So, just to piggyback on what he's saying for those of you who are more curious, the effect he's describing is known in Physics as the Magnus Effect. The Magnus Effect occurrs when backspin is applied to a cylinder or spheroid, while in forward motion. Much like a wing, the backspin causes the air above the spheroid (in this case a BB) to be of low pressure, and the air below to be of high pressure, which results in lift. As one may imagine, the friction between the air and the surface of the BB, called drag, causes the BB to slow down in velocity and rotation over time, resulting in the eventual drop. So what the hopup is actually doing is turning your BB's into little bitty wings you shoot at people.
actually its more complicated than that. the way the BB generates lift is actually the opposite of how an airplane does it. an airplane wing creates a situation in which air above the wing is traveling faster than the air below. since faster-moving air applies less, orthogonal (perpendicular) force than slow-moving air, there is a force imbalance and the plane rises.
Now, backspin on a BB actually will cause the air on top to move SLOWER relative to the BB. this is because the TOP half of the BB's surface is spinning backward "with the air" for lack of a better term. Meanwhile, the bottom of the BB is spinning "into the air" again for lack of better phrasing. this means that the BB should actually fall faster... but it doesn't, as we all know. I don't remember the specific physical principle that causes this but i know its VERY complicated math (i am a 4th year engineering student). what i do know is its the same thing that affects a curveball in baseball.
@@GhostsnypePS3 the proces of magnus effect is more as joe diskribed it that back spin make low presure on top by moving air faster and on bottom spining in to the air it is slowing down air and create high pressure.
I do know that the force that pulls a spinning bullet up and toward the direction of rotation of the projectile is called the magnus force or effect. Certainly similar but I'm not sure it's identical but I think it's great you've even heard of the magnus effect. Another pet peeve of mine is when people try telling me that 5.56mm/.223 rounds actually rise then fall. And I say no it's that the barrel is pointing upwards and your point of aim will match up at your near zero then again with far zero. It's called a parabolic and that's why the bullets "appear" to rise on their own. End rant 😆.
@@GhostsnypePS3 yes that is the primary cause of lift for airplanes but the air pressure effect also generates lift for the plane as well.

very helpful. I'm just starting airsoft and this was extremely helpful.
Yo you ride?
Is there anyone who can tell me if its possible to change a rifle from 1 joule to maybe 2 or 3 joules... so I can break glass bottles... I have intruders... I dont need a real gun... but I would love a strong airsoft gun...??
Same!!
same
@@modo7911 it's been 11 months since your comment and you had intruders while making the comment, hence the "I have intruders" its probably to late now. They either had there way with you or you figured it out in the nick of time. Hopefully the later.
Extremely detailed and highly technical, which is precisely what I like. Love it. "Good onya, boy!"
Thank you sir :)
@old man strength Could be an interesting subject, although then I'd have to explain how to r-hop lol
This isn't a weird method at all my guy. This is exactly what hands on learning looks like in private schools. Kudos to you for taking the time to lay things out for people. I know many people appreciate videos like this. People like you are exactly what makes the airsoft community so great. :)
Absolutely capitol explanation. I am an actual firearms retailer just getting into airsoft for training because of skyrocketing ammo prices. And as an engineering school drop out I’ve been researching how these things work and which are best and hop ups were one of those things that everyone mentions in videos and completely skim over in terms of an explanation. This was a brilliant explanation and now I fully understand. Thank you for making the vid.
So fiddling with the hop up ISN'T black magic....who knew.
aNjaSqurl Black magic? Maybe not. Maybe juuust magic.
If magic was a science it wouldn’t be called magic.
Any sufficiently advanced technology will look like magic.
@@dmpyron2 little man inside flat light box. Must be magic. (Video on phone)
dmpyron2 that’s because you can’t define magic. True theory of magic points to magic not directly existent in our physical realm, you know, kind like 99% of things around us.
Magic is dark matter than negative energy.
Ive been trying to get into AirSoft, and I have been lost till I saw a few of your videos. Please make more. You haven't in 3 months.
That'a fair point.. What would you like to see covered?
w4stedspace honestly. You covered a lot. I would like to see a buying guide for a good beginner loadout. With so many guns to chose from it is really confusing to know which rifle to pick. I would like to see you opinion on which brand and which variation of rifle maybe is good for a starter. Maybe using price points. 1-200$ range, 200-300$ range.
What's the difference between certain ones, what to look for in a good rifle, the up and downs of certain types. This would be so helpful.
Also I love the detail in which you go into things. This is why I chose to ask you to make the video. I am so lost on where to start. I add a gun to my cart the. I am like well, is this the right one? Will I be happy, I should wait. I think that's what stops a lot of people from getting into the sport. It seems over whelming at time.
Also another point you could cover , should someone try to get a better gun that is second hand? Or get not as nice of a gun but brand new? I see lots of rifles for sale on my local ad apps. This also has me lost.
Thanks in advance.
I definetly agree i don't want spend too much money, but i don't want junk.
Well this ties in pretty well with a series I wanted to do.. guess I'll have to kick that off :) Kinda what you guys are suggesting except my plan is to actually buy the guns I recommend, play with them, talk about what works, what goes wrong.. how to fix it, how to upgrade later etc :)
Thank you! This was a great explanation! This really helped me out as someone who is just now getting back into airsoft and doesn’t have a clue!
Been into airsofting for year but only ever learned so little. This video convinced me to go get a new barrel, hop up, n bucking. Results were phenominal thank you!
Nice, glad to help :) Those 3 combined are where 90% of 'performance' comes from, so you made a good choice!
These videos were great. Really helped me gain an actual understanding of how AEGs work. I never understood the individual parts and upgrades but now that i've seen how the parts work in the gun it makes a lot of sense. Thanks!
I hit the like button just for how you wrote hop up at the beginning! Seriously, this was super helpful! Thanks man!
Watched all your Airsoft vids so far, I've not even played one game yet and am looking at getting into it, your vids are brilliant and I feel like I've learnt so much already, keep up the good work, I've subscribed and look forward to future vids 👍
Great video. I just started airsoft and my friends have been going on and on about how their hop up is ruined. Now I know what they're talking about.
'A relatively quick look at the basics' = 11.5 minute video going into the detailed workings of a component.
"Relatively"
With me, that's quick! :P
I thought it was simple and well laid out, I never knew, now I do
God people are just so impatient now days. Imagine not understanding something and bitching over a 11 minute basic explanation.
@@Fo4assaultriflefan92 its a joke
I really enjoy your few airsoft videos, perhaps the best airsoft airsoft guides/tutorials I've seen on CZcams. I (and others) would really like it if you would make more. Even for players like me (Not brand new to Airsoft) your videos are informational and helpful. Keep up the great work!
Thanks sir! Feedback like that really makes me wanna break out the tools and record something new :)
Great explanation!
I never got how this actually worked, untill now. Thanks!
Thank you for describing something so well. I'm personally not a major fan of airsoft, (i just didnt enjoy it personally) But i do love and enjoy my firearms, Ar-15 carbine and a Remington 870. I always wanted to know how airsoft guns worked and when i found out you had made a series on it i had to go check it out. I loved the way you illustrated it and made it simple to understand. Good job.
Perfect BRO! Quick sweet to the point and the additional info is spot on
I love how much he tries to give the best explanation an visualization of the concept. Feel very genuine. Go forth this way, Mr. W.
Wanna give good info man and that means making sure people can understand what I mean too! Hopefully it worked :) Took a while to figure out how I was gonna do it and then longer to figure out how to record the damn thing heh
***** And we really feel that you tried your best, and we thank you for that =)
Also, the idea was good since even a blockhead like me understood what you explained.
Your are literally the best at explaining stuff and have solid content. Subscribed. Your drawings were spot on as well haha.
Your guides are very informative. I hope to see more of these content.
Great information. I am just getting into these videos & I find them very interesting.
great video , simple and well explain , thank you for taking the time to make the video for us the new people into airsoft
well i knew a lot of how the BB is supposed to fly but how the hop up actually functions this has been very informative, thanks!
My son and I just ordered our first guns for backyard fun, but are thinking about trying out the sport. I play paintball, so if anything, this would be great in the colder half of the year when I don,t play. These are some great videos.
Really well described! I’ve played for a long time and just knew how to adjust one but not what it was doing to the bb. Makes sense!
A very clear and well explaianed lesson on hop-uos looking forward to tomorrows airsoft game.
really good to understand the hop up system, thanks
Really useful and good demonstration thanks mate
The way the BB's spin and fly is actually called the "Magnus Effect"... Veritasium actually has a great video explaining the Magnus Effect... If you don't want to search, just add this, watch?v=2OSrvzNW9FE, to the end of the .com/ in your browser...
Your correct on the proper flight path however even in a stock AEG, with it tuned properly you should be able to easily reach out close to 200ft...
20-60ft = 0% hop
60-100ft = 5-20% hop
100-300ft = 20-100% hopThis variance allows for different builds... Poor quality or stock builds will be on the lower end and higher quality builds will be on the higher end, and extremely high performance HPA and Bolt actions being able to reach 300-350ft.
Also keep in mind BB weights. While a 0.12g bb will fly faster, its far from accurate at range and wont fly as far do to its light weight, where as a 0.30g bb will fly slower but fly farther and more accurately...
Seriously this is a good video. The explanation w4sted space gives is incorrect.
Very interesting. Drawings so simple made it so clear cheers.
I know nothing about airsoft and saw on videos people talking about hop ups and wanted to know what it was. I looked at a few videos before your and they made no sense to me at all. Thanks for your vid , now I know what Hop Ups do and how they do it. Thanks.
Great explanation, thank you! Looking forward to all your future videos
Great video as I know nothing about this until now!
Loving the teaching videos, keep it up!
Great stuff, I'd love some more of this.
Try mackila.com/airsoft/atp/ . There are graphs, physics AND values were validated in real life conditions.

Very interesting read, thanks
I have been playing for at least a year but for some reason I live watching these types of videos
I love the Magnus Affect and how its applied to shooting sports.
thank you. im just getting interested in airsoft and your vids are very helpful. enough that i think you should make a playlist for them. i went through all your other vids to pick out the ones i wanted to watch but others may not
best explain of hop up mechanics on the internet there is. Thanks very much!
Absolutely well explained. Great vid.
This helped big time. Wanting to get into airsoft so I'm trying to learn all I can. Great videos
Nice illustration I didn’t really understand how the hop up practically worked but it’s very clear by your drawing and explanation thx!
@w4stedspace thanks for your guides on airsoft. I’m trying to get into it and these vids really simplify things (like hop-up adjustment) that seems scary to mess with. One video I’d really like to see you make is about batteries. I highly doubt all batteries are the same, but finding the right ones, plus compatible chargers for them, THAT would be super helpful too. Thanks for the guides! Keep it up!👍🏽
That's a great suggestion man, batteries are a bit of a dark art when looked at from the outside so sure there's plenty to talk about there, especially once you include chargers and lipo's etc into the mix. I'll see what I can do :)
Thank you so much for your informative video. I'm only just getting started with the sport and I can't wait to learn more:)
Thanks. Helped me understand what actually controls hop up
Outstanding video. Thanks for posting. 👍👍
Very good vid. Good explanation, good quality, great for beginners. Props m8 you earned yourself a sub
Great video - physics simplified and explained very well 👍🏼
Liked, subscribed and commented 👌🏻
I didn’t know what hop up was 10 mins ago.. now I know everything about it because of your video ha. Excellent video cheers
I'm new to airsoft guns and trying to get all the information I can. Your videos are the best all around videos I've found keep up the great work!!!!
enjoyed the video man! always wondered about the hop ups. thanks for this information!!! cheers!!!
Very helpful! Thanks.
Perfectly explained thank you very much
Great video and extremely helpful. Thank you.
Just getting into airsoft. This was a very useful and helpful video. Thanks for making it. Cheers from Canada.
Detailed and easy for a simple guy like me. Much appreciated.
thanks alot for all the content! it's very helpfull for me. can't wait till gear video!
Great Video i been looking for a video like this because i just bought a gun and needed to know what and how to make it more accurate THANKS.
This video is great, really helped me understand Hop Up!
Amazing video brother. Very well explained thank you for sharing.
What is an M4 like yours worth?
We can’t get them here in Australia but I’d have one If I could.
Great explanation, thanks!
Just a minor issue with the physics of the BBs in the beginning of the video. The BBs actually begin falling right after they leave the barrel. No matter how fast (or how much energy) the BB is moving, it still falls at the same rate (9.8m/s2) due to gravity.
Antoni Ip it's the backspin that's keeping the bb straight, not the speed
Thanks for the info ... I'm really thinking about getting into the sport and trying to find out as much as I can
Very detailed, thanks for this.
Awesome explanation!
Thanks for explaining that. I've just ordered my first Airsoft gun & was wondering anout hop up :)
You explained it in a way I could understand thank you
Great video, I'm just starting airsoft looking to grab a kings arm P90 for my first gun I love the P90.
Super helpful thanks so much!!
I've been around airsoftguns my whole life, but I never actually knew how hop up works, except that it "spins" the bb somehow altering it's path. Thanks, I wouldn't have thought it's such a simple mechanism.
Nicely explained sir, well done. 👍🏻
really enjoying your videos , very clear and easy to understand , thanks, as about to attempt a hop up rubber change on my r85a2, and am new to this sport (1 month) wish me luck lol
This is a great video explanation. Drawings Where perfect.
Fantastic! Thanks for this! More please.
Thanks man, well done
Awesome explanation! 👍
This was very very helpful
You're explanation and video was really good. Drawing stuff made a big difference.
Make more air soft videos ! Your great at explaining things! Watched your space engineering vids too, loads of fun !!
Thank you for the info I didn’t realize hop up was actually that important now I understand what it is.
Great video!really helped me understand.
As a beginner airsofter this was an amazing video and explanation.
Thanks man helped a lot
Cheers! Good info for a newbie like myself.
A good pair of informative videos W4sted! I'd have appreciated simple but well structured advice like this when I first got into airsoft. All I'd recommend (from a youtube perspective) is a little boost to your vocal levels - I had to turn up the volume to hear you, then got deafened at the end by your outro music!
lol, sorry :) Will be fixing that for next time! Use a different mic and recording setup for these vids so still getting used to them!
Extremely helpful, thank you.
great explanation!
this is greatm really helpful.
ive not known what people meant by hopup before so didnt really tamper with it. This now gives mea better idea of what it does.
im getting my own rifle this week. going to give it a test drive down at my local range and fiddle around with the hop up a bit to see how it affects the shots!
Very informative. Thank you 👍
Great video, very informative!
I knew wat a hop up does but now I understand how :)
This was so helpful
Hope you make more videos like this one, about airsoft I’m going to a 3 days event next year in New Zealand because I leave in Australia I’m learning so much just by changing your videos
As you command sir! (aka, nice timing.. had one planned for release today) :)
Good information well explained
was very clear. and i got the theory by only watching once. thanks
very clear for me
thanks!
Very helpful, thank you...
amazing video mate
Really useful vid, thank you!!
Great explination!!! Thank you sir.
