    As a Gospel Doctrine and Early Morning Seminary teacher I was fond of saying that if you wanted to really understand the Book of Mormon that you needed to read and reread the Old Testament. This discussion has given me even more conviction that that statement is spot on. Thank you!

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! Interestingly, Joseph Smith was drawn to language, but not the classical languages of Greek and Latin, but to Hebrew, the language of the OT, and of course to Egyptian.

    Really enjoyed the content of this episode. I’m picking up his book and will be reading it soon. There is one thing I’d like to point out. You suggested that the seal enclosing the sealed portion of the
    Jaredite record was similar to the Aztec calendar. The Aztec borrowed its calendar from the Mayans who borrowed it from the Olmecs. The funny thing is the Olmec civilization’s rise and fall time period coincides quite nicely with that of the Jeredite civilization. Food for thought.

    There is a definite parallel between David and Goliath and Nephi and Laban. Also between the swords of the same.
    Joseph Smith used two sets of plates: the golden plates and the small plates of Nephi. This accounts for differences in the descriptions of the size of the plates.

  • @mroberts7117
    @mroberts7117 Před rokem +1

    Thanks for the video. I am reading the book now.
    Thoughts to this point:
    - Martin Harris: the character sketch in this book seems to say he was almost giddy to over exuberance to share what he was learning. How many of us react the same, and then miss out on deeper points and meanings that might have been received if things had been 'held closer to the vest' and waited for God's timing on the reveal of something and on the completion of the lesson being given?
    Also a comparison between Martin Harris and Amulek: both were supporters of the prophet, both were ostracized to some level by their families and community, both were blessed by God in the end but had some repenting to do in the process.
    - Plates: Did Moriancumer make plates, or was his original record of some other method? Did Ether draw on this tradition from his culture? Was he a custodian for plates of the people of Jared? The plates that he left and were found by the people of Limhi, were they sealed unto God, and thus passed in the same pattern as discussed from Moroni to God to Joseph Smith?
    Presuming Joseph son of Jacob is the source of the brass plates, where did he get the idea of plates?
    Were they a common tool, post Noah? {Wayne May talks much of the Adena culture's abilities with metal working.}
    - The sword and the plates: could it be said that the sword was passed down as a token of and protective tool for the custodian of the brass plates? Then when Nephi received this position he added more plates, both large and small, each custodian adding to the plates, and this collection and sword passed on until it came to Mormon, and then Moroni? Then to Joseph Smith, with Moroni still acting in the background? (re. the story's of the repository in Cumorah, and the two times the sword was seen there.)
    - Contents and message of the lost pages: Reading through the book so far, it seems to me that the contents of the lost pages/first section of Mormon's plates are about a rebuilding of A nation of covenant Israel, 'patterned after the old one.' As such, while still important, it is of lesser value today compared to the rest the book. IE: Mormon's narrative of establishing a good republic; dealing with secret combinations seeking for power; surviving the collapse of society prior to the coming of Jesus Christ; the witness and record of Jesus' ministry and aftermath; Mormon's own dealing with a collapsing society. Add Moroni's recital of the Jaredite society's struggles with the same issues, and his notes on establishing the church. Then add the replacement section that is by Nephi's admission more focused on the Witness of Christ as the messiah and Lamb of God, and his Gospel and gathering of covenant Israel, than on the history. (Relating this to the above, IMO the small plates could be considered a worthy addition to the brass plates in their scriptural value.)
    Do not take this as a dismissal of what is missing, but rather an acknowledging of the wisdom of God in preparing a record, that I personally expect will be eventually (after the second coming) released in full to the world at large, that is until then to prepare a people for the time they live in.

There is so much evidence of the Book of Mormon people here in North America. I have gone too see some of the places and artifacts. They are called the lost civilization. ( Jaredites- are the Adena culture and Nephites and Lamanites are Hopewell culture) they line right up with the Book of Mormon.

      @James Wines You need to study the Bible and history more. This was the first of Nebudchanezer's captivity excursions. This is likely where Daniel and Ezekiel were taken. But it was mostly the nobles and those of the King's Court. It wasn't until later, in 587 BC that Babylon returned to destroy Jerusalem and take a large majority of the Jews captive to Babylon.

    I think it interesting that due to Lehi's ancestry it is assumed that all his posterity are Manasseh...i imagine that his surprise at being a descendant of Manasseh indicates that he has multiple lineages...his maternal and paternal. We know that the israelites in general intermarried and so it is likely that he and his posterity would have traits from all of the tribes... possibly some sons inheriting certain traits beyond other sons.

    I am currently in the midst of a faith crisis and am confused by some of the misrepresentations by the leaders of the LDS church. Steel did not exist during the time Lehi's descendants were in the new world so how is it that Joseph that was sold into Egypt could have had a steel sword centuries before steel existed. Seems implausible to me that this could exist. Also if the records on the brass plates was so vital to the Israelites that they had them written on brass plates why after they discovered that they had been stolen would they not have had someone create another record to be committed to brass plates? Also based on contemporary evidence found regarding writing on plates the brass plates would have to have been over 1200 pages. That seems highly suspect to me as it seems like just the weight on the plates would have destroyed the etchings on the plates. Please help me to understand what I am missing. Thank you.

    • @CwicShow
      @CwicShow  Před 2 lety +14

      "Steel did not exist during the time Lehi's descendants were in the new world so how is it that Joseph that was sold into Egypt could have had a steel sword centuries before steel existed. Seems implausible to me that this could exist."
      What does steel mean to Joseph Smith? In any history book, you can find numerous examples of words that are used to represent an object, a philosophy, an idea, a building, whatever it is. When you focus on the "material" of the scriptures which are historical, spiritual writings, you will easily stumble if you think that the words have to be exactly what you think they are in the 21st century Western civilization. An example of this is "brass". Most of the time "brass" is used in the Old Testament, they are actually talking about bronze or even copper. This is the same idea.
      "Also if the records on the brass plates was so vital to the Israelites that they had them written on brass plates why after they discovered that they had been stolen would they not have had someone create another record to be committed to brass plates? "
      How do you know they weren't? However, based on this scholar's theory, these would have been Joseph's actual record. There would unlikely be a second. However, there are numerous examples now of scriptures engraved on metal. The Copper Scroll from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Silver Scroll from the time of Lehi. This used to be an argument against the Brass Plates and the Gold plates. No longer the case.
      "Also based on contemporary evidence found regarding writing on plates the brass plates would have to have been over 1200 pages. That seems highly suspect to me as it seems like just the weight on the plates would have destroyed the etchings on the plates. Please help me to understand what I am missing. Thank you."
      This is not the case. The Israelites wrote incredibly small and their smiths were highly skilled in creating very thin "pages". We know this from numerous archeological finds. Also, the Brass Plates were written in Egyptian, reducing the space needed.
      I went through a small faith crisis twenty years ago. I also started focusing on these "material" things. I would recommend that you look higher in your criticism by looking at what we actually have. The Book of Mormon is incredible. The doctrine of the Church is monumental. There will always be new "material" criticism. It will never go away. But the truths of the Restored Gospel are eternal. Good luck!

      You should take a look. The book does not 'claim' to know what was in them. But it does some important textual and historical work and research that helps us to understand the Book of Mormon more thoroughly.
      Remember that Martin Harris was a very big part of the early days of the church. He was very faithful and risked everything for Joseph Smith including his wealth and even his marriage.
      He is also almost exclusively, the scribe for Joseph on those lost 116 pages.

    The first thing I learned in Institute Class is do not speculate. Speculation leads to apostasy. The Holy Spirit will guide your thoughts, ask Him. It takes us a life time to glean the Book of Mormon even Prophets have told us they learn new things every time they go through it. Me too, found at age 21 and forty six years continuous reading the most important record specifically for our time. It sure is! We did not pay attention though as President Benson told us. Use the Spirit to piece those parts together so we rely on The Father.
