  • A super fun tarot tag!
And to be clear, I might have been a bit too harsh on myself. I'm sorta fun at parties. Fun-ish. Fun adjacent.

I'm so happy to see you jump in on this tag. It's such a fun one 😃.
Loved the diss of the Yule Oracle. Unpopular opinions are in my opinion the best thing to watch / hear. I don't have this deck but seeing everyone rave about it, and about the Samhain too, I've been considering getting it. The poems / incantantions, or whatever those are, are one of the reasons I haven't bought it yet. I'm not sure what would I be supposed to do with them in a reading. I'm also not a native English speaker and for this reason they seem harder to understand.
Holiday blessings! 🎄✨💖 Oh, almost forgot. Winter is the best! It's my fav season 😁

Oooh! A fellow winter lover!!! Honestly, if you feel moved by the images in the Oracles and feel like you can ignore the poems, just do. It's a reasonably priced deck that celebrates a beautiful, often uncelebrated season with lovely artwork. And (maybe I didn't make this clear enough), SOME of the poems are lovely. Thank you for commenting!

I just found your channel via your comment on another video, and I subscribed immediately! Thank you for caring about the English language and its proper usage, for mentioning the faults of the SOTW Yule oracle to your audience instead of simping over it like all the other creators (are they getting paid to hype it up?!?) and for calling out Rockpool Publishing for not doing their job. My faith in humanity is restored. I am so frustrated at all the glowing reviews that lead me to waste my money on this deck. I feel like I got bamboozled. Why is no one else reading the card text in a video? It's like they are trying to hide the worst facet of the deck from the public and it feels willful and dishonest. I feel like I can't trust those creators for their deck reviews now.
I have to add- when I've made comments to other creators about my disappointment in this deck, I have gotten replies saying "it's like that because it's poetry" um... NO. That is not poetry. That is someone dumping alphabet soup on the cards and calling it a day. Don't excuse it away by calling it poetry, people. It's hot garbage.
I'm most angry because the art is actually beautiful and evocative of the season, and this deck had so much potential, only to be rendered useless. And now every time I see it in my tarot cabinet I get angry at the deck, the fluff reviews, and my wasted money.

Loved your rant! lol That really was inexcusable. I wish you would take a red pen to the book and then send it back to Rockpool asking if those affirmations were run through a translation into some other language and then back into English. lol

Just picked it up and loving it (even though I feel like the pips and over-maleness of it should bother me more than they do), it just works and I'm loving it.

😀 pedantic jerkdom! Love it! I SO agree with you and my family know how this sort of thing winds me up. They really should check on the grammar and sentence construction. ( There are a lot of grammar irritations though like putting apostrophes in the wrong place and people (including many in the media) saying different to instead of different from etc! Think I’m also part of the nerd club 😀. Really interesting comments Allie and love your choice of decks.

I don't have Seasons of the Witch Oracle but I understand grammar snobbery! 🤣 That would drive me insane. I was in all the chats for the Bonestone and loved the process but never got it. 😔 Somehow I knew I wouldnt have used it...

Thank you so much for this hilarious video. Although I've been somewhat interested in the Seasons of the Witch oracle decks, they've always seemed a bit . . . I don't know, kitschy for me, and a bit one dimensional. But now that I've seen this, I couldn't. As a former journalist I'd go nuts (not to mention the Virgo sun). Great tag, I've enjoyed watching all the responses and thank you, as always, for your insights and humor. Btw, one of my biggest tarot regrets, if not my only tarot regret, is not getting the Bohemian Gothic. I have a box full of decks I don't use. If you're ever interested in a trade, please let me know, I would be thrilled to have that deck.

Nice to hear your choices. I bought the Yule oracle before I worked with the Samhain one. I didn't get along very well with the Samhain one at the time and so was worried when I opened the Yule one...but have to say that I am liking it much more that the other one and it is speaking much better to me. Havine said that it is quite a dark vibe for the time of year though and I tend to ignore the poetry as I agree it is weird. Not sure I will be rushing out to buy the next one!

Hellooooo fellow winter girl. I LOVE winter. I live in Washington, but I'd move to Ca in a heartbeat! I gotta know what hard to find deck you are looking for...you know I'm an OOP lover. I thought of 'flex' in a different direction...like to be a smarty pants. Your rage is wonderful! I knew I wouldn't get along with those oracles...pretty much for the same reason. I'm a tarot lover. My wrath deck is a long sad story, not nearly so interesting. It's funny, I have a really strong connection with Bohemian Gothic, and NOT Pagan Otherworlds...I'm so glad there's lotsa decks. And, the Victorian Romantic issue? You're right, it's gorgeous, you probably wouldn't use it that much...but it is a cool thing to have on your shelf. I did 78 days of tarot with it, and it's the only Baba book I've read cover to cover. I love to do a dark/light reading with BoGo and VR - great tension between the two decks. Also, I LOVE your channel! You are the real deal and that is super cool in my opinion.

Oh my gosh, I also picked the season of the witch oracles for my wrath decks! 🤣🤣 for the exact same reasons! It’s really cathartic to listen to someone else having the same problems I do with these little poem things! Some of them make zero literal sense because the wording is so convoluted. Like it’s trying to sound poetic so hard that it looses the meaning. I’ve been using the Yule oracle for advent season, and it’s actually been ok. I just completely ignore the text. 🤣

@@AllieSailorFathomFiveTarot I wonder if since this one was a popular Kickstarter they just kept as much of it the same as possible? I do wish at the least they could have caught those that truly make no sense and the mix up of the thys and thees etc. And I know that a lot of people like the text on the cards and how it reads. I’m just so disappointed because if it were truly poetic I would be so excited. But it makes the experience of working with them so awkward and cringey.

@@AllieSailorFathomFiveTarot and actually (just finishing your video now, I didn’t have time to finish it before 🤣) I find the guidebook well written. It’s not always exactly my kind of woo, but the extra keywords make sense and the text is lovely and usually very supportive. So I’m just pretending the poems don’t exist atm 😂

  • @altvox8936
    @altvox8936 Před 2 lety +1

I feel so seen and validated by your reaction to the Seasons of the Witch Yule oracle! I totally agree! But even if the grammar were fixed the meanings of the sayings on the cards also don’t make sense and don’t fit the cards in my opinion. HOWEVER, the book has good keywords for each card and smarter text for each card! So do read the book. But now what? Do I cut off the text on the cards? Do I cover the text with a new piece of paper with the better/actually good keywords from the book on it? How will the deck shuffle if I modify it? UGH! The art is so good, and the book is so good, why why did they ruin the cards with the lame text?? And why are tarot people not also complaining the way you and I are so that Rockpool and the author will hear the message and do better next time? This is going to be a large series of decks and I don’t want the rest to be ruined too. I’d love to hear what you decide to do in terms of modification of the cards. Even more, I’d like to hear what you think of the book!

I thought I'd made a comment agreeing about "Seasons of the Witch," but perhaps it was too critical and got taken down. Toned-down version is this: whether there was deliberate intention behind the ungrammatical affirmations or not, it would have driven me crazy too! That's all. Perhaps the mild grammar snob in me gets a little too excited when it meets a fellow grammar person, lol!
***edit, I found the comment; it was just accidently posted on the wrong vid, lol (apparently, I am not great at navigating youtube). Here is the original comment, in its full, wrathful glory:
I'm so glad to hear someone on tarot tube rant about Seasons of the Witch Yule! Thank you! I didn't want Samhain (way too many super pale, thin, black-haired young women...um, can we escape that witch trope pretty please?), but I wanted Yule because of the winter imagery and the lack of winter decks on the market, but after watching Boho Tarot's review, in which she read each affirmation, I was speechless at how badly written the affirmations were! I consider myself only a mild grammar snob (I don't begin to compare with my English-teacher sister) but I *am* a words person, and just...what the what?! It went beyond sloppy (e.g. missing periods, confusing "thee" and "thy") to full on reading like a bad English translation with missing subjects, adjectives in place of objects, etc. It left me with the impression of a pretentious attempt to sound more magical and witchy by using odd/incorrect grammar. If that's not the case, many apologies, but as you said, if that wasn't a deliberate decision, how in the world did the publisher not catch it? And what I really don't understand is how those affirmations specifically get so much love from reviewers online (or sometimes very mild criticism). P.S. It's okay (I hope!) to have strong and sometimes controversial opinions and, frankly, I don't think there's enough of that on tarot tube (I would say with Katey Flowers as an exception, and your style reminds me of her!)

I’m right there with you about the grammar and punctuation. I would throw that deck away…or maybe trim all the words off and write your own words on it.
