I do like the lawyer face-palming. 😁
Me too.. funny!!🤣
As a retired court clerk, I loved this run o She Hulk and laughed out loud many times. It is, however, no less realistic than, say, "My Cousin Vinny," These stories will never be realistic because in real life, most of the time, court cases are really, really boring. And to portray a real court case would take a movie of about 20 hours or a comic arc of 24 issues. So, just like in "Perry Mason" we suspend disbelief and never bring up the inaccuracies. It's still lots of fun. And my favorite was the one you showed in the introduction: Superman accused of murder, where he takes the jury back in time. That could be a video in itself. And it is done seriously, or as seriously as the Silver Age can do anything.
I resent the my cousin Vinny example. It’s deliberately only entertaining BECAUSE court in real life is boring and Vinny understands like none of the actual legal processes at this time. I think a better example would be the “trial” for Batman conducted by his rogues gallery in BTAS. Or like any trial from Harvey Birdman (actually Insane how WB didn’t make the new bird girl a straight copy of the courtroom and lawyer setup from Harvey Birdman but using more DC properties than Hanabarbera with the popularity of superheroes right now).
There actually is a basis for the idea that Jonah's anti-Spidey stance is at least partially motivated by profit. There's an issue where he's accused of that and he responds with, "If a crusade will sell papers then J. Jonah Jameson will have a crusade." But he DOES also have an anti-vigilante stance.
There have been multiple cues to the idea in various media. I tend to think that while he has an anti-vigilante(especially masked, for character reasons) stance, the fact he will put up other heroes at times while still going on about Spider-man is probably a combination of SPider-man continually insulting him, and the fact that his anti-spider rants do sell papers. What I am saying is that I don't think it is a single reason, but I do think He pushes it a bit more often, harder, and in situations he otherwise wouldn't because it sells, and has become a trademark of the bugle.
There have been multiple issues over the years where Jonah reveals why he hates Spider-Man, and most of them are different than all the rest. It's best to stick with the first one (written by Stan himself) where Jonah says to himself that Spidey risks his life every day for no money, while Jonah is only interested in making money, and that he can't respect himself while Spidey lives.
@@jhornacek Yeah, that really is such an interesting detail about him no one ever knows about unless they've read that issue. I remember a more recent issue right after the first Civil War where he said he was a huge fan of Cap and Bucky as a kid and that the event and manner in which Bucky died immediately coloured his position on young heroes in general.
@@IsiahTomas Another interesting idea is that Bucky's death is a big in universe reason why heroes don't have teen sidekicks..
I heard that in one of the versions of JJJ’s backstory it reveals a more complex and deep reason as to why he hates Spider-man. His dad was a war hero who everybody around him praised and loved for his service to his country but behind closed doors he was abusing his wife and son which caused JJJ to develop a deep seeded mistrust of heroes because he knows that behind their good natured exteriors there can be monsters hiding inside
There is an issue of Superman's girlfriend Lois Lane where Lois is accused of killing Lana Lang and Superman is the Prosecutor and Batman is her Defense Attorney.

This comment string is amazing
I think the lawyer side of She-Hulk is so under-appreciated and underdeveloped. If they wanted to do a lawyer story arc, they should've talked and consulted an actual lawyer Like Legal Eagle. And instead of having multiple trials, the entire run should be at MOST 1 or 2 trails. It should be a big deal, have long-lasting implications like fight superhuman registration acts, or suing evil cooperation like Oscorp. I know that this is blasphemy to say but the superhero part shouldn't be an interesting part of that character. Especially when the universe is over-populated with superheroes (a handful are lawyers too)
They should make a comic with her vs Daredevil on trail. With mind controlling characters like Professor X and Purple man could someone use I was mind controlled as a defense or are you still guilty because you did the thing and they would be an augment of you should have known better then to work with purple man hes a known criminal. You could have some legal uncertainty there

What if they were to get Viva Frei or someone to help them write a story about defending Tony Stark or some other guy?
Peter Parker: Spider-Man wasn't trying to attack the city, he was trying to save it. That's slander.
J. Jonah Jamison: It is not. I resent that. Slander is spoken. In print, it's libel.
Better hope Batman doesn't sue over that signal. I think he has the money to bury spidey

Actual Batman quote: "if I patented this device, I'd make a fortune. But then, I already have a fortune. That's how I was able to make it." Also, if there was a case, I don't think the Avengers have a device to verify his identity without unmasking. Patent rights don't translate well to other universes anyway. Just sayin'.
Peter isn't rich from the Webs book because Jonah ripped him off for it. Since Peter took the photos for the Bugle, the photos belonged to the Bugle. I can't help but think that was a little commentary about how Marvel treats their artists.
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the story due to not being legally accurate. I love it because it's a funny way to view the Spidey/Jonah relationship.
Oh well.
Depends on if he's a freelancer or not.

"John's here because he's the first person that spiderman ever saved. Because he sure didn't save uncle Ben!" ooooooohhhhhh you didn't
The one thing I remember from the newspaper strip when I was a kid was an arc where Jameson published something clearly actionable, and Spidey looking into suing him. His lawyer told him that to file a suit or take the stand he'd have to reveal his actual legal identity. Thus Stan Lee shut down any pestering questions from fans.
As for the suspension of disbelief...at some point creators are just playing volleyball without a net, or running with the basketball under their arm, or making a Star Trek movie. Even with comedy, if their not working with any actual rules, then they're not really solving any story problems, and I don't find it satisfying as storytelling.
When you said Dan Slott, I was like of course he would turn a She-Hulk issue into see how much I know about Spidey. When he wrote Spider-Man he was constantly flexing how much of Spidey's history he knows.
Like how he said that when he got to write Spidey solo (after working with multiple writers during Brand New Day) he was going to follow up on something in ASM #1 that no one had ever followed up on, and how he was going to do something unique with the character? Then he had Peter decide to become a scientist and get a job at a lab, which had already been done years earlier in the Mackie/Byrne reboot.
For all of Slott's claims about being Spidey's #1 fan and having notebooks full of story ideas and notes, his so-called Spidey knowledge is lacking at times. Like claiming that Betty Brant has a photographic memory in this issue - this has never been mentioned in any of her previous appearances, and there are multiple stories where she forgets something, which makes this claim of her having this skill make no sense.
@@jhornacek Lol. Hilarious considering Nick Spencer is actually pulling from more past stuff and doing something interesting with it. Writing a Spidey story is less about how much history you know and more bout how well you can write him. Also if Slott was actually the number 1 spidey fan and knew everything about spidey, he would have OKD retconning first on his agenda
@@doubleasworkshop1692 Spencer has done the impossible - he has gotten me to look forward to reading ASM again after 10 years of Slott issues where I'd buy the issue and it would sit unread on my desk for days because I had no interest in reading it. Not only is Spencer's run fun, but he has corrected so many of the mistakes done with Spidey not only done in Slott's run, but since One More Day. Unlike Slott, Spencer knows that Peter is a responsible person that doesn't shirk his responsibilities. Plus unlike Slott he can also write a competent and likable MJ.
Slott's claims that he is the #1 Spidey fan were soon disproven based on his stories. He is actually the #1 Doc Ock fan.

I am not sure if this counts, but I seem to remember reading a comic where The Beyonder(yes, THAT Beyonder) hired Nelson and Murdock to find a way for him to legally take over the world. He even paid them with gold he recovered from the ocean. He claimed it was legally his under international marine salvage law. If you're looking for more court comic stories: Who Killed Batman. Batman 291-294 and the best one is 293. The story is that Batman is dead and all the supervillains are claiming they killed him, so they hold a trial, listening to each villain's story to see who is guilty. Ra's is the judge and Two-Face is the prosecutor. There is a twist at the end, one you can definitely see coming but I'll still keep it a secret. This story also inspired the fan favorite episode of Batman Animated Series "Almost Got Him". But lets get to issue 293, the best one, where Lex Luthor kills both Batman and Superman in the most convoluted stupidest way possible and it's totally amazing. You should read it just for that. Love your stuff.

"This seems like a bit of a trial run" I see what you did there!
Slott's She-Hulk was fun and bounced between TV level court chaos and super action comedy. It used a lot of lesser known characters, added some nice new ones, and had a lot of meta-textual jokes. The law firm was a nod to the founding fathers of Marvel and used trades as court documents which was great.
Edit: Webs was late 80s iirc. It was mentioned back during the Inferno tie in book as something new and yes, it did give him a good boost of income for the time then. So even with time slide, Webs would be 3 years old or more by the time of the story so the money would have slowed a lot.
You know during trials when the jury is polled? I was on a court case, I was a juror, when one of the other jurors changed her mind during the jury polling. She began sobbing and the amount of the award went up. This was in Asheville, North Carolina.
I remember a time when Spidey was on a similar position as when he was asked how the court can know if he was the real deal and he did some acrobatics to prove it; the funny part, he was disguised as Daredevil but as the court was not able to prove otherwise the case had to continue assuming DD was his secret identity
Dan Slott is a great idea man. As terrible as his Spider-Man run became, some of his stories are good ideas. For example, Spider-Verse is a good idea - bring in some alternate universe Spideys, give them a common threat, it would be fun. But the story we got made no sense, was terrible, and included so many alternate Spideys that the real Spidey became a supporting character in his own story.
I agree with you that this story likely started from the "Because I'm black" line and he created the rest of the story to get there. This is a funny and pretty unoffensive Spidey story, so it works here. It was stories like this and his Spider-Man and Human Torch mini-series that got him the job writing Amazing Spider-Man. Unfortunately the readers quickly realized that Slott works better writing occasional Spidey stories instead of an continuing series.
The Spider-Mobile would be a great future video - how Marvel was asked to do it by a car company, how Gerry Conway thought it was a stupid idea, how quickly the vehicle was disposed of, and how it came back and tried to kill Spidey.
I've got this She-Hulk book. This was a fun story. I loved your voices for Spidey, Jonah, and Pug. 🙂
Lawsuits in fictional settings with fantastical elements are a lot of fun! I do wish they'd done a more serious take; maybe it should have been an Elseworlds story so ramifications from it can be ignored in the wider canon?
"Did you ever read a joke and get the impression that the rest of the story was structured around it?" Yes. In My Little Pony with the episode "28 Pranks Later". I wouldn't be surprised if the entire episode was written around the zombie movie parody during the final act because of the amount they needed to flanderize Rainbow Dash's insensitivity and love of pranks in order to justify the town's revenge prank.
That "Awooooo!" after John Jameson's testimony killed me.

Soules run is the one to read for accurate legal stories: he's a lawyer.
I loved that run!
Really good and fun with the occasional bit of seriousness. Big fan
Maybe the She-Hulk tv series will do a similar storyline.
I kinda remember seeing an interview with Todd McFarlane where he mentioned he once had a similar idea to the "Because I'm black." joke with Spidey. IIRC, Spidey breaks up a mugging, the victim uses some racial slur about the muggers, Spidey gets mad and says something like "What makes you think I'm not black?"
Sash sounds like she’s a lawyer or at least a paralegal
Eh- it was OK. John Byrne did a great job with the humor in his She Hulk run though
Can you cover hellcat a.k.a. patsy walker in some way? I ended up learning about the character through Jessica Jones and bought a couple of her comic books and loved her more. I feel like her comic books have the same humor of the female flash and gwenpool and a pretty good action level that most marvel comics have.
One interesting aspect is that she started out in romance comics and pre-dates almost every Marvel superhero (not the WW2 era of Cap, Sub Mariner, the original Human Torch ect).
Your right. This is so much a spidey story I remembered it a one. As to other court case comics only two come to mind, but I can't tell you which issue. Mary Jane on the jury of a crook whos defense is he was walking along when Spidey swung by, and heard cop sirens. Spidey then webbed him to a wall and stuck a bag of stolen money on him. And the Avengers. Gyrch is calling for legal sanctions against them. When news reports of a stone monster attacking the city interupts. Beast then breaks the leg off the defense table and hands it to Gyrich. Beast says you don't like how we do it? This monster is all yours.
This was actually one of my favourite stories when I was younger, I hope the show on Disney+ is this goofy :)

"Its cause Im black" That line is hysterical. I dont care who you are.
Its funny on so many levels. The obvious ones and the fact that Jonah would never even know that about him with the mask.
Now to show a different side of things with Spidey and Jameson, look up issue 6 of the recent "Spectacular Spider-Man" run.
Mark Twain has been quoted as saying “We laugh the hardest when we laugh at ourselves”. I think that is what this issue is about. Just a fun fantasy story in a medium that’s primarily fantasy. Not meant to be taken too seriously by fans. Much like the remake of the Green Lantern sells power rings story you reviewed recently. (I still think it would’ve been funnier if GL tried to “unmask” Grodd. That’s not a Gorilla, that’s a man ba-oops....) DC seemed to be enjoying a laugh at their own expense, and invited us along.
If you think about it, Spiderman could sue that weasily Parker kid for royalties from his book. Trying the case would be the Law Offices of Dewey, Cheatham and Howe, the same firm that represents Lois Lane every time she needs a divorce. But then what Super Villan would show up for that?
Still, I’d love to see a courtroom battle between Jennifer Walters and Matt Murdock. Or Jason Bard and Jean Lorring. But then nobody would have much fun...
How would that even work? Spider-Man and Peter Parker are the same person. Peter with the mask on is Spider-Man. Spidey without the mask is Peter Parker.
Well I wasn’t serious, but I’ll give it a few jabs.
1. His Lawyers hire the shapeshifter to impersonate Parker. You know, the one who was disguised, ironically, as the man with no name. But then he’d have to explain that he’s a Clint Eastwood or Back to the Future enthusiast.
2. Peter goes it alone. Due to giving multiple testimonies/depositions, and lack of time, he forgets his Spider suit during the third or fourth quick change, showing up in only his mask and web shooters. The Judge throws the case out for lewd behavior in public. J.Jonah Jameson can’t stop laughing. Matt Murdock has no idea what’s happening, and Sue Storm the Invisible Girl cannot be reached for comment.
There. Absurd enough for ya?
3:14 - Spidey that last one was beneath you and you should be ashamed of yourself.
The “Webs” book was a thing when I was a kid reading Spider-Man. It was “Marvels” before “Marvels.” It did provide a nice source of income for Peter. :)

The "Webs" photo book was a great ongoing background story in the late 80's Spider-Man comics.
