- In this #IndicTalk, Meenakshi Jain discusses the response of temple patrons and priests to the attacks on Hindu temples in the medieval period. She informs us that in several instances, ascetic sects were militarized and organized into akharas (martial arts/wrestling schools) to protect Hinduism from iconoclastic fervour.
She also informs how Aurangzeb’s policies prompted an exodus of deities from Braj in 1669. As a result, the deities of the Govindadeva, Gopinath, Madan Mohan, Radha Vallabh and several other temples sought shelter in nearby Rajasthan. In the case of South India, the burial of bronzes occurred on a very large scale.
One of the most famous cases of buried bronzes was that of the Pathur Nataraja where in the face of an impending attack, temple officials had ceremoniously buried the Nataraja bronze which was later recovered. On the whole, this talk narrates how countless temples in North and South India confronted the threat of Islamic Iconoclasm and responded in ingenious ways to protect the deities.

The Sriranganatha temple was attacked but Swamy Desika had a wall made to cover the garbhagriha . The festive deity of Rangnatha was placed before it . The forces of Kafur took it away but even that deity was retrieved and is still worshipped. The original deities of the pre khilji era are all safe .

Extremely fortunate to hear ma'am . So much of our school is lost in learning such fabricated history, more so is the systemic way of colonization still being carried out in the name of education. In today's time, these incidents sound like some stories in movies because extremely rare to find people with such dedication and integrity......Salute to all of them .

I recently read this book about ancient wisdom from India 'Truth' by Aman Jain. It is the latest book in this genre and I loved the way it covered all my questions about life, soul and karma. A must read in my opinion

I would like to add another story of cloves well prooved iconoclast ideology.....in1757 or so when Clive attacked Chandannagar French colony he not only broke the lovely idol of Nandadulal the love of Chandannagar but Also Looted His temple....and threw the pieces in the pond behind... Not only that he fired a canon on the beautiful temple..... But I salute the faith of the people who resume the worship in Lord Nandadulal's picture... Which we still find in the temple and his lotus feet to yet broken was preserved as asthi ( what I feel) and other parts of His body was immersed in Ganga Maa of Kashi..... This shows how people loved Him not as a deity but A Human being.... The Lotus feet is now displayed in the french museum of Chandannagar.

Ma'am you must also know how the Srirangam temple deity was saved by Ramanuja by sending the deity with the Muslim warlord's daughter who loved it. Till today you have a Muslim nachiar sthal inside Srirangam that serves veg biryani as prasad.

आलुषानि एहवु फुरमायु, मढ़ रहावउ सुनउ।

अलफ खान ने फरमान दिया, मंदिर बिना प्रतिमा का रहेगा,
इस भूत (मूर्ति) को दिल्ली भेजो, वहाँ इसे चूने में बदल देंगे
कन्हड़ दे प्रबन्ध में कवि पद्मनाभ ने सोमनाथ की दुर्दशा पर भगवान शिव से जो प्रार्थना की है वह बहुत मार्मिक है पाठकों को हिंदुओं के इस दर्द को पढ़ना चाहिए, जिसे अधिकांश हिन्दू ब्राह्मणो ने शिव के सृजन और विनाश के सिद्धान्त से जोड़कर उसका असर खत्म कर दिया है।
आगइ रुद्र घणइ कोपनलि, दैत्य सवे तइं वाल्या।
तइं पृथ्वी मांही पुण्य बरताव्यां, देवलोकि भय टाल्या॥ १०१
पहले रुद्र, आपने भयंकर कोपानल (क्रोधाग्नि) में सारे दैत्य भस्म कर दिये।
आपने पृथ्वी पर पुण्य का प्रसार किया, देवलोक में भय का माहौल टाला॥

आपने क्रोध से कामदेव को भस्म कर दिया, त्रिपुर को ऐसे समाप्त कर दिया जैसे तिनके को पवन उड़ा देती है।

(खिलजी सेना ने) गाँव जला दिये, देश उजाड़ दिये, पूरे नगर का विध्वंस कर दिया।
पूरे सौराष्ट्र में कोलाहल मचाया, लोगों की पूरी सम्पत्ति लूट ली।
