I would argue that paying people $5 a day when they have no other option so they're essentially forced into work for them rather than the alternative of nothing and making them work 12 hour days and get one day a week off. Doesn't matter if you're sick or whatever. No vacation days, your housing solely depends on your ability to show up to work every single day. That's something american's don't realize and will never fully understand because they've never had to experience anything even remotely like that.

Soo happy to see someone talking about this. The average salary for working 6 days a week is 300 dollars a month. That's not a livable wage. Rent for a cheap place is 300 dollars a month. Construction company owners still build 300k-800k dollar homes, but they pay all their employees 300 a month. That means the owner of the company will make 150k profit from a 300k house. In the states 100k would need to go to employees so the owner makes 50k in profit, which is still good. 50k profit would be enough to live a comfortable life for a year in the Dominican Republic.

My family from Veracruz has sugar cane fields. They would actually set the whole land area on fire and then the next day the workers would come in and stay for the next months to cut and carry out the canes. All the housing and food was provided by my grandpa and grandma. Once the sugar cane was processed they would get a pension. sugar canes are so good freshly cut pure sweet

Other haitians are working in the tourist area making a descent living some others are in call centers that pay 1500-2000 a month which in DR is a good salary since rent of a 3 bed 1 bath apartment in the city is 200 bucks.
