Hi Dustin! Long-time viewer. First time commenter. 42 years as a collector. You touched on it briefly at the very end, but perhaps the most important question to ask at this point is, “What is my true motivation for owning the card I want?” Greatest potential rate of return when it’s inevitably sold? Pride in ownership for individual enjoyment? Does it fit my collecting theme (if there is one), set, or subset? A piece to show off to other hobbyists? Would I still enjoy having the card if it had no value? Is this a temporary or long-term hold? Those questions have guided my buying over the years. Lastly, I’ve enjoyed the channel for years and appreciate the time you’ve put into creating hobby content!
Thanks for watching and commenting Ty! You’re definitely right, so many internal questions we have to answer, but I guess that’s part of the fun
I won't buy another ultra modern card unless I buy it raw and grade it. Everything has gone down. What's the floor? Who knows!
I'd take the 51 Bowman Mantle over the 52 Topps Mantle. His true rookie card and looks more like him.
Jokic, FTW! (Except his defense could be better.) 😁
I’m exactly in your thought process!
That 1965 Topps Joe Namath is actually an "SP" (Short Print). There really WEREN'T too many of them printed in 1965.
Just consolidated to get a very similar budget but my goal was a mid grade 1950 Bowman Jackie (registration and centering are tough on that card). I found a great example and it’s now in the PC
Awesome!
The prices have come down enough that I am picking up stuff that was on my radar back in 2019, too. Finally just added an 04 SPA Larry Fitz. Should have done it a LONG time ago. Better late than never and definitely better than what they were going for 3 years ago.
I paid $300 for a box of 2017 Prizm when it first came out, and I pulled a Mahomes rookie card and his Instant Impact Prizm. I GAVE the rookie card to my neighbor because he is a die-hard Chiefs fan. Mahomes has come a long way from being booed when he was drafted!!!
I’ve collected vinyl records since 2012. I had a great card collection in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Always buying cheap cards here and there. For probably a year I’ve bought no records and all cards. I’ve now got to sell all this including equipment. Some has to go to savings but I wouldn’t mind all the rest going towards a ‘51 Mantle in a one grade. I would be a happy man. By the way I’m the guy who doesn’t live that far from you😀
Don’t feel bad. I had Mahomes Rookie Camo Auto Prizm /25 PSA 10 in my eBay cart in 2017 but didn’t pull the trigger due to buying a few Ohtani mega box Rookies. Mahomes card was going for 2500 it sold for 80k at peak of the boom… 😂😢
Luka is one of my favorite NBA players to watch. But it bothers me that he’s on a bubble playoff team every year. This is what seperates the elite players from the great players. Jokic, Giannis, Tatum always have their teams in the top seeds for the conference and usually make a deep playoff run. Luka has had one 50 win season and one trip to the conference final. I guess I was expecting more with him and Kyrie but right now they are a play-in team. Luka and Embiid need to show me more in the playoffs before I would invest in them.
I like Luka more than I used to and yet, its hard to argue with that. If there is one guy I'm not betting against right now its Jokic. He just keeps on getting better.
Fun video cuz we can all relate with the internal struggle on which is truly the best option with limited resources. I will always vote for vintage when we’re talking larger amounts of money cuz you never know if modern player might sabotage their career with something in their personal life etc…
Who does the paintings behind you? (I’m sure you have answered this question a ton)
My mother in law is a painter and made them for me
@@TheSportsCardDadsuper cool.
Great video, all cards that are near n dear to me so I relate to the thought process.
I lean to the Luka, but only because I got my Mantle Rc checked off my list.
The Mantle feels like your holding a piece of American History when you actually own it, so it feels a little bigger than even larger key important modern cards.
Well said!
That Broadway has been on my list too long.
Another day , another great video
If you own a '51 Mantle RC... you have an outstanding collection! (imo)
Another good video you’re getting better 😅
Which sport were the Revolution cards that you bought?
Basketball
Great video! That Joe Namath would be a huge card for me as well
Thank you!
If I buy Modern, I want to buy something that is more rare (Under 200 copies, preferably 100 copies or less). With vintage, I love it, but I sometimes wonder if there are too many copies of some vintage cards, which causes me to want to buy higher grade vintage cards, which cost a lot more. So I too am conflicted.
Make no mistake about it: theres millions of cards printed. Grading companies rely heavily on artificial scarcity. If you want truly rare collectibles, you have to think outside the box.
The bad thing about any modern short-prints is the fact that there's often more printed than what's believed, and the card manufacturers can keep printing that same card at any given time.
@@vintagecollector5340 What are your thoughts on 1950's and 1960's baseball cards? I am doing an even Mantle run, the entire Monte Irvin run, have a 1961 Clemente and trying to add a Jackie, Mays, and Aaron to my collection, but wondering if it might be better to look for autograph copies of these cards are they are probably more rare than a high grade in the cards I listed above. What are your thoughts on this?
@@kerryrauschendorfer4491 Honestly, I dont collect many sports cards anymore, but if I were, I would probably chase rarer items like the 1958 Mays Root Beer test card, the 1964 Meadow Gold Mays sports card, or even test proof cards not meant for public consumption. If you're after rare items, that's what I personally would chase. Autographs are not rare, unless a player didn't sign much. Most players signed a ton, so their autographs aren't rare. If you want really rare items outside of sports cards, look into original photographs or game tickets. I'll even go out on a limb and say that some newspapers might be worth looking into. How many of those were saved over the years? I'd say not many. I acquired a 1951 newspaper where Mays made his debut and also where he made his first hit as a homerun.
@@kerryrauschendorfer4491 But you collect what you enjoy collecting. For me, that's mostly rare and original sports photographs. There's nothing wrong with putting together a run of Mantle cards or any other player, though. It sounds like you are grasping for true scarcity, though, so if I'm in your shoes and truly want scarcity, Im looking at rare game tickets or photos. I once collected a ton of cards, but I got tired of discrepancies over grading and condition of cards, so I sold them all off and converted over into original photos. Many photos I've purchased, I've never seen on the market again.
Hi Dad. If u r looking for an investment the mantle is the way to go. That will probably keep going up. It has for 50 yrs. Mahomes and luka could get injured at any time. Thanks have a great weekend.
Joe Namath was the first player ever to throw for 4000 yards in a season
Lindsay normally you leave a mean comment. What happened today?! lol happy friday
@@TheSportsCardDad new year, new attitude. BTW, not all Mahomes 2017 Prizm PSA 10s are the same. That card has a notorious surface issue that sometimes still gets a 10.
@@lindsaywhited2740 Oh yeah I know all about it, the printing 'dimple' on the right shoulder. Good call out
I hope you pay Frank well.. he does a great job too… great team 😅👍🏼
;)
Are there cards you collect raw with idea of trying to grade yourself down line?
Oh yeah, I grade. 80 cards out for grading now
Good problem to have.
The most I ever spent on 1 card was $500. And was only because I sold a bunch of garbage pail kids that I had hardly anything in. The card I bought was raw and /10 and was the last card I needed for a rainbow. There's another copy for sale PSA 10 pop 1 for $250. Maybe I should have waited. Just another reminder to wait for a better price later on.
Garbage pail kids rule!
Great vid
Thanks!
My Knicks hell yeah.
It's a gamble.
Enjoyed the video
Thanks!
You're a dead on man.
What's the obsession of collecting cards of guys you've never actually seen play? How about sticking to cards from the 80/90s aka heroes from YOUR childhood?
What’s up SCD
What’s up? Who dat?!?
Can’t pay 10x NOW for Mahomes. That card won’t be 40k in the future. Train is gone. If you want to just own the card, grab the PSA 8. It presents well and you own it.
Excellent job man, I'm with you 98% unfortunately I can't necessarily agree about knowing what the count is IE the /199.
With all the things that have taken place in the last I'm not sure how many years exactly I just can't have that kind of confidence not anymore.
But I respect where you're coming from.
Just ask a psycho……
❤ it
goodluck
Your dad on
Hit me up if you are looking for any Joker cards. I've been saying it to you for years now... ( Since the days of Brad) I have a massive collection of Joker Rookie PSA 10s. -Judson
YES! you are my Jokic expert for sure if I go to buy one
I'd stay far away from modern cards.
Correction. I'm the best Bball player on the earth. Jokic is a close second.
Daisy can dribble better than you Steve
Buy Luka for long term investment
If you are a long-term hold for slow growth, the Mantle...if you are a 5 to 10 year hold it's got to be an active young player.
Sorry , you are dead on.
Forget your kids mortgage your house buy the psa 10 1 of 1 gold now now man now
vintage all the way for me :-)
This is why I keep buying Jalen Brunson rookies. He’s like 1/10th the price of Luka and is probably more likely to win a championship first. I bought the true blue for like $100 a while back and it’s only continued to go up and up
I dont see Luka Doncic playing in the NBA for that long alot of yall are gonna get left holding a Empty Bag from what my sources are saying he wasnt out of this Shitty place called America 🤷🏻♂️ just keeping it 💯 so keep that scenario in the back of that 🧠
