    Ever thought about using Medium Format glass for filming?
    "Interstellar" and "The Dark Knight Rises" do so on IMAX cameras.
    Mamiya 645 lenses are surprisingly affordable and future proof in a market trending toward larger sensors... and they look absolutely gorgeous. A real alternative for modern Mirrorless Full Frame hybrids, for Large Format cine cams like the Arri Alexa 65 and Alexa LF, the RED Monstro, Sony Venice and the MAVO LF... but also for any other sensor size including Micro Four Thirds.
    We are having an extensive look on the primes of Mamiya 645 Sekor C range using the Panasonic GH5 and EVA1, as well as the 35mm Full Frame sensor MAVO LF introducing a Kipon Focal Reducer that enables us to use the whole image of Medium Format lenses... giving you crazy shallow Depth Of Field and mind boggling amounts of light.
    We are testing: Sharpness, field of view, focus breathing, Bokeh, flaring, close focus, throughout the range on different sensor sizes with and without Speed Boosters.
    We also give practical tips including cine-modding, service and repairs.

    Since first seeing this video I have been slowly building my Mamiya 645 lens set. After extensive testing I can only say these lenses are a phenomenal value and have their own distinct look. Most noticeable is their excellent and accurate - to the point of stunning - capture of the color and subtleties in skin tones.
    I also love their protection of shadows; while they are good with contrast these lenses are not harshly contrasty and as a result shadows are most often rendered with great subtlety and don’t go jet black. In short they shoot like they have a kind of black pro mist built in. As noted in this video.
    Aa far as sharpness is concerned these lenses are razor sharp and provide satisfying subject-to-background separation.
    Bonuses include how incredibly well built they are and as far as the primes are concerned are quite lightweight (the 105-210 is built like a tank and therefore HEAVY but is wonderfully well mannered, sharp and handles like a 35mm format zoom lens)
    I originally purchased one as a low cost “sandbox” test just to see. It took me a while to get my head around just how good the lens is. Note: I also shoot with Hasselblad (Zeiss editions) and Leica R series lenses. These lenses are impeccable and each has it’s own distinct look and live up to their stellar reputations. My point in mentioning them is that I believe the MAMIYA 645 lenses can be credibly placed into this category of optics with only a few small but notable disadvantages when compared to them: 1) there is a degree of chromatic aberration that the other two lenses pretty much eliminate; especially the Leica glass. Personally, I find that it takes pixel peeping to even find it and for its other advantages and low cost I would hardly consider it a sacrifice. 2) the general lightness in weight of the lenses tends to make me think that the build quality may be sub par but based on the age of these lenses and their still excellent functioning I think it’s just my imagination.
    Beginners: you can afford these lenses and you get to win twice: 1) super low cost for entry (as of right now but some versions are getting more expensive) 2) even after you build your book you can still shoot with these lenses IF they possess the look you are after for a given shoot. In short you will have made a valuable long term invest in your work and your career.
    Oh....and if your have not entered the world of adapted lenses, I promise you you have NOTHING to worry about with these lenses; I shoot on a full frame DSLR and do not get any vignetting.
    I am just as excited now about these lenses - even amidst my arsenal of other quality glass - as I was when I first began acquiring them.
    Have some fun!
    Get Out There.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 4 lety

      If you would want to use the whole lens projection you would need a much stronger focal reducer. O.4x or something like that.. I don’t know of any reducer like that. with the Kipon you loose a bit FOV but most projector lenses need crops anyways

    I’ve tracked down a whole set of Mamiya three years ago. They are all same year, same series. Almost all of them from the same photographer in Japan. I love the image they have. I’ve added the focus gear and 80mm filter thread on the whole set. I’m still having second thoughts to have their mounts replace by PL. (expensive at Duclos)
    Honestly I miss wide angles and I’m happy that you talked about ARRI and RED mounts which are the Cameras I usually shoot them with. Sony Venice too lately.
    This optics are fantastic. Thanks again for this great video.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 lety

      Hey Pedro, thanks a lot for the flowers, trying and improving all the time. I wouldn't replace the mount to PL, it just takes away their future compatibility with larger formats...LPL to start with, and I don't expect it to end there. 65mm seems to be a logical extension. Also, it would take away the ability to use focal reducers that will indeed give you somewhat wide FOV with the 35mm giving a 24,5 equivalent.

    You said 2001 Space Odessy and Lawrence of Arabia were shot on large sensors. For the benefit of the kids watching this, please, ... !!!
    those films were shot medium format FILM !!!
    (65mm Todd AO, to be precise, then printed on DP 70mm with stereo sound track)

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 lety +3

      yeah... I noticed that to late.... but I can talk myself out of it... negatives are sensors, just analog ;-) Anyhow... I think one gets the gist. Well spotted.
      But if we want to be precise here: There is no medium format in film… 65/70mm is defined as "large format" in cinematography (I mention that in the video. Also, according to "Shot on What" 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia are credited as Super Panavision 70 that is not identical to Todd AO. IMDB lists 2001 as Cinerama, Super Panavision and Todd AO.

    • @parratt-world
      @parratt-world Před 5 lety

      @@MediaDivision Yes of course, I know what you mean, that film is a form of 'sensor', and most watching your video ( which I found very informative thank you) will understand this, and well, it's water under the bridge now.
      But it's interesting if IMDB lists 2001 with any amount of Cinerama, because this is the 3-camera/3-projector set up, and I don't think there is a single frame of Cinerama in that film.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  Před 5 lety

      Yeah, sound strange to me, too. Of course, 2001 used no 3 camera system… but without doing extensive research I know that some cinerama shot where done with ultra Panavision for practical reasons (I think there is a river rafting scene where they did that)… maybe there is a camera that was branded as cinerama from that, that has been also used for 2001… or, it is simply bogus ;-)

    Does anyone know of any options for Mamiya 645 or Pentax 6x7 lenses to EF mount as a focal reducer/speedbooster?

      @@MediaDivision Thanks! Good to know. I mentioned it because I'm a firm believer that every lens has it's own look, and I must admit I'm partial to vintage lenses. I have a 50mm f1.4 FD and I love it, although it tends to be somewhat soft wide open. The 80mm you showed seems to have beautiful rendition of color and texture, and in my eyes looks plenty sharp without becoming clinical. Aesthetically, I tend to prefer more compressed look, hence the focal length; or a wide angle with shallow depth of field, which is why I'm also considering a Sigma 18-35mm with a speedbooster for the other end of the spectrum. My 25mm Hyperprime is extremely fast and versatile, but sometimes it feels a little too flat for my taste.

      @@MediaDivision Or is there a 645 to Nikon mount? I am currently using the metabones .64 to adapt my Nikon lenses. Would that combo work?

      I think that is a healthy attitude to about everything ;-)
      I ever only had my Metabones Ultra for MFT... so can't really compare that. But no complaints - works well. The .64 should work well with a Mamiya 645 to F Adapter.
      There are many... but I tested none as I don't own Nikon lenses. You'll find a link in the description of the video!

    I really appreciate this informative tutorial. I have been looking for something like this for a while. What would you recommend for the Fuji XT3 (APS-C sized sensor) to get identical results as the Mavo LF with speed booster? I am a major fan of the IMAX, Alexa LF, Vista Vista Vision & Medium Format look. Please continue the great work. I will Subscribe to your awesome channel.
