    Awesome trip report, as always! You wrote that it shouldn’t qualify as EC - it shouldn’t even qualify as an IC service. Unfortunately the Hungarian carrier’s management (n the government’s people in charge) totally forgot what IC should be like. Stopping at every village is not even “rapid” category, especially with carriages that were mostly designed for commuter services.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 6 měsíci +8

      Thanks so much! Yes, you're right. Unfortunately, we also have similar trains here in the Czech Republic, which are qualified as EuroCity and don't meet the criteria :-D

    • @budapestkeleti6404
      @budapestkeleti6404 Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@PeteBrandy to be fair the EC criteria doesn't really work for the small states in Central and Eastern Europe. In Hungary there aren't really cities outside the capital that could qualify to be served by EC trains. In the Babišská republika are only Brno and Ostrava. In Slovenia it's only Ljubljana.
      On the other hand the Hungarian national operator went to the direction that it fuses commuter and IC trains so they serve more stops with worse quality rolling stock

    I am very glad that you made this video of this flight. I often travel with it between Budapest and Miskolc when I visit my relatives. Most of the time I travel in the ZSSK 1st class car (which you also travel in), because with a 1st class ticket I can use the business lounge at Budapest-Keleti railway station.
    This train runs in Hungary under the name HERNÁD-ZEMPLÉN InterCity. It stops at Mezőkövesd, because the mayor of the city asked the MÁV to stop these trains, there was no other direct train to Budapest (only passenger trains in the morning). It stops in Hatvan because the Rákos-Hatvan railway line was recently renovated, and with this stop you can get to the city of Hatvan every 20 minutes. That is why it runs in Hungary as InterCity.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I had this route and this train on my wish list for a long time. I like international trains that run on non-corridor lines. Next time I also have to visit the lounge at Budapest-Keleti station.

  • @marton9273
    @marton9273 Před 6 měsíci +6

    I'm very familiar with this train as I used to travel on this route (Miskolc-Budapest) frequently. There is hourly InterCity service between Miskolc and Budapest from morning to night, out of the trains serving this route 7 are served by these Hernád IC (so every 2nd hour) trains. The rest of the trains are served by Tokaj IC trains, those are generally longer and better equipped so usually I try to avoid the train in the video. The locomotive change and shunting at Miskolc-Tiszai is usually pretty quick but the train often gets delayed in both directions. Track quality until Hatvan hit the absolute bottom in the past two years or so, there have been some works during the night so it is somewhat better now but the segment immediately after Füzesabony is still very rough. The right track (towards Miskolc and Kosice) is in somewhat better condition, there are less delays in that direction. Lately they have been putting the recently leased Siemens Taurus trains on this route, with the faster acceleration they can better keep to the timetable.
    And as you have mentioned already, this is not a real EuroCity train. Out of the 3 MAV coaches only one is an actual InterCity coach and even that does not fit the requirement of an EuroCity train. To be honest it is not a big deal as there are very few passengers between Hungary and Slovakia.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Thanks for watching! I liked this route and this train. I like trains that run on non-corridor lines. I think it would be better to call it Intercity in Slovakia as well, but that's just a detail :-)

    • @janpf0624
      @janpf0624 Před 6 měsíci

      In my opinion, if the Slovak operator wanted it call EC, than the root composition of the train should be like
      ARpeer 85-70 open 1st & bistro
      BDsheer 82-70 service, children & disabked
      Beer 20-70 comparment 2nd
      Bpeer 20-70 open 2nd
      the Hungarian
      Bpee 20-44 will fit very well into the composition
      (the same license of DWA / DVJ Dunakeszi rebuilding program for all the listed coaches, made at DVJ Dunakeszi and ŽOS Vrútky),
      else it is just like Ex category.
      The main difference between the EC and IC in Slovakia is,
      the EC (Ex) are public service obligation trains, hence donated by the govt (also for free for the selected groups of citizens), while the IC trains are competitive business portfolio with deregulated fares (no freebies are allowed)😎
      Anyway, this route (from Košice / Kassa) is a typical circle - we do not travel by trains, because few services, there is enough that few trains, because noone wants to travel... You know.🙄

I would move to second class but at least in first class we have a compartment to ourselves, so far at least. The attendant said I could get a refund through the website, but I don’t have high hopes for that!

    Yo, man! What an excellent review you have here! Let me ask you a question first, which is something quite related to the video. Since you have been travelling between these three Visegrad Group nations, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, which of these nations has the best public transport system as you see? Oh yeah, the bathroom tour is literally a free disco box as the sound of the track as the train runs resembles the rhythm of some sort of disco beats 🤣 Despite the lovely nice seats they offered, the price range for me seems not so convincing. Not even a minibar is available. Did this is because of the short distance travel between these two destinations? Who knows? BTW a great analysis of the price range with the criteria as the EuroCity train provided.
    Cheers from Malaysia :)

    • @PeteBrandy

      Thanks so much for watching! I think that catering services are not offered here because it is not worth solving the logistics for this service on this route (Slovak carrier provides carriages for the entire length of the route, but a bistro car would not be worthwhile due to the lower occupancy of this line). As for the transport system, it's hard to say, there are quite a few differences in each country, in some countries there are better services / trains, but in others there is better regularity of train connections, etc. Greetings from Prague :-)

    Whoever is in charge of regulating the criteria of how a train service can be classified as Eurocity should look at this one. Took this several years ago in reverse (Budapest-Košice) in a first class compartment. The train was in the platform ahead of time, however it did not move for two hours. No apologies or explanations were officially given. Additionally, there was no onboard announcement for the entirety of the trip and I had to rely on the kindness and help of fellow passengers when it comes to information. The only upside was that I had a fruitful conversation with the other people inside my compartment while travelling.
    I loved both Budapest and Košice, but this train ride leaves much to be desired. The Bratislava-Košice IC service gives way better value at around the same price, with nice food as well.
