Adventure to the Fort forgotten at Sea - Grain Tower Battery Episode 1

- Grain Tower Battery, completed in 1855, situated offshore just east of the isle of Grain in Kent, England. Standing in the mouth of the River Medway.
Similar to the older east coast Martello Towers having a slight taper towards the top.
Externally granite blocks make up the tower walls while inside the construction is of red fired brick.
Modifications began in 1910 with quick firing guns replacing the original cannons.
High speed torpedo boats from France were to be targeted by Grain Tower Battery as they were likely to be attacking ships moored at Sheerness or Chatham.
The Medway boom crossing to sheerness fort was attached to the Tower and formed as an anchor point. Remains of this can be seen wrapped around the tower.
Further modifications in the First World War and entire additions including a barracks, new guns with range directors and a searchlight position were added during the Second World War.
Join me and my good friends, Ian & Chris from IKS Exploration as we prepare to venture across the causeway to this magnificent abandonment.
This is part Three of a mini series with @IKS-Exploration at the Isle of Grain.

Thank you for the tour today. It’s a shame the condition is so bad. Disgusting what these vandals do to these properties. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, and see you on the next. Cheers Andy! 🇬🇧🙂👍🙂
Glad you enjoyed our latest adventure Martin, thanks so much :-)
Agreed, Martin, re the vandals' mindsets. No respect.

It was a really good day filming here.
Amazing video this mate went past this when I went to the seaforts
Yo Kurt, I believe on a clear day the sea forts you visited can be seen from the watch tower
@@ALWResearchTeam yea I heard that to dude
I looked but due to the heat (it’s when it was really hot last summer) there was a lot of haze at sea level. I could see something in that direction but couldn’t be sure. I’ll get out to those one day too
👍👍👍👊👊😛
This would have been nice to see when it was still in use, before the graffiti and vandalism. Thanks for showing us around!
Hello Phillip, I often think that when i visit places like this, or to explore it just after abandonment where its all intact. Thank you so much for watching and commenting
Doing a quick searh on Google rendered this bit of info on the layout, courtesy of the Jarrelook website:
"(...) the height of the Grain Tower Battery was raised and a platform was built on the top for two 4.7 inch breech loading guns to be mounted. (...) A centralised ammunition magazine was then created by reinforcing the middle of the tower, and a mechanised shell lift was installed to raise ammunition to the firing platform some 30 feet or so above. (...) This particular tower however appears to have been designated to ward off potential attack by fast E Boats and the like up the Medway. At this time the Grain Tower Battery had a director tower built behind the main gun emplacement and the old 4.7" guns were replaced with a twin 6 pounder, 10 cwt. QF (quick firing) coastal artillery gun installation. (...) Immediately to the right of the gun platform a search light platform was constructed and the remains of the swivels for both emplacements can still be clearly seen. The final part of the tower to be constructed was an extensive brick barrack block of three floors. It was not however a part of the tower proper but a completely separate construction on concrete stilts, connected to the main tower by two concrete walkways at the bottom and top levels respectively."
It's an incredible site. Sad thing it's not been listed, my guess is the cost of the rebuild and maintenance would be rather hefty.
Have a great weekend, Andy, Ian and Chris.
Cheers.
Edit for spelling and grammar.
Hello there :) yes that's the one indeed :)
We visit the WW2 barrack block in the next episode :)
