He will attack other states.” Polish President Andrzej Duda speaks about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the implications for other countries in the region. His comments come after he visited the White House along with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Duda speaks on Bloomberg Television’s “Balance of Power.”
The woman interviewer may not understand what the 2% spending means. It is not a payment or dues to NATO, it is a 2% of their own GDP in spending towards their own military. You need to study the subject before asking your questions.

If USA decides to stop funding Ukraine war and it limits its involvement in NATO (per Trump) then I guess it's only fair that Poland and other countries on the eastern flank start developing nuclear capabilities. If USA is out of the picture and everyone is for himself. BTW, article 5 has been invoked once since inception of NATO and it was right after 9/11. Entire NATO followed USA to Afghanistan and Iraq. It was about working together towards common cause and I don't think any European country presented bill to USA for maintaining their military contingent for the entire decade.
Afghanistan/Iaq was an ISAF force, not NATO. To your point, would you be happy with US support in proportion to NATO's response after 911?

There seems to be a misconception about the 2% figure that NATO countries are bound to spend on defence. It is NOT a subscription fee to pay for NATO! It is the amount of a countries own GDP that they should spend on their OWN defence capabilities.
That's right what you say. But it is strange that Latvia has a 2.3% defense budget and the Netherlands 1.47%, while the Netherlands is 75x richer than Latvia.

@@22ergie The Dutch bought into the peace delusion, like so many other European countries. The Eastern flank countries (minus some exceptions like Hungary) never believed that Russia was a peaceful country. That is why the lobbied to join NATO, which arguably saved them (at least so far). I think the 2% is practically an entrance or membership fee. At least in the current climate, even though it is not so in actuality. I am fine treating it as such.

Budgetary spending shouldn't be measured as a percentage of GDP. GDP is a measure of market value of all goods produced in a country, therefore a government can't dispose of private property. GDP shows what the country produced and it's not a value that anyone can spend, because it's not physically available to any entity, it's privately-owned.
