They forgot a significant amount of percussion instruments so here's a list of the missing instruments. Bass drum Tambourine Marimba Glockenspiel Chimes Gong Tubular bells And of course, the all mighty triangle!!
Lol and don't forget they forgot a truckload of hand percussion. Like maracas, Castanets, flexatone, vibraslap, Agoge bells, cowbells, guiro and the cabasa
there are so many more percussion instruments that they missed! Celesta/Celeste ,Bongos, Woodblock, Tambourine, Glockenspiel, Maraca's, Piano, Bass drum, Gong and we can't forget the triangle
For all of you saying that they “forgot” a significant number of percussion instruments…no, they didn’t. Obviously, including EVERY percussion instrument, or even just the commonly used ones would likely result in a 10 min+ video (or something around that). I’m sure that they are just trying to provide a sampling of instruments that are iconic and recognizable. Including more obscure instruments like the agogo bells, guïro, etc. would just be superfluous. This video is not entitled, “Every percussion instrument.” Personally, I’m glad that they went for quality over quantity here.
That is a marimba not a xylophone. While the wooden marimba is in the xylophone family, a xylophone has metal notes, the marimba's are wooden like the one he demonstrates here. The best timpani are the best tuned ones. I liked this as a great starter, there are so many different percussion instruments. Who is the musician? He did a great job. This was a good video to teach beginners the magnificent world of classical orchestral instrument families, namely the percussion. Instruments you hit or strike. Piano, clavichord, harpsichord, celeste are in the percussion family as well though they have strings. The next video in the playlist is perfect after showing Peter Pears narrating "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" featuring London Symphony Orchestra. The narration is best before the instrumental version however, the performers and amazing camera work is better in the next video. My elementary general music students were inspired by your playlist. Thank you so much!
They are putting the instruments in a family according to how they're operated, because with your criteria, which is how the sound is made, there would be no such thing as a keyboard instrument.
0:02 Cymbals
0:08 Snare drum
