Welcome to a new series of videos, one I've been thinking of starting for a while now! In this video I'm starting a hike around the coastline of Kent, and in the future I will be carrying on into Sussex, Hampshire and beyond. I'll be carrying out the hikes as and when I have time and opportunity and public transport allows, following the coastline as much as possible.
This journey starts in Woolwich, where I started a previous walk along the Thames ending in Windsor. I walked east this time in excellent February weather (fresh, sunny, no wind), along the river past massive industrial areas, Crossness Pumping Station, Dartford Creek, Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, Greenhithe and into Gravesend. Over 20 miles hiking over flat terrain in around 8 hours.
The next part, Gravesend - Rochester via Isle of Grain will be a bit more rural and a bit more relaxed, spreading the hike over 2 days. See you then! 😁
Nice video!
I remember the River Darent well, goes on forever doesn't it! Haha
When you're back in Gravesend, don't miss the Pocahontas statue! Really interesting bit of history!
Looking forward to your adventure around the Kent Coast 😄
Thanks Sidders! I definitely took some inspiration from your vlogs! Will be watching them again soon before I set off on Part 2! I walked through the Heritage Quarter in Gravesend on the way back to the station and it was actually quite nice, I'll be checking that out and the Pocahontas statue!
@@no_soy_rubio Happy my videos helped inspire you! 😁
Yeah Gravesend has so much history and interesting sites to see, I think it's reputation is blown out of proportion and is actually underrated.
Can't wait to see what you think 😄
As always wonderful sharing my friend 🌟 Like 👍 61
Thank you! Cheers! 😁
Very much enjoyed your video, there's something very special about the Thames. Even as you call it sludge, the Thames mud can glisten in the sun and look stunning. The wildlife along the Thames drew me as a boy and is used as a corridor by birds on migration. Have seen some amazing birds you would never expect to see in an urban environment. That made it even more special. Thank you look forward to watching the next sections
Great to hear you enjoyed it Andrew, I agree the Thames is unique and the mud does really give off a shine in the sun 🌞 I was in the Thames Estuary recently and saw avocets and grey herons amongst other birds I didn't know. Hope you enjoy the other parts
So fun!!! This looks like a really great day 🎉❤
Thanks Britt! It was cold, and long, but fun 😁🤠
More awesome footage of England & our good old river Thames freshest water around better than highland springs lol 😀😀😀😀
Haha Peckham Spring made by Trotters Independent Traders 😅
Excellent video my friend 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 😁🤠
Beautiful sharing
Thank you 😁
Beautiful coast and great video!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Jose 😁
Superb walk,,, fellow Gillingham FC fan.
Thanks mate, UTG 🔵⚫️⚪️
Hey Matt 😊 nice first video of the series. Like that it’s showing the realities of the trail and not just all the highlights.
Thanks Yasmin! It will get a bit more scenic as the series goes on (I hope!) 😅
Nice date for Valentines Day 😂 enjoyed this coastal hike, very different from the usual wild ones you do. Interesting streets and industrial, but also the skyline views quite stunning 😁
Thanks Keith! Very different indeed! Probably the first video where valentines day and Sewage have been combined! At least on youtube anyway 😬😬😅
I did the same walk in 2013, changed a lot since then power station at Dartford no longer there. I did in stages ended up moving to Gravesend, absolutely love the place and it's really friendly, never had any problems a bit rough and ready in places but an historic town. Big connection with Charles Dickens with 'Great Expectations'
Cheers Paul, people are definitely chatty and less pretentious in North Kent than where I live now down in Sussex that's for sure!
খুব সুন্দর লাগলো ভিডিও টা অসাধারণ👏✊👍
😁🤠
Ahhh, memories memories of early school years, 3 buses from Meopham to get to the beautiful Gravesend 😆
Sounds joyous 😂

By the way, great video, really enjoyed it along with the banter, don't miss Dartford or Gravesend at all
@@tumbletrousers9641 thanks mate! Yeah I'm looking forward to getting to the more beachey parts of Kent away from the Estuary
Happy heart day my dear
So grateful to be here as part of your journey..such a great hike .
Still watching
Thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️

I've really enjoyed this, Matt. The thing that always amazes me is that you can dump everything you want at your local tip/recycling plant, yet people still choose to tip where they feel like it. The Council end up picking it all up, and the Taxpayer foots the bill. Totally unnecessary. But you can bet that it will be the people residing in those caravans who will be the ones that do it. Not always, but 99% of the time. Our Island Nation has a proud Seafaring history, and it was nice to see some of the cannons of yesteryear and the pill boxes. It is a shame that people use them to relieve themselves as one day they will eventually be reclaimed by the sea. It's nice to hear that effluence is used to power the city and urban conurbations. I lived in Hendon for 2 years whilst in the RAF, and I can tell you that I was glad to leave. I'm just not a city person. I'd love a house in the Peaks miles from anywhere, but I'm content to live on the outskirts of a rural town. Don't get me wrong, London can be a beautiful place but it was too busy/hectic for me. Having said that, I've really enjoyed your vlog, and I look forward to the rest in the series. Thanks for sharing, Matt. How many miles walked?
Thanks Chris! Yep, Fly tipping is a big issue in that part of the world. I've never understood it either. We do indeed have a proud seafaring tradition which is on display all along the Thames Estuary. I'm not a city person either. OK for a visit but I wouldn't want to live in one again. The next part of this walk will be far more rural and will be a wild camp, I'm looking forward to it. I believe it was around 22 miles, all flat though, so the legs were fine but feet were a little sore by the end. Thanks as always for watching!

That’s very very long walk!!🚶🏻
About 23 miles I think!
Hi, Matt. Wow ! Two things surprised me. One is that you are not in a mountainous area and the other is a very beautiful coastal view 😁Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend 😉
Haha thanks Juli! Sadly there aren't any mountains local to where I live 😢 have a great weekend too 😁🤠😁
Great video! You definitly made the best of some awkward bits! I love your goal!

Thanks dude glad you enjoyed 🤠😁🤠
It sounds like a fascinating journey full of interesting sights and experiences along the Thames River and this walk seems like a fantastic way to see the Kent coast.
Thank you 😁🤠😁
Hi Matt! This one was a bit different - but I really enjoyed it! I think it's great to see a different side of life. I loved the sludge and sewage fun facts, eww!! Looking forward to the next part of your journey along the Kent coast 👍😊
Thank you! Yep pretty gross huh! At least smell-o-vision hasn't been invented yet so you didn't get a whiff of it 😆
Best of luck on your new challenge mate! Never really knew how industrialised the Thames is once move out of London, hoping to learn more about our coastlines through this series 👌🏾
Thanks mate, should be good as it'll be ongoing and can pretty much do it whenever I fancy it! The Coastline will get a little more picturesque after this first video 🤣
Awesome hike destination my friend, the view is amazing!
Thanks dude 🤠
Great video. It's interesting to watch. The industrial locations are interesting too. Good luck my friend

the coastline around Kent sounds lovely and the videos and experience when you carry onto go to Sussex, Hampshire etc. I imagine will be so worthwhile - nicely filmed video overall 😁

Great exploring Kent mate and very nice hike, love it and I enjoyed it till the end 36:04
Thanks Anthony 😁😁😁
In odd fashion, I watched your Gravesend to Grain video before this one. But in fairness, that's the segment of this walk I am going to tackle in Spring. Longest hike I will have ever done.
Excellent! It's a nice walk (if a little samey after Cliffe). Loads of history
@@no_soy_rubio I'm very excited for it. I love barren, isolated walks. My favourite so far has been around the isle of portland in Dorset - such an alien landscape! But this will be my first walk with so few amenities along the way. Do you have any advice for things to bring? A map? Waterproof socks? Sorry, long-winded reply, but I don't know many people who have attempted this walk! Thanks.
@@ellielou4268 ah nice, I haven't quite made it to Portland yet! I'd recommend taking food, water and waterproofs but as for orienteering, as long as you keep the Thames on your left you can't really go wrong! I use the Alltrails map to get around with and it hasn't let me down yet!
@@no_soy_rubio thank you very much indeed!
gracias por tu compartir estos grandes lugares
Gracias liliana 🤠
That’s interesting hike my friend 👍👍👍
Thank you 😁🤠😁
Good for you Matt! This was actually interesting, you are an adventurous soul. Not at all like your recent videos, but it really works. It's good to do something very different. Well done! Sue
Thanks Sue! Yep it's not exactly palm trees and mountains but I still enjoyed it 😁 nice to explore the backyard a little bit even if it's not the prettiest!
Great tour my friend 👍
Thank you 🤠

this is really different hiking zone with your previous videos, but i enjoy it 😍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed 🤠😁🤠
Very interesting video 😍😍😍💯👍
Thank you 🤠😁🤠
The water feature at 36 mins is still going strong today. Its been gravesends best feature for the last 2 years
Which water feature is that?
@@no_soy_rubio it was the manhole cover in the street not far from the andrex building that is leaking so much water it's like a mini fountain. Love your vids btw.
@@harveycolven6540 ahh gotcha! 😂 thanks mate, appreciate it!
the place looks nice and interesting
Thank you 😁🤠😁
Hey Matt I think your pretty brave to film a urban Hike like this I know it’s really not what a lot want to see but I found it fascinating m8t👍🤠
I’m a sucker for an urban walk ( but I was glued to the TV for the whole 36 mins ) I can’t believe it myself 😳
Great film Matt 🙏🏼
Best wishes Simon 👍🤠
Cheers Simon, yeah I'm aware this isn't many people's cup of tea so not really worried about the view count! I personally quite like watching videos where people go to different places,(there's only so much of Mam Tor and Scafell Pike videos you can watch) so I'm doing this walk more for me than anyone else tbh haha
Thanks mate 😁
@@no_soy_rubio absolutely Matt 👍good on you mate 🤠👍
Happy weekend freind
You too 🥳

Merhaba Teşekkürler 😁
Hi Matt! Not the prettiest tour, but it definitely gives an idea of some of the realities of life and London's past with how they disposed of their waste. It was still fascinating seeing some of the water traffic. Have a great weekend!
Thanks Donna, yep very industrial but the next videos will become more rural and a bit nicer 😆
Nice video mate, I enjoyed it so much I've overlooked your little error at 24:54 🤣
Given there ain't much height difference between me and you I won't be going inside one of them things either haha
I don't get fly tippers, similar thing happens here. Also Gravesend sounds a lot like certain parts of the Forest!
What was the error mate lol something to do with the crossing I'm guessing 🤣 yeah fly tippers are absolute 🔔🔚s mate!
@@no_soy_rubio Yeah it's not the M25 that bit haha but I'll let you off as most people think it is!
@@no_soy_rubio Agree with the comment about the fly tippers too
@@driving_all_over yeah still part of the ring road then 🤣
@@no_soy_rubio So you should have said part of the orbital but A282 not M25 haha 🤣🤣
Thank you for sharing the beautiful scene like 🤝💯🔔👏OK my friend
Thank you my friend 🤠
Well at least it was a bright sunny day. Not an area I really know and possibly will continue to avoid. It must be so dispiriting for local residents when others use their environment as a tip. Being downstream from London is never going to be the prettiest with the inevitable industrialisation. It will be a long time before historic environmental damage is completely reversed. I did think the area was starting to have an effect when you started to compare part of the route with the south of France. While this part of the world is unlikely to ever be pretty it can be interesting to explore these grittier areas. What I find so disappointing is the fly tipping and continuing pollution that is so apparent. Better luck next Valentines Day!
Thanks Ivor, not the most picturesque of walks but I still enjoyed it in a way. The flytipping drives me mad! I must be a glutton for punishment as I'm heading out today to walk the northern bank of the Thames from Woolwich-Tilbury. Wish me luck!
@@no_soy_rubio Hope you find plenty of interest and eventually I will get to see for myself.
Nice 🌹🌹🌹🌹
