My brother was going to college at Texas A&M, when Willie had a concert there. After the concert, my brother and some friends followed Willie and band to the small airport, to try to get autographs. Willie signed for them, but before they could leave, maintenance came out to tell Willie that there was a small problem with the plane, and the flight would be delayed. Willie turned to my brother and friends, and asked if they wanted to hang out for a while. They hung out, drank some beer, and listened to Willie tell stories for about 2 hours. They already loved Willie the singer, but they say he is the nicest person ever.

I live in Louisiana and Willie passes through this state a lot. True story. Never heard him say an unkind remark. I’ve seen him just smile and go silent, though. Love the Outlaw. And in this video he’s sitting next to another treasure and outlaw, Kris Kristofferson. In his heyday, I had two friends who had a son. Both wanted to name it Chris, but he wanted to spell it Kris and she, Chris. Almost got a divorce over it before they brought the boy home from the hospital. True story.
in the late 90s he played a small venue with a huge lineup where i was the lighting director. after the show, his manager invited me and the house and stage sound guys onto his bus and he smoked us out and thanked *_us_* for our work. the cat is a saint in my book.
I've always considered Willie Nelson to be his own genre.

Willie Nelson's guitar sound is just as distinctive as his singing voice. Flatpicking on amplified nylon strings produces such a wide fat-ass tone that it's hard to fathom why he's the only one doing it, and his wild personal masterful phrasing is impossible to describe. I can hear him play 3 notes & immediately go 'Hey, that's Willie!" and I can only name maybe 2 or 3 other guitar players whose tones I could recognize so quick.
Trigger is a Martin N20 classical guitar.
Willie was sitting right in the middle of a bunch of legends, and you can see how they were mesmerized by Willie...
They know the real deal when they hear it.
Willie is a legend himself,for good reason.

I interviewed Willie a couple of times back when I was a country-and-western DJ. He is perfectly genuine, and one of the nicest people I've ever met. He should be declared a national monument.

I totally agree - most of the analysis videos are superbly done!! And this being one of my favorite artists makes this video even more special. I love this song and it is probably one of the nicest "acoustic" versions of any song out there. Willie has an ability to voice Trigger exactly how he wants to, and his vocals may not be the greatest, but his ability to tell the story is a dying art - and he is a master at it!!
The visible spectators are all legends in their own right.

Indeed...this segment is part of a series of Country's Family Reunion.I found Part 2, which is 2 1/2 hours long but the sound quality is not great; most likely uploaded "unapproved" but bypassing the copyright laws by mixing up the sound..Many people will upload programs & do stuff to mask these laws..however, looking on youtube the many performances are broke down into single performances; which loses the whole vibe, stories, tears you witness & feel if you were to watch it at one setting.
Willie Nelson, along with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson formed the Highwaymen. One of the two best 'supergroups' ever assembled, the other being the Traveling Wilburys, with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. Awesome!

Peter I had a close-up seat for a Highwaymen concert (June Carter was sitting in front of me !) There was a section of the concert where each guy did a solo of one of his hits. Willie did You Were Always on my Mind. Johnny just watched him in obvious awe & reverence, while the other 2 guys drank water or smoked. A most memorable concert for me

Willie tells a great story about when he was touring with Ray Charles.
To unwind after the first show Ray invited Willie up to his room to play chess.
Within thirty minutes Ray had Willie on the ropes & checkmate only two moves away.
However, as Willie was a gracious loser but a fierce competitor he asked for a rematch the next evening.
Ray Charles, ever the gentleman, agreed.
Willie said fine. “ but tomorrow’s nights game we’ll turn the lights on !!!

This man is truly unique in everything he does. Waylon always claimed that he always did things his own way, but Willie really did exactly that.
He was a lowly studio musician playing on other people's tracks. Then he wrote some of the greatest country western songs ever for other artists. Finally, he had his own breakthrough and now his name is synonymous with American music. His story is one of talent, humility, and persistence.

The unmistakable sound of Willie picking "Trigger". Often imitated, but never duplicated.
"Trigger" (which he later nicknamed after Roy Rogers's horse) first appeared on his 1969 album, My Own Peculiar Way, but as the album was produced by Chet Atkins, it featured the "Nashville Sound" consisting of strings and backing singers so we hardly got to hear it there.

...I've watched this video no less than 50 times...the look on Kris Kristofferson's face when Willie sang " how's your new love " ...these guys have been there and done it ...felt and seen it all ....thx again Fil for ur breakdown and respect for these videos 👍
Mark C...Yes, Kristofferson's eyes, and the eyes of the other artist, were closed and that's when you know that they are listening with their heart.
Willie wrote "Crazy" specifically for Patsy Cline. She hated it but her husband talked her into recording it. She did it in 1 take. Thank God for both! ✌️♥️
He also wrote "Hello Walls" for Faron Young.
There will only be one Willie! The analysis given was spot on, I'm glad he mentioned that Willie was using classical nylon strings witch gives Willie his distinct sound. Being from Texas I love Willie Nelson. There's a lot of country music legends sitting in that circle!!

I discovered this track a few years ago and it blew my mind what he was doing with a 3 chord ballad. The passing chords, the voicings, the chromatic runs, and the Jango-esque solo...everyone in the room seemed stunned.

Did anyone else notice the all-star audience? Porter Wagner, Kris Kristopherson, Roy Clark, and I believe that Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, Merle Haggard, and countless other country music icons were there that day and they took turns performing and appreciating the abundance of talent present.

I remember hearing that some of his friends (Waylon Jennings and other big name artists) bought some of his possessions that the IRS was auctioning, and gave them back to him.

I've only seen him once in person. It was a smaller venue and there were only a few of the normal guys up there with him. It's amazing how one guy and his guitar (at almost 90) can still hold his own with all the young punks who have flashing lights, fireworks, and all sorts of digital effects. It goes to show you just how talented he is at writing songs, singing and playing, and making it all come together. And to be sitting there in the middle of all of that huge talent and still be able to get head nods, closed eyes and acknowledgment for his storytelling and delivery. That says magnitudes!!
When you think of the beauty and joy Willie has given to this world... he is truly an actual treasure that can't be measured by any other standard.
Just try to imagine all of the decades of memories with "Trigger' ; that Willie must have ... Willie & Trigger ARE Texas ...

Willie Nelson is a singer-songwriter with few equals, one of country’s greatest and a gift to music. To top off his already remarkable musical talents, he’s a damn good actor.
Willie was one of the founding fathers of the Outlaw Country movement -- a group of country musicians who rejected Nashville and everything it represented. He moved to Nashville as a young man and quickly made a name for himself as a very successful song writer. But along the way, he became deeply disillusioned with Nashville and all of its trappings -- overproduced sound, manipulative record companies, untrustworthy producers, internal politics everywhere. He absolutely hated the place. He packed his bags and went back to Austin and became a legend.

Willie really is one of a kind. One of the (many) things that sets him apart is that, even though he's one of the best songwriters ever, he's completely comfortable playing great songs by other writers. He's also comfortable singing with other singers (some of whom are not country artists) who are often better technically than he is. It's always about the music, not his ego.
In answer to many reviews, yep, Willie for all his fame hasn’t allowed himself to be tainted. He’s just a a guy who sings a song and happened to be blessed with a talent that most will never know. My heart goes out to you, Willie, for the decades that you have made me laugh, smile, desire, and cry...your songs have touched the lives of millions and I am so thankful that I have been one to experience not only your talents but the simple, honest person who you are. May God bless you.

I like the way w willie t throws in a note here and there that at first doesn't sound right but then slides it and leads into a chord change and walks the lead back in and hits you with what's not expected
A friend of mine used to roadie for Willie and he said Willie loves his weed. And he was VERY generous with whomever wanted some. And it was kind of an unspoken requirement that he preferred his roadies to smoke weed rather than drink alcohol. And he never played any other guitar other than "Trigger". Always loved Willie. I've seen Willie live 3 times. The first was in a stadium seating setting. At one point in the show, the band left the stage, he and his sister (piano player) were the only ones left and they blew the freaking roof off with an all-out instrumental, his guitar and her piano. One of my most inspiring guitar players because of the way he played it. Nobody does what he does.

I play guitar and performed live for over 10 years. And I've seen hundreds of live performances, but I have never seen anything in my life that compares to the feeling in this guitar work. It's astounding to me. Billy Joe Shaver looks like either his heart is breaking or he's going to kill someone...........

The man to Willies left Chris Christopherson most people will recognize as an actor, but did you know he started as a musician and a song writer. Willie has the most unique guitar playing style I have ever heard or seen. I don't think there is anyone who can play like Willie.

Pamela Raffel A computer Nerd ! Well , well . I knew he liked playing golf on his own course {Austin mayby }. I have only seen him/them twice . Back in '83 or 4 and 2006 ? But im up in Canada and i dont think he puts Snow tires on his Bus much so dont much get the chance ! But i did run into his Harp player , Mickey and getar player Jody Payne once while snappin pics of his Bus ! Too Cool . What state do you catch them in ? Yup i caught the A.B. s back in 1989 in Maine , only i think it was chilled Southern Comfort on the menu that day , It was Cool tho Because Dickey was there , Warren Haynes ,Allen ,{Woody }, Woody --- who was the last good bass player they had since Richard Oakley , {original} Greg , Butch n Jaimoe . We were on the coast and it Rained Barrels , the rain was bouncing a foot off the top of Gregs Hammond organ and the boys never missed a Beat . Great Show ! Yup ! So from the Great White North {used to be whiter . {. But now with global warming !! }, . . ,have a Merry Christmas .!

Willie is a person who always keeps it real both musically and in lifestyle. It shows in his music that comes across so authentically and from the heart. Although not a big fan of this style of music, I can't help but to listen and enjoy. Willie is a great entertainer that's been playing and writing feel good music for many decades, for that he deserves his legendary status.

One year I was on vacation in Las Vegas.

Thanks for sharing this superb video. Willie Nelson is the Frank Sinatra of country singers, the Django Rinehart of country guitar players and the William Shakespeare of country songwriters. And his faithful guitar Trigger is a legend in its own right.
According to one of Willies biographies he wrote three songs on the same day during a bus ride between two cities. The songs were Crazy, Night Life and Funny How Time Slips Away. All became major hits for other singers because at that time Willie was considered a songwriter not a performer. Eventually though he recorded the definitive version of each song. As he says It took me 25 years to become an overnight success.

Legends listening to legends. These guys were so close. A lot closer knit than they are today. You don't see this in today's Country.
He IS a country and pop legend kiddies. He came before me as a country singer and wrote many songs in for many singers and as time past he even broke into the pop scene. He has one lung but it never stoped his singing.😊
I remember back in the early 60’s, my Mom, sisters and me were out doing Saturday errands. My Mom just had to go to the record store to get this album by a new country singer named Willie Nelson. We said “who”? When she handed me the album, I looked at this, to me, homely looking man, with a flat top haircut, on the cover. Good album. Can’t find a pic of it online.

From Ray Price, Chet Atkins, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Skeeter Davis, Johnny Mathis, Elvis, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Theresa Brewer, Louie Prima & Keely Smith, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Mitch Miller, Marty Robbins…etc.
I could go on, but won’t😉 I learned to love many genres of music, because of her. Thanks Mom!
BTW, my pic is of the original walk up stand in the 50’s for Whataburger. That was our treat sometimes, for lunch(and dinner) on Saturday. Then off to the drive-in movie, that night.

Willie Nelson is an all-time favorite for me. He has such a gift in music, he can do it all, and quite well. Raised by the grandparents, who were musical and active members of their church, they taught Willie and his sister, Connie, about music. The (then) children also learned about hard work, as the grandparents were farmers. Willie is quite an entertainer; I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert one time. I loved every minute of it!

I saw Willy about three years ago, at a charity event at a little arena in Parry Sound Ontario. There was about three thousand people, and Willy was 81 at the time. He was the only guitar on stage, and very much the front man. I thought he might have lots of musicians on stage , but it was minimal, and he put on a great show. A true legend. The old gals were still throwing bras on stage, and he was 81.

Wonderful and accurate musical analysis. The sounds Willie gets out of that beat up old guitar are amazing. While Willie doesn't have a great voice as in, range and power, the odd way he phrase's is so original you know immediately within a few notes who's singing the song. It's so perfectly musical just like his guitar playing.
Saw Willie here in Nashville at the Ryman a few years ago. It was as fun as it sounds. I believe he was 82 at the time. His voice is still pretty damn solid and he still puts on a great show! Thanks Fil!

Just a bit of trivia. First guy to sign that guitar was Leon Russell.

For me, Willie Nelson has always been "The Voice of America!" His guitar playing, and of course, his guitar, is uniquely his own. His delivery of so many wonderful songs (including his own songs and many classic covers) must surely rank him as the Master of "phrasing!"
Just to talk of Willie’s focus and brilliance. His Album Red Headed Stranger - the best ever in my opinion. Was one continuous story. Turned into a great old western movie and many hits.
I am now watching this on Monday afternoon April 4 at lunchtime and I recognize a few familiar faces....Porter Waggoner, Marty Stuart., Kris Kristofferson, Chet Atkins to name a few....Willie is very resilient and still going strong after all these years...very impressed and amazed and I know he has put out some amazing music over the years but even though his life has been rough he still makes amazing music and having some of country music's biggest legend sit and admire him in awe is absolutely amazing in my opinion...a living legend in his own time...

True. He can make you miss how great he is on guitar. He hung out in Lexington some, with his friend, gubenatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith, who ran on a platform to legalize cannabis. They used to ride around town in Gatewood's Mercedes that ran on hemp oil and old french fry oil. When they drove by, you were either real happy or real hungry.
There will never be another Willie! He is just so unique musically. I live here in Willie Nelson country Austin, Tx, and Willie is a legend here and they even put a statue of him in downtown Austin. The first song of his that got me really interested in playing the guitar, is "Blue Eyes Crying in The Rain", when I was around 14 years old in Oklahoma. Great analysis video.

Willie is one of the best song writers in the business. There is a story that when he wrote Crazy that a number of female singers wanted to record it. This one singer had it but after hearing Patsy Cline sing it she said you have to be the one who records it. Can you imagine how many of his songs performers said I have to record that song.
Willie is an engaging storyteller. Your analysis helped me appreciate that quality of his.
I love Willy. His guitar playing never seemed to go along with the song, but it all works out. Amazing voice.
The guy that cleans up Trigger every year is in Austin here in Texas. Just waiting for the day I can bring my dad's old Martin 12 string in to him to get the frets and stuff back up to playing condition. My dad played it for 40 years so it's been well worn in.
