The Last Graduate is the second in Naomi Novik's Scholomance series; it's also pretty great. Listen to us dissect why.

    Okay. First off.
Your channel is the sole reason I got into reading again so thank you so much for that.
I’ve been having a blast for the most time but holy shit I hate this book so much. I’m a bit more than halfway through and I don’t think I’ll be finishing it because the way my brain glazes over when I try to read this thing is astonishing. It’s like my mind is a lotus leaf to Novik’s literary water. El’s inner voice is so overwhelming and dense while mostly describing what feels like montages upon montages of things that I should find extremely interesting and tense but feel just detached from.
Novik started building an interesting relationship between El and Orion in the first book but completely dropped the ball in this one! THERE IS NOTHING THERE! The only on-page communication between them is El insulting / reprimanding Orion and him whining ALL THE TIME. I’m on page 240 of not even 400 and he is basically unchanged from the end of book 1. That’s terrible character work in my opinion.
Liu and Chloe also didn’t get nearly enough development but I have to stop here or I’ll write you an essay missing a lot of commas. I will still pick up Spinning Silver but man this put a damper on my excitement for Naomi Novik. I’m really glad you like it though, I just needed to vent and this seems to be a good place to air my grievances with books.
On a different note, I just reread The Scorpio Races because of you and I loved it even more than the first time over twelve years ago. The weaving of atmosphere in that book is absolutely stunning to me.
I’ll go back to lurking now. Thank you for making this channel!

I’m crying! I loved all the twists and turns not to mention how El became so OP and became like the “mommy” duck to all the baby freshmen, who followed her in a little line.

Mommy Duck El was my favoriteeeeeee. I loved the juxtaposition between her mother as the happy hedgewitch who heals and people pilgrimage to and then El, dark Mommy Duck protecting a whole school! - Maria

I finished the book, screamed into a pillow for 5 minutes, and then jumped on YT to find what people are saying... and found you!
How awesome are you guys! I really enjoyed this video and agree with you 100%... (not about HP tho! Half Blood Prince was my fav book 😆)

I stomped around my house for 10 minutes yelling while my husband laughed at me 😂 same exact reaction! I love everything Naomi Novik has written, and I love her writing style. I know there's been criticism of the stream of consciousness style of these books, but honestly I really like it - I like learning all about the world and the lore, and all the different workings of the magic system

I’ve been obsessed with this book since reading it months ago, and this discussion is *everything*!!! Ugh, this series is actually so good and I wish more people read this book (or at least gave the first book another chance).
I completely agree with you guys on how the story didn’t at all go the expected route, yet it makes 110% complete sense. Like Maria said, the theme of “unity despite differences” and the purpose of the *School* itself… everything was leading up to this, and done in a way that’s perfectly believable (which is a feat in and of itself!!)
Also, El and Orion are stinkin cute 😭😭😭 I love them so much 😭😭😭

I love this book series. I have listened to it on audio book more than 20 times, and I have no regrets. There are some interesting theories about Orion and the school both having trouble seeing maleficers, and there being a connection between mawmouths and enclaves being built.

aha yes, I felt so gratified when I found out I was right about the first mawmouth and Bangkok! It was my first thought when the enclave going down was found out.

The chances outside arnt 1 in 7; the book mentions that number when someone is saying that would need to be the minimum chances they would need to get outside for there plan to be worth it. I forgot the exact chances but i think it was around 5% for a wizard kid to reach adult hood outside.

I have not read these books yet but from the way you talk about them they sound like a fun read that I would definitely like to pick up at some point.
What I fail to understand lore-wise is how is the students' chances of survival higher when they are in the school rather than outside. The school is literally already a giant honeypot since it has plenty of young wizard snacks and no adult "protection" whatsoever. The enclaves have big (i assume) populations of strong/hardened adult wizards who pose no desirable target to the demos whilst also being able to provide protection to their children. The school on the other hand has a bunch of inexperienced/untrained students and, since Elle's appearance dictated an "everyone for themeselves" kind of mentality that to me sounds like a prime demon snack buffet. It might be something I missed in your first video since I tend to space out sometimes but I would really appreciate an explanation.
Also great video. I recently stumbled onto your channel and I have been binging all of your videos. I really like how you are not afraid to tear into a book and provide geniune critisism without sugar-coating. As a new/aspiring writer, your videos have been way more helpfull to me as advice and feedback than all the authortuber's "advice" vids (which is also hwo I found your channel). Keep up the great work!

Does anywhere in this trilogy mention dracula, the devil, or controlling weather while riding a flying dragon?

What happens when I comment before finishing the video is that I make multiple comments. 😅 but I wanted to point out that the chances of survival outside of the school is 1:20, not 1:7. She mentions in the book that if they could find a way to bring the chances of survival outside of the school to 1:7, less kids would risk being in the school. But 1:20 is just too high and it makes the scholomance a better gamble.

I noticed a typo in the video's title: "Noami" instead of Naomi.

Not sure if i find it funny, but yes most german accent attempts are just bad. And wrong.
To be clear, every other language accent will have a bit, but with german, its so bad usually, its pronounced harder in a way but shouting its not louder or angrier, its just more precise?! . Like they always do, it just being faster at the end and rrroling the tongue more. I rspect anyone who dont butcher that hillarious,

The most famous speeches in German are Hitler's, and he wasn't using a regular German accent. He was using theatrical German, specifically designed for the stage. That style seeped into the stereotypical German accent.
