it normally does times 2, but that's not taking into account the hotter compressed air from the primary turbo.

    IMHO While spooling the small turbo will face shocking due to inlet feed rout, while the big turbo start pushing air will face restrictions due to small turbo housing, would be better ideal if it stage RPM base setup with gate switching. Good luck though
