  • How safe is your eye protection really? We know it's important to keep our eyes protected but what happens when we put a range of options to the test, and can we make a recommendation about what is and isn't safe? Destruction included...

    Realistic vs unrealistic scenario shouldn't matter. Accidents happen. Point and case, my friend ran out of a corner a week ago and took friendly fire from an LMG that was firing across of the corner. Point blank in the face from 3ft. He just walked in front of it by accident. You can't replace your eyes, you can't control accidents, you can't control what other people do and what BBs other people use. Don't be a fool, use ANSI rated full seal eyepro.

    • @ehouse2326
      @ehouse2326 Před 6 lety +53

      lowalkoroc Can vouch, was shot in face. LMG gunner hadn’t heard the “friendly coming in” calls like we thought he had and ripped a burst right as I turned the corner. A couple BBs bounced off my full seal eye protection, and another 3 or 4 chewed up my face just below it. I shudder to think what might have been if I’d skimped on eye protection, and I don’t think I’ll play without some kind of face (or at the least, teeth) protection again.

      Well, when you are hiding and peaking out, what is the only thing that the enemy can see? Your head! They will shoot it. I'd say 1 BB out of 10 that hit me is in the face. Good eye and face protection is more important than your gun. Also, goggles that don't fog is also a thing to look for, foggy goggles can ruin a day.

    Cheaper/crappier bb's can shatter even in lower speeds. You start to think about your eye pro choice after you spit bb peaces when kid opened full auto to your lower face mesh. I have eyeglasses so i'm bit safer, but still i would not recommend mesh for eye protection, lower face sure and even there braided mesh every time!
    For those who have eye glasses ESS land ops fit least with my glasses, are tested up to 180m/s and those are pretty old model so those are bit cheaper today. Do fog a bit, but removing top and below foam and using anti fog liquid makes problem go away even for heavy sweater like my self. Price is roughly 80$ where back in the day those were close to 120$ and you can find ones used, though do inspect and test them before use (least look for indentation from sniper point blank shot). Always test eye pro with most powerful gun allowed at the field and point blank range.

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  Před 6 lety +8

      Good advice here, and the thing I should have mentioned as an alternative. I wear glasses myself but can thankfully deal with using contact lenses, for those who can't I've only heard good things about the ESS Lands Ops mentioned and they support most glasses and are fairly cheap for goggles that are properly compatible with specs. Good contribution man :)

      ESS are great stuff! I got some ESS Profile NVG as well as Wiley X Spear. The last place I'm going to save money is when my eyesight is concerned.
      It's likely possible to fix fogging issues with the Land Ops by using thermolenses, they're available for Profile NVG so likely for Land Ops as well.

      Hey! Sorry for replying here to get your attention but I was wondering if you could tell us the power of the sniper used in the video? For someone not in the UK I don't know what the limits are.
      Where I play (Denmark) the typical limit is 3.5J for snipers with MED 30 meters, so that's 615 fps / 187 m/s with 0.20g. Anything below 1.69J is zero MED.

    • @w4stedspace

      Don't go full bore and buy a full military style setup at the start because if you find out it's not for you you've just wasted a ton of money. All you'll really need for your first game is a gun that you can rent from the site, some good eye protection, sturdy boots ideally with ankle protection and preferably some sort of mouth protection and a helmet. If you find that you do like it that's when you can start looking at purchasing a plate carrier, camo uniform and your own guns.

    Wish something like this was available when I started airsoft. Would have saved me some cash long term.
    I'd also add with eye protection it's worth testing the frames. I've seen glasses style protectors where the bridge snapped when they were hit.

    • @Hellsong89
      @Hellsong89 Před 6 lety +4

      Usually older players check new players gear by glance and if something is not right (like cheap looking eye pro, that is not from trusted manufacturer like Bolle or ESS) they tell them to go test it. Game masters then take top velocity gun (170m/s sniper) and point blank test shoot it in the lens and if frame is questionable, again to that. Test is optional, but you are playing if eye pro witch is not tested. Bolle and ESS eye pro models has been tested so many times that its pretty redundant already.
      Our field demands head band for all glasses style protectors, so those wont fly off if you fall etc. Bridge snapping is excellent point though, but i really dont see benefit on using such eye pro anyways, unless you have masochistic tendencies towards fast moving bb's.

    Very well made and quite interesting.
    I may not have any plans of ever trying out airsoft, but it is interesting to see these toys being put to the test in various ways. Still looking forward to the comparison of the two guns you bought, if you manage to get some useful footage from that in the end; the teasers looked promising.
    I may have wished for a few non-edge case shots at the different gear just to see what kind of inertia dropoff there is, but it isn't very important since the protective gear is there to save your eyes when things go wrong.
    The main reason I really wanted some shots from different distances was to see how much of an edge case it is to be shot from 20 cm away -- how much farther away do you need to be to make the bad gear at least non-awful/not break? The idea is not to legitimise the bad gear but to give an idea of _how_ bad it is in stead of only having a binary good/bad stamp.
    As always, keep up the good work.

    I noticed you had a mesh lower face protector laying about with a dent or two in it (coincidentally it's on the 'not safe' side). Do you have anything to say about the mesh face protector; or is it more or less the same story as the mesh goggles? I'm interested because I personally own an identical protector, but wear a rather thick scarf/bandanna under it for the sake of shrapnel protection. Great video as always, thanks! =)

      We did test that quickly also yeah, but decided it warrented it's own video where we look at things like shemaghs etc. We did manage to break it with the sniper yes, think it was 3 shots again even though the mesh is much thicker, think it's a weaker metal overall. More info to come soon :)

      Mesh is not essential, in fact many UK airsoft sites do not require it on site. Only eye protection is needed at all sites. It allows breathability and sound to pass through, and doesn't cover your whole face which is ideal. Some airsoft sites do require face protection but this form qualifies for it.

    Hey W4sted, what goggles are good to use with glasses?

    • @Texfire
      @Texfire Před 6 lety +2

      I've struggled with finding a good pair of shooting glasses to wear over prescription lenses for years. There aren't many options out there, and wearing a second pair of goggles or glasses over glasses isn't very comfortable for extended wear.
      Currently for work applications I use the ESS Crossbow, I previously used the ICE, which can be purchased with a RX lens insert option for ANSI rated goggles at work. It's not cheap after you add in the price of lenses, but you only have two eyes and one pair will last you a long time as the exterior lenses can be replaced cheaply. I recommend them for good protection and comfort. They also have full goggles if you want even more side protection, but the ICE and Crossbow both offer adequate side protection in my opinion without being as prone to fogging.

    Thanks for the safety advice. This is a very good demonstration for airsoft players, new and old alike.
    As many pointed out, extreme cases do happen. I had one quite some years ago. I had the Bolle X500 goggles, which were perfect for wearing glasses underneath. One trade off is that there is a opening for the arm of your glasses. It does not completely seal to your face.
    Granted, you have the goggle band going over that opening, so there is only a really small angle from which BB can enter directly.
    I was shot at from the side, and one BB managed to enter into my goggle. I wasn't hurt, but it is extremely scary to see and hear a BB bounce inside your goggle when you are getting shot, and my scream ended the game with people coming over.
    That lucky (or unlucky) shot probably hit the band, bounced inside my helmet and ricochet into the opening. It lost most of its energy, so it didn't hurt my eyes.
    That is a one-in-a-billion shot, and I am now much more picky with what goggles I use

    • @w4stedspace
      @w4stedspace  Před rokem

      Yeah, if you play long enough eventually you will see one of these edge cases happen, and when you do it teaches a good lesson. Hopefully people will take the advice in advance rather than having to experience it firsthand!

The only thing that would kind of flaw this test, is that both the pistol and the rifle are fired at point-blank range whereas if it was a battlefield situation they would be much greater distances and the BB's would lose energy and slow down, therefore resulting in less force on impact

    • @PsychEngel
      @PsychEngel Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, that's nothing bad, but can lead into, that people jump trough the video, lost some important things or break the video up, because it's too much. Maybe do first a little explain, then make the test with a small of information and in the end, you can easily do a comparison, after that, you're free to give so much information, like you like and it's fine. The people have the important things and if they like more, they stay, if not, they go, but you reached your goal and haven't to cut your way to make your videos. Just my two cents which reached my head right now :)
