I was a little shocked at how low the Dyno numbers turned out after the engine upgrades .still a cool project
Under 300 horse, and they dump nitrous in it? SMH...
@@digschopper9321 yeah but look at the smoke in the room from the breathers and behind it. I'm thinking they might have hurt it a bit.
Gotta remember that that’s at the wheels, so the number at the crank is probably a little more impressive
@@evi1dav3 i know, im a little surprised too... just goes to show us how important compression ratio is, the new heads may have lowered the already low compression ratio... the 1970 had what is a nominal 10 to 1 compression ratio nowadays as many turbo charged cars have higher than 10 to 1 now
Not to mention it took what? Like another month or so to release this..
I was expecting at least 500BHP and 500FtLb from that 500CI Caddy.
I didn't see how they built the motor. They said in this video, that they put go fast goodies in it. Looks like they bought the cheap go fast goodies. A pony per cube is not an unreasonable ask at all. And that's a naturally aspirated benchmark. Throw in some happy gas and it should be well north of 500 IMO. I don't remember who did it I believe in the 50's. Think it was a Chevy 283 that had one pony per cube.
A STOCK 70 500 cid had 400 hp and 525 ft......
a stock 426 from the late 60's - early 70's had 500 hp
@Allen Tokyo yes they did. they were advertised with lower hp numbers to keep the insurance costs down.
@Allen Tokyo The Hemi's stock rating wasn't its peak horsepower only the horsepower at that rpm, 425hp@5000rpm, 494hp@5950rpm, same as Chev did with the LS6, they rated it 450hp at a lower rpm when actual was just over 500hp at a higher rpm. Mopars 340 six pack was rated at 290hp when actual was 356hp and with a set of headers jumped to 376hp. Manufacturer ratings were purposely low for government and insurance reasons.
I feel like a bottom end rebuild would have been a big help, those breathers are huffing pretty good
I love the dynamic these two have with each other.
500 ci with heads, cam, intake and headers only making mid-200's NA? I can understand in the motor's original restricted state back in the 70-80's gas crisis era, but free'd up with some modern day parts that seems awfully low, no?
yeah with a lot of their builds they say it’s “budget friendly” so they’ll reuse some parts, but they always use the garbage parts that should have been thrown away, and they ended up spending MORE than they should have
500 Caddy was not designed to be performance motor, like the big block Chevy, or even the big block BOPs. It's quite limited by low RPM valve train, small valves and decidedly non-performance heads. Here, they didn't touch the pistons (i.e. still very low compression ratio, plus there's bound to be some blow-by) and a cam only slightly larger than stock (peak power at ~4500 RPM) is never going to make a bunch of power. Stock, this motor had ~150 rwhp, so the bump to 250 rwhp is 67%, which is excellent. Factor in losses and this build pretty much duplicates the MY1970 400 hp 500, so not too shabby all in all.

I agree, over all its pretty impressive, plus it's something you could use as a daily driver if you wanted to.
I have a 76 coupe deville it was rated at 190, horsepower and 350 torque so they did a pretty good job. I really like the sound of the Q-Jet at wide open throttle (with the air cleaner lid up side down )
I'm curious what a good set of heads would have done.
Motor is hurt, you can hear it clearly.
That was def. the A team of good ol boys of hot roding.
Keepemcoming
Y'all need to do a Pitty build my old Demon, you can throw all the Ad stickers you want it haha
Caddy was fun, but I was really appreciative of seeing how the Muncie shift linkages went back together.
Yeah. I was hoping for a bit more but still a cool project.
And they did shave 2 seconds off in the 1/8th which is like 3 seconds in the quarter. I think it needs a little more cam and a little more sauce though... :)
Love the exhaust note though.
A #2 screw driver or most random push rod fit tighter and I know cuz I have a 68 Pontiac and it had way to high of gearing so my foot that diff and I was always doing the cluch

I'm not surprised that the power numbers are kinda low. My friend had a 76 Eldorado with the 500 CID that he tried to turn into a sleeper. He couldn't get it to do what he was expecting it to do,it was a dog. I think he expected it to have alot more power than it ended up with. Eventually he gave up on the Caddy engine and dropped in a mildly Hot Rodded Olds Rocket 455 out of a 70 Vista Cruiser. That engine motivated the Eldorado much better than the Cadillac. I made and welded in the engine mounts. His father used to be really into Oldsmobile cars, and he was part owner of a wrecking yard from 1974 to 1997ish. They had all kinds of cool stuff laying around/ available.
I have to admit this is an awesome build. I just wish the old crew was together and you were on Saturday mornings again!
That old low compression 500 would've loved some boost. Imagine the look of an 8-71 sticking out of that hood?!
Such a fun build. Thank you for thinking out of the box.
Nice ride. Was waiting to see this episode. I' am a big fan.👍👍👍
Back in the early 90s my buddy had a Malibu wagon with a bone stock Cadillac 500 and a NOS system 250 shot and it ran in the 10s....with great wheel stands at the starting line....lol. oh yeah that's in the 1/4.
Thanks for the show guy love that Cadillac .
God I love this build I've wanted a hearse since I was like 12
All that work, and it's basically back where they were Pre-Emissions?
FFS, 500 cubes, with a modern cam, decent flowing heads, and a basic multipoint injections system, Should be in the 400hp and 500ft/lb range before the NOs hits.
I mean, even without all that modern stuff. A 1976 590 built to factory spec has 397 HP and 488 TQ. These guys just downgraded to 425 heads for some reason, making a "performance build" that actually had less power than stock. The heads don't even line up either, which is why we all watched it blow up at the track the first time they came out to film this (hence the 90 day delay for a reshoot and the "redemption" arc because we all laughed at them.)
Was expecting 500 wheel. But kool build never the less. 🕶
I think Pat needs one or two more pens in his shirt pocket.... 😂
Pat is the proto boomer
That thing needs to be in the Next Phantasm movie.
Tommy look n mighty relaxed behind the wheel. Think he’s done this before. 🇺🇸
It's alive 🤯🤯🤯that engine sounds good and angry I like it 👍👍👍👍that's a sweet sounding engine nice work 👍👍more power the better
The Grim Reaper is grinning with this omen. Nice job guys
Y’all are a great combo!!
awesome video every build car should have this
I had a stock 500 dropped into a lighter 78 caddy with 425 heads and it hauled ass. I was not surprises how fast this hearse ran!
So cool!! I like seeing it from the outside LOL
OMG THAT was Beautiful to see ha ha ha Loved it! got my fav car flying, and in a HEARSE!!
There's nothing cooler than a hot hearse, I've always liked the idea of owning one myself, very cool, very impressive, Rj in Oz
That ought to do it. Thanks very much, Ray.
Should have gotten the rear with 4.10's or even deeper with that heavy boat.
4:56:1. Or. 5:19:1 would be wild and some really tall slicks..
Ya can't over rev a Caddy...it's all done by 4500.
@@pookysdad4884 not with ported heads and a bigger cam. If it was stock then I would agree with you.
Especially if they're running the 1/8-mile with it.
Love the show guys
I agree!!
He said "I'm sure this thing hasn't even seen these sort of RPM's." I laughed hard. I guess he wasn't a teenager in a family of small town morticians. First time I drove something 120+ it was 1971 Pontiac Hearse.
What a dog! 🐕😕
I like this video, seen the first 1, good build...
That was killer!
I think y'all should call out #FarmTruck&Azn with there Caddy Hurse! I think that would make a good race and a show.
The update was a long-time coming be what a cool hearse
500 cubes and only 250bhp? Jeez. You can get that out of a 1600cc MX5
Yeah, but put that 1.6 into a 6400 pound hearse and see how it goes.. There are different kinds of power.
But not the torque.
My dad had a new '76 Caddy Eldorado with FI. According to Caddy from 190hp the FI output was 215hp & torque was 400. I was not impressed when the 1st dyno was sooo low w/o the juice. Should've returned it to 1970 specs.
I like the idea of having the purge tubes on the back bumper, to let tailgaters get a whiff of Sulfur Dioxide.
Very cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
There's no reason why a 500 shouldn't put out 400 hp before squeeze. Sad.
Gotta remember that this is at the wheels, and while it still not great it’s a little better than it might seem
That's what I was thinking. 70 caddy 500 is rated 400hp at the crank with no accessories installed.
250 NA at the wheels is maybe 300 at the crank. I agree, I think there's more in it, but who knows what the bottom end is like. You can see some blowby on the dyno pulls.
Needs more cam IMO... :) Or more N2O
Not on a chassis dyno.
@@pookysdad4884 drivetrain takes about 20% give or take, so you can ballpark numbers. 400 at the crank would be around 325 at the wheels. 400 at the wheels would be almost 500 at the crank and probably too much for the stock bottom.
Best build ever
With the low static CR on those engines, you really really really needed to either stroke it and bump the CR, or add some boost.
I like this duo..
Guitar solo from Rush "Red Barchetta". Well done Post.
Did you see the caddy Hurse race at rocky mountain race week in Colorado
I would of like to see this with 800hp
This thing would be a cool cruiser with tall gears and an overdrive transmission, forget about bracket racing it, unless you travel back to the future and call Cadillac performance depot or whatever that company was that swore by these motors! They use to make 1000 hp from 472/500 cids, but I guess that is possible when you change everything!
All-ways like the mid to late '70's caddy hearse...
I’m disappointed that you guys haven’t addressed the RPM act. You have one of the biggest platforms. It’s your duty to keep people aware. Especially when it will completely effect YOU! Do you think your going to have sponsors or even viewers if nobody is allowed to touch a car with a vin? Nope.
Reading spark plugs, this guy's got the basics down, not bad for a rookie, he should have done an advanced tutorial
I need to go back and see what you did to the engine. I was pretty disappointed by the NA output. For a heads/cam/intake 500" big block engine, that's not a big improvement.
~200hp stock. Add 5 axis cnc ported big valve heads, shaft roller rockers, bigger cam, and aluminum intake and she only makes 238hp at the wheels? In the initial video, you claimed 1hp/cube and over 700lb/ft. That would be cool. This is very underwhelming.
czcams.com/video/pJPfuH_N3X4/video.html
They put out less power than this engine had stock. The problem with their build is they used 425 heads which not only have crap compression, they have absolutely TERRIBLE airflow. Even worse, they don't even line up with the 500 block, so when they came out to the track to film this episode the first time, the whole engine blew immediately. So they quickly rebuilt it to refill it a second time (hence the 90 day delay between episodes and the "redemption" arc where they keep talking about "redeeming themselves" now.)
I'd love to have that old caddy. My mom had a deville with that engine. Reminds me of her. Herse or not...
Hey powernation when are we going to see the turbo ford 300 i6? I know of thousands of people waiting for this. Those motors have a cult following and im part of it
I remember those being kind of gutless in the pick ups. The bottom torque was good, but hp wasnt.
@@kevinshiley9061 it was nothing but gutless. But they have some potential and they are something different. Not an LS or a 12 valve cummins so I can get behind it
I second the request for the turbo 300
@@donaldrobertson8463 part of the cult?
@@billyblock3541 potential is maxed out at what a mild LS or late model Hemi or Coyote build is. All for 2x the cost. In the performance world the Ford Flathead V8 is more relevant that the I6. And the flattie has not been in the engine lineup for over 50 years.
10:13 They were rated at 400hp in 1970 before they put low compression pistons in it (8.5 vs 10.25) Makes you wonder if these 200hp versions are just a piston swap away from making 400hp when freshened up.
Go get ya one. It's only about 8k to do that. Been there done that.
8:47, DID HE SAY WHAT I THINK HE SAID?!!!
I think he did...I heard it too and came back to see if anyone else heard what I heard.
Boshers and Boshears. Nice combo
Good numbers to the wheels. It propably losts some 100hp in gearboxand powertrain?
Love the video especially the transmission work at the end. A question though, what if you have a top loader 4 spd that has banging in 2 gear?
I'm shocked it ran in the 9s. Thats insane
That was a 1/8 mile run.
Pat T always has at least 10 pens in his shirt pocket protector.
The only pocket protector in the pocket should be a Colt Mustang or Sig p238 in 380 acp
Richard Holdner is shaking his head in disapproval...
LOL
In my saved items, I have a video of our SBC powered Caddy hearse, doing a burnout as my son leaves a car show at a local paved track. Wish I knew how to send it to you. I work off of my phone.
We all got a smile.
Not I'm pressed with the NA power. That's a lot of motor. Should have made way more grunt.
Agreed. Would have done better with rings and bearings and degreeing the stock cam to compensate for how retarded the factory made it. Then the proper block deck and gasket mods for 425 heads on the 500 block.
Those two cheap and cheerful things would have netted them more grunt than the cam did, because those old rings were tired even before the old cardinal rule of never put fresh vslve job atop wasted rings was broken.
You all seriously need to have the paint and body guys do a about a 5" chop on the top of that thing and it would look sick
So the lesson here is that if you want a fast Cadillac Casket Hauler you’re gonna have to drop in a LS motor and take a torch to that 500 and fashion a boat anchor out of it to sell on eBay to fund the project
I was thinking that the HP w/o nitrous would have been significantly higher than stock. I must be missing something.
I’m assuming those were 1/8th mile times?
When I die that's the Hurst I want to ride in... that way I can get there in a hurry😂😂👍👍👍😂😂👍👍👍
Finally!!!!
This seems like a bit of a disservice to the 500 Caddy. Every other dyno test or build of a 500 that I’ve ever seen has been pretty impressive up until this. I would have to figure out what was going wrong if I got these results. Worn parts, bad combination, or both.
Now you just gotta gut the interior, build an all new 500 with a blower, 4link the rear end and throw in some 4:11 gears and let er rip!!!😂😂😂
It’s not fast but it’s badass😎😎😎😎😎😎😎 great job
Time to put a roots blower on this beast!
Only 250HP with 500ci? That's really sad.
I wonder the front would look without the middle part of the bumper... huge grill with bumperettes.
“THUNDERTAKER”.
Could have "seen the light at the end of the tunnel " with some green LEDs all around.
You should build a sled pulling truck from parts all from the junk yard
I had a 1970 Cadillac Eldorado that had 400HP 500 stock
HP per Ci is embarrassing. I wouldn't be bragging about it.
Yes sir
Hey, I was born on Friday the 13th and my lucky racing number has always been 13 too!
Should have givin it to the local scrap yard. I just creeps me out!
You gotta Race farm truck and AZN’s hearse now !!!!
Is it me or is there a lot of smoke coming out of the breathers and behind it after the big nitrous pull? Wondering if they might have done some damage.
Seems to have a sealing issue with the pistons. Rings are probably done and the low compression seems to not like the nitrous too well
I know They're not powerhouses by any means, but it's kind of sad you can make that little power from such a massive engine.
Remember, that horse power at the rear wheels with an engine that has all of the accessories on it. Add about 100 hp to that figure for an engine dyno with no accessories. It was still low, I've seen them put out quite a bit, forced induction would make a big difference.
@@kevinshiley9061 not 100hp, maybe 40-50. They use garbage parts on all their cars, most of which don't usually play well together.
@@johnnyblue1540 just relating what guys like Richard Holderness have said. When they run on the engine dyno, they have long big tube headers,, and no accessories, no transmission , ect. When they use a Chassis dyno, you are going through the slush box, driving the PS, alternator, water pump and maybe
A/C in the Caddy. Plus parasitic power loss through the drive train, and usually a smaller set of headers. It adds up fast!!
If that had been 1/4 mi times instead of 1/8 mi, u would have really had a world record holder...
Twin Turbo and Haltech it! Call Turbo Yoda!!!
Were these times 1/8 mile times?!?! I can’t imagine this two ton boat cracked into the 10’s N/A on a 1/4 miles strip…
What would be the quarter mile time give or take?
Who's this Daniel guy he's pretty cool
That's not bad
Why even open the motor at all with those rookie numbers.
I like the hearse 🤤
Definitely thinking naturally aspirated would bring in high 300 hp? And then with the boost, maybe 500? Then again, that was useable hp at the rear tires. Take that engine out again, give her a lower massage and maybe increase compression with some new pistons? I would love to see what that old hearse would do with 750 useable hp at the rear tires...
Motor was hurt, rings were toast there was a lot of blow by coming from valve cover vent when on the dyno
