I personally thinks it’s one of the greatest covers ever.
This song falls just behind Johnny Cash - Hurt as my personal greatest cover song ever but god damn its close
This one and stairway to heaven by heart are my favorite covers.
@@jackiejackiebootysmackie Agree wholeheartedly. Heart performing in front of Page, Plant, Paul Jones is EPIC!!!
@@LordStanley94 epic is right. I get chills every time I watch the video!
@@liamjohnstone1062 disgaree totally, Cashs cover was passable at best. Reznor paying lip service to a country music wife beating heroin junkie icon was just that. Hes not gonna say what a piece of crap it was, and alienate a part of his cash paying fanbase. Johnny Cash should have quit making music when he blew up like Elvis, and was a man ball that stuttered amd stammered through songs. Not impressed -24/10 would not recommend
Disturbed didn't cover the song, they gave it a rebirth, took it and made it their own.
In 1965 Simon & Garfunkel saw how people were unable to talk to each other. In 2015 Disturbed firmly told us, it being time we started communicating.
S&G's version is an observation. Disturbed's version is a call to action, still ringing true to this day.
…that’s covering a song
I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel and never thought anyone else could do their songs justice. However, the Disturbed cover of Sounds of Silence is a terrific song. Extremely well done. I’m not surprised Paul Simon gave this version kudos.
I LOve both versions
Elvis did an outstanding version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
Paul Simon is probably the best song writer I've ever heard. I agree this cover is inspired.
I agree. Like David alluded to, I didn't like it better than the original, but I was seriously impressed with their version. Only Disturbed could do this justice.
@@one4320 In my opinion, Graceland is the most creative album produced in my lifetime. From the moment I heard my first Simon and Garfunkel song in the 70s, (Bridge Over Troubled Waters I think? ) I have been infatuated with Paul. Consummate artist.
I am 70 yo. My young bloke introduced me to these guys. If they ever come to Australia, I am going to see them, with him!
fantastic!
We'll trade you for Midnight Oil.
My mother will be 70 in January, and she had asked for tickets to their show in September as an early birthday present. If Corona virus doesn't cause the show to be postponed, she will get them.
"Your young bloke"?
Son?
Husband?

David not only has an incredible singing voice, his speaking voice is so soothing.
I know right ? I didnt expect to hear him speak with such eloquence ...and appreciation .
He has great enunciation.
Yes very soothing
You can hear his vocal training and control when he speaks.
meh, sounded pretty normal to me
I always liked the song but I have to say the one done by Disturbed is nothing short of amazing. I dont know why but it actually brings tears to my eyes.
Because it makes you feel...
My whole being reacts to their version. Chills, tears, it's amazing. Never had that strong of a reaction to a song before.
David is a very skilled, classically trained vocalist. So when he wants to put a lot of intensity and emotion into a performance, you can bet it will be there. The original is wonderful, but the power that David brought to their cover really does evoke a more visceral response.
He said in another video that when he sings it to a live audience, he looks around and sees many crying and is humbled that he has that effect on people.
S & G spoke to a warning of things that might be to come, in their time. Disturbed spoke to the failure to heed that warning. Present tense, Vs. past tense? The former was foreboding, chilling in it's implications. The latter, well let's just say that we fell down that rabbit hole...
The Simon and Garfunkel original was very fitting in my youth when it first came out. But now, the Disturbed version expresses my feelings as a much older man.
Nailed it Bro.....
Absolutely how I feel about it.
I have to agree. The young me loved the original Simon and Garfunkle (and always will), but the older me feels the Disturbed cover on a whole different level.
They took this classic song and made it their own nobody will ever touch this classic song ever again
To listen to the original it is actually creepy. It sounds like children singing a song you hear in a horror movie. The voices are angelic but the lyrics are far from it. The Disturbed version feels like someone telling how they feel? The original does not have to same vibe. But don't get me wrong I love the original. Both versions have their own merit. And it's really cool that Paul Simon had great things to say about the cover.
When I heard Disturbed was going to do this cover, I was like Oh no, what were they thinking. I thought it was a huge risk in both that it wouldn’t work, and that iconic song was a bad choice for many reasons. Then, I heard it. I’ve never been more wrong about anything in my life. That song was my childhood. It’s an amazing version.
OMFG YES! It is my favorite S & G song and my daughter was like "Mom, you gotta listen to this!" and I said The Down With The Sickness guys! SERIOUSLY!?? WTF...but the more I heard it the more I truly came to appreciate it. I have seen a comment posted on a few of Disturbed's cover the S &G's was a warning and theirs was rage that the warning was ignored. I think that comment really captures the feeling of both versions.
Wendy Novel - I saw that same comment and thought that pretty much nailed it. 😀
one of the times you dont mind being wrong about something because its a great cover
@@Darkhuntersrule i thought the same ooh wa a a a ooh ooh then that masterpiece im stunned
Me too. Youth is wasted on the young. What I would love to have back but keep my knowledge.
You deserved that praise. Your version is wonderful. Paul Simon wrote and performed it with despair at how things were declining. Disturbed sang it with anger that nothing has changed.
That's often the motif of all their covers.
Nailed it
Well said x
jesus christ stop repeating the same damn thing in a slightly different way
"Simons' version was a warning. Disturbed's version was anger that the warning was ignored"
So fucking cringe man, we get it. Stop.
Their cover of Sound of Silence is in the running for one of the greatest covers of all time as far as I am concerned.
During my life time i have heard many original songs and then the cover version. For the most part I’m not a cover fan, there have been a few that were great. This version of Sound of Silence has to be one of the greatest covers i have heard in my 50 yrs of living.
And in my 66 years!
51 here, yup he brings out the power of emotion here supremely well, check out "striken". it is my fav by disturbed

@@Cry.For.Ukraine we should start a senior citizens center.....
Absolutely fantastic I am 77 and loved Simon and garfunkel but this version is truly
Incredible just love it
David Draiman is a humble, gracious, and eloquent gentleman.
A far cry from the Disturbed stage persona.
David Draiman is The Sound of Silence in a world that will not stop shouting!
I'm just sad because my dad passed away and that he never heard disturbed cover, because I know that he would love it especially because it was one of his favorite songs when he was growing up, he was a fan of the good music and I just know that he would love it as well as I do.
Love you dad, let the angels keep you as I did.
I'm hurting because I never said good bye and I never told you that I forgive you everything, but I do forgive you and I hope that you forgive me for not being around for the last couple of years, if I could I would never allow you to die, not in that way, as I always saved you in the past many times because I cared more about you than you about you, but illness got you faster than I thought. Maybe I could change something, maybe I couldn't I'll never know and it hurts like hell.
Goodbye dad, rest in peace!
After you it's a sound of silence!
Sound of Silence was the song through which I was introduced to Simon and Garfunkel by my father as a child.
Sound of Silence was the song through which my father was introduced to Disturbed by me as a grown man.
What a gracious and articulate man David seems to be. Their version of the song is exquisite.
Their version of the song is EPIC. It's actually the best version ever made. To the point that Paul Simon was very impressed, just like most of us. Disturbed's version actually fits perfectly the lyrics and the song itself.
I've never listened to Disturbed or even their music style before, but this is undoubtedly the best cover version of any song ever. A thousand listens later it never ceases to bring chills to my spine, goosebumps to my body and tears to my eyes.
Disturbed's version is the new classic! Absolutely fab!
I don't care what ANYONE says. You guys NAILED IT!
Possibly the best cover of any song i've heard David Draiman's voice WOW WOW WOW. EPIC ;-)
Only cover that's even close is Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt.
That cover was actually my introduction to Disturbed. I had of course heard a few of their songs that got radio play, but I'm old and cranky and don't keep up much with a lot of newer music. I loved the original version and my daughter sent me a link and told me i was going to be blown away. I was skeptical, but blown away is an understatement. I have rarely been moved to tears, covered in goosebumps or had the the wind nearly taken out of me from any song in probably the last decade or longer, and NEVER by a cover of a song I love the original version of. Just Fucking Wow! I adore Paul Simon but really, it was his honor to have David Draiman intepret that song into that masterpiece. And that's what he did, he made an already beautiful song into a fucking masterpiece.
@@belladonna8425 Who cares if you're old and cranky? So am I, and I love a lot of the new metal, especially bands like Jinjer and Band Maid. It's all in what you like. You be you and you do you...let no one tell you that you are wrong.
@@belladonna8425 I totally agree. This turned a beautiful sing into an anthem.
The only other recent cover I put in this class is Uninvited by Red Sun Rising. Usually covers are just a trip down memory lane but these two to me were special.
It's not just a song... it's an experience!!!
I can't listen to the Distirbed version enough!! The pipes on their lead singer just really makes that song hit you in the gut and send chills up your spine!@
When I heard Disturbed version I got goose bumps, and nearly cried. One of the best songs I ever heard in my life! No wonder even Paul Simon liked it! Amazing version! Congratulations Disturbed!! For both the Conan version and the video version! By the way, the black and white video is also a masterpiece!!
When I heard this version, I was speechless. As a rocker from way back, I absolutely love the way Disturbed arranged this song. Awesome. Absolutely awesome.
Because YOU KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. You, have a beautiful, powerful voice. Please do more of this.
Agreed! I LOVE his voice on this song. It's a perfect vocal...mesmerizing.
For years, I only knew of the original one, and I thought it was perfect and couldn't possibly ever be topped. Then, just a week ago, I don't know I missed it for almost 7 years, I got to know of this cover, and... I honestly have to say I like it better. The original was very moving, but it still felt like a plead, to listen to the warning, with a hope that people might. The much more somber and then outright angry and explosive take of Disturbed is like it's saying that 50 years later, they're gutted and sad that nobody took the warning seriously, and then they just burst out in frustration over knowing that nothing will change, nobody will listen to the warning, society is doomed, all the warnings fell on deaf ears, and how they're disappointed in people for acting like that, and showing that they have no more hope, because there is no more hope to find anywhere. It's a beautiful song, but the 50 years after cover conveys so many more emotions, and gets so much under my skin. Nothing short of a masterpiece.
Ha, i should have read your post before i posted mine. I could have just said "Ditto"😂🤣😂
You got it.
Disturbed captured the mood of this song like no other. His voice gives this an operatic dramatic quality. I can barely watch it with crying.
It’s all thanks to David Draiman’s (the singer) father, whose a Cantor (singer that leads Synagogue in worship), and David’s training to become a Cantor - until he decided to work in the medical field and use his vocal talent to start a rock band on the side. It’s crazy, but he had a full blown career as a Hospital administrator at the time Disturbed hit it big. He was very close to almost never sharing that voice with the world. I’m so glad his side project turned into a major record deal :)
I am notbusually a fan of song remakes, but this one had me glued to my seat. I would not say they turned it to heavy metal or even metal. What they did was turn it into a query powerful rendition that is stunning both audio and visually .. completely captivated! Well done gents!!
There are only two covers of popular songs that wildly surpass the emotion of the original, and that is Disturbed's "Sound of Silence" and Johnny Cash's "Hurt".
k.d. lang's cover of Cohen's "Hallelujah" makes a 3rd
Absolutely agree.
I do love Britney Spear's version of I love Rock 'n Roll....
I think all of Simon And Garfunkel’s songs need to be converted to metal. Scarborough Fair- Queensryche.
White Lion Radar Love..... would also be in this Category
The first version was an attempt to wake the masses to a wide spread social failing. The second version seemed more like a shout of anger that nobody has seemed to make any kind of progress toward addressing that failing , and much of the same problems continue today.
Love this viewpoint! I hadn't thought of it that way but it fits perfectly!
@@fastfox23 triplebackspace didn't think of this either... someone else did. He/she stole it.
How could you NOT think of it that way? Goht damn, its what the songs a-fucking-bout!
@@taylorjrobinson3672 Even if he heard it elsewhere, deseminating the information is no more stealing than covering the song.
I appreciate what you are saying, but if the message is not constantly delivered, it is eventually forgotten
You now wonder how many other metal singers could do a cover justice like David did. This song gives me chills still to this day
I can think of at least two, one male and one female. Geoff Tate, formerly of Queensryche. Opera trained and three octaves of range. Floor Jansen, formlerly of After Forever and ReMax, currently with Nightwish could also pull it off. Floor is a natural singer, who took some vocal lessons, though the extent of which is unknown to me. But she can sing in a classical manner, pop, or metal and often does all three in the same song, now that she is in Nightwish.
Metallica's cover of Turn the Page
I kinda am a fan of Simple Man by shinedown. Like to see it live.@@shaunlagana5971
@@shaunlagana5971 I prefer the original, but that WAS a great cover.
This cover blows me away, gives me goosebumps and makes me cry. Amazing version David....your voice and stage presence are off the charts. Thank you for ressurection this amazing song. Loved the original, but Disturbed version moves me far more.
Both versions fit their time.... I grew up with S&G and loved this song. When I heard this on Conan I thought Disturbed was going to ruin it. I absolutely LOVE it... Did an excellent job...and Disturbed NAILED it for this time. Have started looking into their videos and even though I am not a metal fan, I loved their lyrics...., and have started watching their videos. David Draiman is a decent and cool guy, and his voice is absolutely amazing....!!
Decent and cool guy?! He's a God living with more mortals, and he's nice to us, has an unearthly vocal ability, and that's WAY beyond "decent"! Very cool though! LOL
And that night he had a fever of 102 from bronchitis and he still nailed it.
Paul reached out and told them he loved it and posted it on his own social media. They met for about 30 mins one New Year's.
They really blew me away--I guess it was 2 yrs ago for this 63 yr old that I heard them.
Great respect shown to the material and then brought something to the table! And just enough grit/growl.
I did not want to hear this song, as I grew up with the original version as the background music of my childhood. I was afraid it would be a massacre of the original and I couldn't bear to hear that happen. I just heard the song, and you absolutely floored me! I LOVE what it has become, and I appreciate where you took the masterful lyrics and how you energized the music. Well done.
David Himself is a humble guy, down to earth and appreciative of others and their efforts.
I've posted basically this same comment elsewhere but it is one that you need to see. I remember when sounds of silence came out and was blown away. It is one of the best pieces of music of recent years and has lyrics that actually convey a message. Loved it! But when I heard your cover I leterally cried. You brought a whole new dimension to one of my favorite songs. On key, on point, beautifully arranged, with extreme feeling, and unbelievably, on stage, not in a studio. You have improved on a near perfect piece of music. Thank you!
Every part of my life. DISTURBED has helped me thru my pain. I lost my Mother Father and brother. I The last concert I went to was with my precious brother. Draimins voice is my therapy. He's like an Archangel.
I love both versions. I have always been a. huge fan of Simon and Garfunkle since I was a child. I love rock as well. Disturbed version is so good I listened to it over and over. I still love the original but appreciate the emotions felt when I listen to disturbed version.
My son showed me the song from Conan. I have always been a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan and I wept like a baby watching your version. What an amazing, beautiful voice you have and it absolutely blew me away. Truly, truly amazing version.
I never get tired of listening to this cover. Its captivating ❤
When you listen to the Disturbed version it really makes you feel the song - I feel the emotion in the Disturbed increases the intensity of the message and makes it very relevant to todays society.
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence but Disturbed' cover is an emotional offering that brings home and expresses Paul and Art's message of people's indifference and misdirection. You can't help but listen to the lyrics as David Draiman puts his heart and soul into his performance. By far my favorite cover!💜
All these years later and I'm still getting the chills every single time I listen to Disturbs cover of this tune especially if it's the one from the Conan show!!
Decades ago I listened to a show where Paul's music was being discussed. It was around the time of his Graceland album. Some (I've forgotten) associate or friend said that one of the reasons for his success was that, even from his very first recording, he refused to record unless the recording equipment was the absolute best available. He demanded that same perfection from anyone else involved. Knowing this, hearing that Paul posted Disturbed's cover is remarkable. Of course, that cover -- IS -- phenomenal!
Disturbeds version captures the true feeling of this song, it is awesome.
darkerdemon2 it captures a feeling alright, but it’s a different feeling. I love both versions, but each one hits me in a different way.
@@bsegovia23 now that makes alot of sense. Youre right about that.
In today's environment, this song, the way he sang it, caused a very strong emotional response from me.
I agree. I think Disturbed's version fits emotions and lyrics together better than the original.
@@lydialutz especially in the times we are in now. I love the original, its just a bit folksy for what they were trying to get across.....really though, Simon and Garfunkel had great insight to even be able to write this and make it prophetic to where society was leading to....Disturbed perfected the emotional impact that it has to me.
I had goose bumps the first few times hearing their version, very powerful voice.
The original version was classic and so good. But Disturbed version or cover was so powerful and heartfelt. It really came through the musuc. What an Honor.
Not many bands get such resoect.
Nice Job Guys.
We all knew that there was some raw talent shining through in Disturbed even amongst the corporate nu-metal era of the 2000s, but boldly covering, paying homage and even improving upon an original is ways is as rare a thing as there is in the music world. It proves how much of artists they are when you begin to think of them beyond the narrow confines of their frequent genre
Very gratifying to know Paul Simon really liked this version! I do too.
Disturbed's rendition of the song gives "Sounds of Silence" a whole new meaning!!! - very profound!
I bet Paul Simon felt extremely flattered and honoured that such a tremendous cover had been made of his beautiful song. It means different things to different people and yet all minds unite to say how amazingly David sings the song.
doesnt really mean different things to people. However the meaning behind the song has changed. Paul and Art sang it as a light, airey and gentle warning to all. David sang it with the sounds of annoyance and anger and it comes across as rage that no one listened to the warning that came before.
My parents showed me, Simon and Garfunkel years ago. They taught me the value of their music, and what it meant given their climate and the music scene at the time. While my parents didn’t like the intensity of this cover, it absolutely tears me to shreds every single time I hear it. It’s so masterfully crafted, it pays respect to the original while giving it a new life. It’s absolutely my favorite cover.
I almost feel like as a last fare well paul Simon needs to write a song for disturbed to sing as a last farewell.
Paul Simon Feat. Disturbed. That would be a marvel to behold.
I’ve been a Hardcore obsessed Disturbed fan since day 1. I took my metal sons to see them at OZ Fest right before we moved to England and then…I was surprised by my then musician boyfriend now husband with guest list tickets to see them at Rock City in Nottingham. I was 2 feet from them and my life was then complete. David falls into my top 3 favourite vocalists. After 20+ years, he is still number 1. I’ve got the Disturbed logo tattooed. Yes….obsessed.
It's a truly stunning version, especially with the video clip
Wow…David isn’t as big as I thought he was. No matter, His voice is 10x bigger than ANYONE! And totally pure -no technical equipment necessary
