Kent Coast Hike | Part 2 | Gravesend - Rochester 🇬🇧 'Epic Wild Camp at Grain Fort'

- Part 2 of the Kent Coast Walk
Filmed April 2023
Starting off at Gravesend Train Station, I went for a little walk around the town, to the Heritage Quarter, Pocahontas Statue and New Tavern Fort. I was then off out of Gravesend, eventually through the industrial areas and on the marshland alongside the Thames. A quick stop at Shornemead Fort and then I was on the Hoo Peninsula, for the next 14 or so miles.
Eventually I made it to Grain where I camped in the Tower, it was an epic night, somewhere I'd wanted to camp and explore for a long time and it didn't disappoint.
The following day was a long one, and by the time I'd hiked 15 or so miles I was pleased to arrive in Rochester, my finish point for this leg.

Hello everyone, sorry for the ultra long video this week 😂
Haha nothing wrong with that mate

Hi Matt! OMG, you're so brave sleeping overnight in the abandoned fort (in the room with the...ahem... oddly-titled name) - with just a couple of "interesting" drinks to give you courage! 👏👏 It looked so cold too. I enjoyed your long trek and hearing about the area. It's an interesting contrast to most of your other hikes. Glad you made it safely to your destination 👍😊
It was pretty cold but luckily I was prepared for it 😁 appreciate you watching, as always 😄

Hello Matt. Amazing Kent coast hike. So many interesting monument, fortress, beautiful nature. Especially I was very interested in the building at 27:18. It's dark inside and it looks scary 😱
However, the view from the rooftop is a beautiful view like Mont Saint-Michel. I never thought you would camp in this scary building 😁Thank you for wonderful adventure 😆😉
Thanks as always Juli! I've wanted to camp there for a few years now, so it was nice to finally do so! A little bit creepy for sure 😂
@@no_soy_rubio Glad you got your wish, Matt. But pretty creepy🤣 I always admire your courage😍
It's a very interesting place to explore, a majestic, well guided presentation indeed !! Greetings from India.
Thank you so much 😄
Nice video! Those huts you mentioned around 17:30 are actually the remains of an explosives factory that shut down in 1921, all the buildings are spaced far apart so an explosion in one building (which happened a few times) didn't take out the whole place
Ahh interesting! Sounds like the Gunpowder Works at Oare near Faversham, which actually did explode!
Muy bonito recorrido! gracias por mostrarnos lugares interesantes, saludos 🐶👩🏽👨🏻👍

Greetings, friend. The weather is very different from previous locations. Thanks for the great trip. Safe travels👍
Haha yes much darker here 😄
I`ve walked this path from Allhallows to Gravesend 4 times over the past 2 years. I do enjoy this walk, apart from the Cliffe to Cliffe pools part. It`s so long and monotonous
By the way, I also work at the haven park. You can pop into the marina bar for a drink. If not, we also have a mini mart
Totally agree, I wouldn't want to repeat the Cliffe part! If I remember right, there were a lot of kids around that day at Allhallows so I decided it probably wouldn't be too peaceful there amd kept it moving 😆
Gute Reise und wunderbare Landschaften und schöne Orte. Vielen Dank Freund für einen schönen Beitrag. Viele Grüße ❤
Danke schon 😁

@@no_soy_rubio you are welcome my friend
Me and my girlfriend are just 36 miles away from walking the entire boarder of kent. Just Faversham to Broadstairs to go. See if you can catch us LOL. Watching this walk brought back some nice memories. Grain was one of our favourite and most suprising places of the whole walk. So peaceful at times and a lot of hidden history. The fenced off path was a particularly annoying event for us too. I think you will enjoy the next leg up to kingsferry bridge. The only sad thing about the journey is the increased amount of fly tipping you are going to encounter, the closer to sheppey you get. If you can ignore that then you will have a good walk. Keep up the good work.
Good stuff Bob! I'm aiming to do Rochester-Margate within the next 2 weeks, that'll just leave me Margate-Folkestone (already done Isle of Sheppey and Folkestone-Rye). I'm originally from Sheppey so I've seen some of the fly tipping, it was also pretty bad on my last part around Dartford.
Very peaceful around Cliffe and Grain as you say, I'll definitely be back there for a more relaxed visit in the future! Definitely looking forward to the sandy beaches around Thanet
Ice video, awesome bhiking, thank you for sharing 🎉❤

Loved this! You're either really brave Or insane. I went to Grain Tower a few years ago. Fell all over the place on the causeway and decided to take my boots of and go barefoot. Bad move. My feet got cut to ribbons. There seemed to be loads of broken glass just under the surface of the sand. When I got to the tower there were noises from inside so I aborted. I would never stay alone overnight! And I'm not sure I'd be putting my sleeping bag on the floor in "the Cum Zone" either! But hats off to you!
A healthy mix of brave, insane and naive I think! That's bad news about your feet 😬 and noises? What kind of noises? It definitely is one of the creepier places I've spent the night 😂
@@no_soy_rubio There was someone inside, I think. My dog freaked out and bid a hasty retreat, using me as a human shield. A very creepy place!
@@grayfreeman oh wow, that would've freaked anyone out 😆

Soviet village in Kent, who knew 🤔 Nice tour of what you see if you choose to look, the good and the bad! I would feel uneasy overtaking those guys with guns 🍄
Yep, I prefer to show it for what it really is like! Gravesend wouldn't look out of place on a Bald & Bankrupt video haha 🍄

Hi Matt! It was nice to see a bit of England, of course I enjoyed seeing the statue of Pocahontas. I always wonder if she enjoyed her new life or missed her family. Lots of fences in this place! That long alley with the fence at the end would be frustrating with no warning sign on the other side. Also very glad you didn't get shot! Amazing landscape though and that was an amazing building to stay in - glad you didn't slip in the mud along the way, either! Have a great weekend!
Thanks Donna! Would have been a huge culture shock for Pocahontas for sure! Haha I'm glad the fellas with guns were friendly, I was going to ask what they were going to shoot but at the same time I didn't want them knowing the camera was on 😆 have a great weekend too 😁
I love your British videos, they spur me on to emigrate.

Thanks dude, bleak but kinda beautiful 😄
awesome view
😁😁😁
You can just make out the remnants of the causeway, it does look an imposing place. So lucky you had it to yourself. The graffiti artists love the place. I would have said pentagram too! Well done on calculating the tides both there and back. Alcoholic rolla cola and packaged pasta, but look at those cracking views of the coastline lit up. Great breakfast to start you on your day. That sounds more like a nightmare! Power stations, crazy airfields and shooting ranges, awesome stretch of the England Coast Path! Gosh it must have rained a lot in the night, very muddy. Do feel for your feet, you must have covered some serious miles on these two days. The village before the medway industry looked really quaint. Really enjoyed this Matt, epic adventure! ❤
Yeah, any abandoned place it seems the graffiti artists get there first! I made sure I went during the week so I'd have it to myself. Wouldn't have rated my chances on a Friday or Saturday night. My feet were in a pretty bad way actually, because I got them wet, the skin was very soft and I got a few blisters and a toenail came clean off (oddly that didn't hurt at all) Thanks for watching as always, I know that video went on a bit 🤣
@@no_soy_rubio it was a great vid mate, no need to apologise, just been a really mental weekend so had to sit it in two! The fort looming was a great breaking spot for us. Sorry to hear about those feet, yikes I hope it grows back alright. Roll on part three 👍
@@GENerationXplorers thanks mate! Need to start editing the Como videos in time for the weekend now!
Hi Matt. So sorry, I was out for filming at 2,280 ft above sea level and didn't see this short movie.
I will drop off my comment as soon as the theater opens,
I meant to watch this film with my 74 inch TV as I sip my Starbucks latte in the morning.
I am so beat tonight after K7S' premiere with 80 guests.
Thank you for your patience. ciao
Wow Ms K7S 80 guests on the premiere! If it weren't for the time difference between our sides of the pond I'm sure it'd be even more. I haven't been online much this week either, it's been a busy one. Ciao for now 😁
@@no_soy_rubio I look forward to watching your SHORT movie after all the UK gangs' premieres.
Goditi la vita. Preferisco vederti allo stato brado piuttosto che rimanere bloccato nel tintinnio di cemento.
Non vedere l'ora. saluti
@@ms.kayak7seas I have a much shorter movie being published in less than an hour from now. You might prefer to wait for that one. It was filmed in Italy 🇮🇹 😁
cool walking tour there mate
*full view always🥸Au💯the like is pressed👍👍*
Thanks mate 😁
I did gulp at the length Matt but you know what m8t i enjoyed every moment of the walk (fantastic stuff) the big take away for me was how quiet it was there (you tend to think of the south as being busy due to high density population ect)
Have a fab weekend mate
ATB Simon
Yeah lots of rabbiting on this video mate 🙈 definitely very quiet given how close it is to London, I'm sure it won't be like that forever!
Awesome vid mate, walked (and camped) that path a few times ….
Cheers Paul, will have to have a look at those videos!
Got some nice shops on the high street so it can’t be all bad! Gosh Pochahontas, what a young age. Nice statue to Liz too. Soviet village, how far have you walked already? Closed paths and narrow fences, men with guns looks sketchy! Giant lego bricks, i like that! This is a wellington boot walk! So many forts before you get to the beach. You certainly have those marshes to yourself, not a fly tipper or twitcher in sight! Love your optimism Matt! Erosion taking away all our bunkers back to the sea. Good swerve on the creche bar. Definitely doing this walk in reverse judging from the signs. Not envying those flies, especially so early in the year. Wow that fort looks a great place to camp. Will check in on this later! Cheers 🍻
Cheers Nick! I felt like I'd walked about 40 years back in time 😆 definitely could've done with wellies on the way to the Fort! Hope your weekend's going well!
@@no_soy_rubio cheers Matt, super excited to see the fort. A weekend long of youtube collabs. About to head out on several more, this is getting top billing tonight. 👍
@@GENerationXplorers sounds like a great weekend mate! Enjoy!
It is amazing that even near an Urban Conurbation you can find pockets and swathes of beauty. I really loved the Fort, I've seen it before on Subbex Channel who visit all things from past Wars. I'd love to spend the night there. Could it be that you slept so well as subconsciously knew that no one could be there. You definitely need a sleep expert 😂. A runway right next to power lines is a bit strange though. Another great vlog Matt, thanks for sharing. May the longer vlogs continue!!! I'm really enjoying it.😊
Excellent Chris, I'll have to check out the Subbex Channel. Maybe that is why I slept well, although I still vividly remember my dream, which is unusual for me. Maybe I do need to see a sleep expert 😆 Thanks as always for watching and hope (not hole) you're enjoying the Bank Holiday!

Very different indeed 😁 have a great weekend 😌
@@no_soy_rubio thank you, you too 👍😊
Fascinating. I personally would have spent 24 hours resting in the fortress because it looked like you’d become quite warm and cosy by morning
It was pretty chilly in the morning and as you're not *technically* supposed to be in there overnight I got out of there early 😁
@@no_soy_rubio how very law abiding of you. Irish people would bring their families there for a week and then post about it on TripAdvisor
… and then they’d complain about the room service, WiFi etc
@christianmorris8065 I think a private investor has bought the Fort now so that may not be too far from reality 😅
@@no_soy_rubio wow. That could be a really cool alternative holiday space
You have more guts than me, wild camping in an abandoned fort like that!
Hahaha I love it 😁
it looks devine
😁
The tank that's wedged is the water tank from that top bit with the roof and was pushed from there, water was pumped in from shore and into the header tank thus creating pressure for showers and drinking water. The place was a dump and full of cr@p the cleanest place to sleep was up top around the gun emplacement.
Ahhh makes sense, cheers. Yeah, not the cleanest but it would've been way too cold to kip up top that night!
@No Soy Rubio We kipped up top in Feb, it was a tad chilly 🤣
Did you just change your channel name? I've just noticed it. By the way, this is pretty much the first time I see Grain Fort, what a cool areas to explore. I bet every time you got places to go to and have fun, by the time you get back to your camp you'll be tired and sleep tight through the night. Take care!
Thank you! I changed my CZcams name maybe a year ago haha. It's not such a famous area actually. I did sleep very well that night as I was tired 😁
Again not the most scenic walk ever but there was a lot of interesting things to take in. As for your overnight I must admit to feeling a bit queasy at the thought of that old fort. It must be one of your most unusual overnights ever. I think the fact it featured in your dreams meant at some level you were a bit concerned. Not keen on estuarine mud myself so I`m pretty sure I would have passed on by. Interesting to see what I have been driving past for so many years.
Indeed, the dream was very vivid although I often have similar lucid dreams whilst camping, if I'm on a beach I'll often imagine the tide is much further in, if I'm on a hill or a mountain I'll imagine I'm closer to the edge. I think it's a kind of heightened alertness, as it doesn't feel like fear. Many thanks for watching!
Hi Matt,
Chevrolet Camaro 1:46
I appreciate this photo of Pocahontas, Native American above the beautiful sky in the background 2:48 Fortunate or unfortunate, willing or unwilling, She followed her destiny I am glad to see somebody still think of her.
I did like Queen Elizabeth II but the building construction is eye-sore, isn't it? 3:58
Stunning to see the historical military buildings and Coast Artillery Are those buildings open to the public?
Have you try google map before you head out to the destination if there is unexpected road blockage?
Are you wearing bright color? The hunters may aim anything moves in the dark 8:09
Ahh ponies? Are you hiking in the farmland? 8:34
I really like your choice of music here at the abandoned building with graffiti.
Over grown vegetation worries me about ticks. Are there?
Unique hike on the flat land
Quietude occupies the space
Make it perfect place to cleanse his mind
You gave me a chuckle, explaining such a regulation 23:24
OMGoodness, I though you are joking. You walk on the low tide beach? 25:41
How did you find this fort?
"You are a valiant worrier! I take my hat off for your determination, staying at fort standing in the water!
I truly think that you have an innocent child's mind, disguising in an adult appearance of 40's."
Wow, propeller aircraft fly in the air by the powerline! 43:22
I wonder how long distance you walked on this journey Now you can wash your pair of hiking shoes and toe Stay dry.
Thank you for taking me to quite a venturous place in the Great Britain.
Ciao, so sorry for my belated comment The Powe outage wiped off my comment before I sent it.
Hey Ms K7S! That's actually a McLaren, a British prestige car manufacturer. You don't see many as they're not affordable 😆 there's also not many Chevys here, or Cadillacs, the main American cars we have are Fords. There used to be some huge Ford factories in the UK but now they're made cheaper in other countries.
Absolute eyesore of a car park 😆 and yes, the Fort is open for anyone to wander around 😁 Pocahontas was willing, but unfortunate to succumb to disease at a very early age.
Yep, there are ticks, I've been bitten 2 or 3 times, years ago.
Hahaha yes I think you're right about my child's mind 😆 it was great walking out to the Fort and being cut off at high tide 😎
Haha I know, dangerous from the plane eh 😅 it was about 35 miles altogether. My boots were filthy and I very much enjoyed my hot shower when I got home 😁
@@no_soy_rubio Ooops, I have no knowledge of vehicles. I don't' know how some PPL can describe about models and yrs. watch out ticks that bring dieses and may permanently ruin your health.
