It's summer. Take your less than top shelf speakers for a spin on the back deck on a nice weather day. With zero room coloring, they'll sound better! A cool beverage in hand, relaxing on a fully extended lounge chair....life will seem just perfect, even without perfect speakers.
Ya I wanna try this, thanks!
I really like this vibe thinking 🏖️
Usually, I get quality time w get-back-to-basics speakers during the winter, near the fireplace
but this works too. Great reminder, cheers
Still loving my Lintons and they didn’t broke the bank. 😋
Love mine as well.
Road trips with the kids in the back. Yup, been there a few times. In 20 years you'll look back at this trip as a collection of absolutely precious memories. Thanks for posting from the road Randy. Great video.
Lol I love that they are in buccees costumes/hoodies 😂
@@outerspacebass Randy needs to forward this vid and the last one to Buccees management for a sponsorship payout LOL
The kids are adorable. Speakers are voiced differently because everyone has different preferences. I loved the Andrew Jones Elac UF5. Since then I’ve had the Martin Logan motion 35 xti and kef r3 meta. I like the kefs a lot but I do miss how everything sounded good on the elacs and it never ever ever sounded bright.
Andrew Jones is really good about remembering that people listen to real world music no matter what speaker company he's at.
Tne problem is when i grew up you could walk in and listen to the speakers before buying them, unfortunately now all those stereo stores are gone.
Yes, you could listen to them at the dealership, in a room different from yours at home, often with different electronics attached. You really need to hear speakers in your own room to make an informed decision - so I don't miss these listening rooms at shops quite as much.
Actually you can still listen to them. Albeit in a perfectly treated room. Go to a place with a liberal return policy…..
Thank the internet
@@randalljwarren151 Most places I used to work in back in the day had a solid demo program. We wanted clients to know what things sounded like at home, and encouraged that.
My local Big Box store (Best Buy) doesn’t even have a listening room. Only a couple of high end stores around town. I did go into a BB in Grand Junction, CO and they had a wonderful listening room with what I assume was speakers hooked up and driven right. It really gave me a new appreciation for some brands I’ve looked over.
@cheapaudioman, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Dayton Audio Opal1
Hey brother, love your content. I am a complete noob when ot comes to AV and I started with a pair of Klipsch R14M and a Sony STRD190 as I live in a tiny apartment. I recently moved and upgraded to a pair of Monolith T5 towers and they sound amazing. What are your thoughts on the Monolith line of tower speakers? Not many reviews on these on YT.
Randy, sometimes I wonder if the Micca RB-42's weren't meant for vintage class AB amps. Mine are in our dining room (about 16' x 12'), which connects to the kitchen (about 18' x 13') with only a counter between them. I drive them with a 1977 Kenwood SA-3500, 40 honest wpc RMS into 8 ohms. I tame the bass with one click to the left and boost the treble one click to the right. If I'm using them for very soft background music while dining, I do flip on the switch, at which point the music is very clear and detailed. On the other hand, with the loudness off, I can crank them to a good 85-90 dB without distortion or clipping. Maybe it has to do with room acoustics? Or maybe it has to do with the fact that 98% of the music to which we listen in the dining room is classical? I guess we'll just agree to disagree.
Hi Randy, hope you well man. I think I told you before but I have the last gen Buchardt S400 MKII and I have to tell you that I did listen to all sorts of speakers through the years and never ever experienced anything this good. Then, I have them paired with the Buchard I150 Integrated amplifier which is an incredible state of the art piece of audio with a built in fabulous DAC, Built in room correction which works phenomenal, then bass management and an app which allows you to memorise a few different set up combinations, different parametric eq completely configurable, low and high shelving eq's lots of digital inputs, up to 300 watt, 2 different power supply lines and a fully analog volume knob which is hard to believe the results it produces. All of this because it might be that these speakers, despite they are excellent with any amp (particularly Hegel), they go to heaven with their proper sibling amp. You should check out the combo. Anyway, thanks a lot for the video and much love from West Spain!❤
For all us mere mortals on a budget, I'm in love with the Micca MB42X under $90. These models have their crossovers. Amazing sound for everyone on a real life tight budget who still love music and want to hear great sound.
Thanks Randy
If you're looking for budget speakers, one route is to get an older set of laid back speakers and re-cap them. I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to get my hands on a pair of Advents, large or small, and modernize the crossovers. I am using Monitor Audio 852's (silk dome tweets). I replaced the internal wiring with high-quality wire, silver, and the xover caps are now Mundorf MCap Oil. Incredible improvement in all aspects. Total investment less than $30 per speaker. The speakers originally cost about $750/pr in 1990, so you've gotta start with something good.
The xovers in my speakers consist merely of an inductor and a cap, so, all else considered, they're easy to drive with a low-power amp.
Speaking of Advents I carted a pair of their Calypso indoor outdoor speakers around in my old Dodge surf van. When Dudley died and I had to have him towed away I took the speakers and put them in the garage mated with a Nikko 20 watt amp and I could not believe how great they work! A pseudo-audiophile friend of mine came over and he was amazed, so I know it's just not me. I scored another pair of them for $35 on eBay and sent them to my daughter and I'm awaiting her raves. For the money, they are golden.
How about trying the PMC Prodigy 5? Kind of balanced and not fatiguing with a balanced source. Great you mentioned Triangle, the BR02 rocks. It sounds right and the midrange sounds natural more so than speakers costing much more likely due to paper based drivers.
Ok I usually fast forward through the commericals but that brass wallet is very tempting.
You forgot the Wharfedale Diamond 12.2 those loudspeakers it’s a pair of outstanding loudspeakers ..
it is all a matter of personal taste when it comes to the speakers.
I love the Lintons. I wrestled with getting KLF model 5s instead but picked the Lintons based on your review of some other speaker. You’d mentioned that you used the wharfdales in some room of your house and that’s what really sold me.
I would agree with most of your opinions as there are a few I haven't heard. On a side note, just picked up a clean set of older B & W 685 series 1. Very musical and sweet!
I love my Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2,driven by a vintage high power amp
Videos of your daughters decked out in Bucee's gear in the background mocking you are priceless, and should be a regular part of your channel. Charley in Waco approves!
He had money left over after Buc-ee's?
Hey Randy from Edmonton AB, GO Oilers. Love your channel! Hows about getting in some Klipsch RP 8000F II for us. I love mine but would like to match it up with a different AVR....please.
Hah Randy I also spent my week with the out-of-school kids in my CX-90 PHEV with white interior in a Costco parking lot thinking about speakers. I just got mine a few weeks ago, it’s amazing.
Well Randy, either I'm blind, my page wouldn't show the $500 audiophile system or you forgot to post it.
Funny that you mentioned some of these. I started with a pair of Elac B6.2's and upgraded to the OG LS 50's. Recently had the KLH model 5's in house, but sent them back when I settled on the Focal Aria line home theater system L/R/C and pair of Flax Domes for the rear. Still using the LS 50's for side surrounds.
Focal Aria is an awesome choice! Get the rest speakers in Focal Aria, to match the house sound of Focal.
@@ivanfilatov7913 Yeah, got the 936's and the center channel for under 3 g's shipped. Just saving up for a pair of SR 900's for the rear and 2 more domes for atmos speakers.
I have the focal arias as well and really enjoy them, but I think his comments about the cheaper focals being fatiguing can apply to the arias (to a lesser degree). Only for certain types of music (punk, heavy metal...) I ended up buying a used cambridge audio dacmagic for cheap and SOO much better. Fatigue gone, bass punchier, more sound depth, clarity. Really nice.
I'm a little disappointed they didn't have a Bucky's costume in your size!!! I may write them a letter...
Hi audioman , I am looking at the tannoy B6 platinum series. Just wondering why is there not much reviews about it
Hoping for a Speedwoofer 10e review soon!
I was just looking at the specs for my Power Sound Audio 15Vs. The 10e looks like it beats them handily with +5db more at 20hz. Impressive!
Wondering what's your take on Dynaudio speakers? I dont think you have reviewed any yet just curios of your opinion. Enjoy your reviews keep it up.
The Buc-ees' outfits are great!
Any thoughts on Boss Amplifiers? The real Boss by Roland. I have the Boss Katana bass amp (class A/B) 160 watts that use for Bluetooth streaming music and the occasional backyard movie. Has global EQ. Obviously i use it for its intended purpose as a bass amp but found the 2 ten inch speakers have some great range.
Vintage Fender Bassman is great!!! Not really hifi, but makes instruments sound realistic.
I recently bought the P300’s from Buchardt. I heard a review that the 400’s only make sense with higher end sources and amps and in effect most people will be happiest with the 300’s. I got mine in the sale for around £1000.00 (based in uk). I’m fairly happy with them but I think the issues lie within room placement. If I could have them further out from the wall they would shine but I can’t. They are a huge improvement over my last speakers but …… i wish I’d auditioned more to be honest. Love the channel!! Hi kids 😂😂😂👋🏼👋🏼
Bought the Aperian 5 what can I do to make them better I should have picked a different one
Which are yours: Aperion Novus or Intimus? Bookshelf or tower?
Don't you understand, to be a great reviewer You MUST LOVE every piece of audio equipment you review!!! - Thanks for the better than great review. People have committed against me, stating that I can just go listen to stuff myself and make my own decisions. Sorry, not many stores carry or have on display the variety of items available to make investment type decisions of which is going to satisfy over the long-haul.
I never got on with the Kef Meta or original, B&W too even the 800 series. I liked the Proac Tablette 10 and now use Acoustic Energy A1 active
Elac Debut B5.2, need good break in but sounds great afterward !!!
Maybe I should get busy breaking mine in then. I've been disappointed so far. Sony SSCS5 actually sounds better to me.
Do you like the elac ub5 better than the kef meta 50?
I don't find the ub5 dynamic, either. But they work well in surround sound imo. And they are ok, in 2 channel, for critical listening as long as you don't love super exciting.
I do like them better than the ls50 because they're so much cheaper. they do have a lot in common though. like the ls50 the uni 2.0's need a lot of juice to get them dynamic.
I have the Elac B6, UB5 and UC5. Like them both. Just upgraded to the Unify References for $760 to get better high frequency for dialog (ears going bad). So I skipped the Unify 2.0’s. Like them a lot, but they don’t match well with the UC5 center. So I’m back to 2.1 stereo. The UCR62 center is $699. Crap. Waiting for a sale on that.
Great one Randy,we need more honest videos like this one
You forgot to make the link to the awesome audio system for $500.
Hi, thank you for your videos, which are always very enriching, so I just subscribed. I understand that you listen to metal from time to time, could you make us a "my best speakers" video from bookshelf speakers for metal? That would be really interesting, because clarity is very important across the spectrum with this very dense music and the bass has to follow. Futhermore a lot of productions have bad mastering and it is not always useful to put a lot of money into equipment to finally listen to poorly produced albums... Quite interested in your opinion on this type of music. See you soon on your channel. ;-)
Hi listening from Manchester UK.....what do you think about the ISO acoustics GAIA 2 feet.....I just got them on my kef r700 the difference is huge
Yeah...iso-acoustics products are legit good. Nothing like the cheap feet or pucks one can get off Amazon. Their products can be considered expensive by some people but usually the results are worth the price in my opinion
Ok ,you are 💯 right but the best cheap speaker is the Fyne Audio F1.8 ❤🎉
Only speakers I haven't heard are the little Neumi's... Have to agree w/ you, Randy, on the others... some for similar feelings regarding their sound signatures - the others for my own personal 'flavour'... *B&W/Klipsch/KEF LS50 >>> !!?? so popular*... Have an amazing Summer vacation. All the very best from a Scotsman in JPN.
I'm one of those who loves his KLH Model 5's. Big, clear, "vintage" great sound IMO. I put a single Model 3 in there as a center speaker and wow! With my BasX A3 driving the front three, music AND movies are terrific in my living room. Just my take and my experience.
Borea br03 are insane for 349usd i pair it with a Onkyo tx 8270 😎🤘👌
I have the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2’s. I LOVE them, but maybe because they’re my official first pair of audiophile-level speakers. Maybe I don’t know better. 😆
Im with you.
@@gln121970 They won’t be my last speakers though - I have ambitions 😁
@@AllAboutRush im with you there. Although my ambitions are really some Klipsch Fortes and possibly a pair of KEFs to continue the trend of ones Randy doesn’t like.
cool. Hats off to you for a great vid with all of the (cute) shenanigans going on in the background.
OK, nice video as usual, loved the "on the road" format. Your eldest daughter is going to be a star one day! I can easily see her with her own channel one day...
Just bought the Monitor Audio Silver 100 6G in white from Facebook market for great price. Cant wait to hook'm up
Klipsch Heresy IV are not perfect speakers, but I never thought anyone would pick out lack of dynamic range as their flaw. I gotta think that was down to amp pairings. I put a 5 watt Decware tube amp on them and they have dynamic range for days. They are not the speakers for bass heads that is true (though put them 12" from your front wall and it will get closer.)
I really want a review on the new svs evolution series. Gorgeous looking. Like focal grand utopia.
I just did a review on the bookshelves
He already did a review of the SVS Evolution.
I agree with most of your takes. At least the ones with which I have first hand experience. Funny thing is so many of the companies on this list have similar-ish models that are among my favorite speakers. In general, I tend not to be a fan of Klipsch, KEF or recent B&Ws. B&W used to have very decent options for most people but then started doing this exaggerated high mids and top end thing which can be fun for about five minutes, but is not something a lot of people want to settle down with. The LS50s... man... it's a speaker that does some things SOOOO well but overall just seems very lackluster. Focals have always been divisive but I have heard a number of them that I could not live with long term but the Chorus 807Ws on my stands at the moment might be my favorite speakers I've ever owned.
Klipsch Heresy IV “aren’t very dynamic“?! Wtf?! lol! 😂
The Heritage line has some difficult impedance curves. Lower current amps will struggle despite its high stated efficiency. You'd need to use the 4 ohm taps on tube amps.
@@1mctousI use mine with a high-current SS amp. I don’t know what he’s talking about. Klipsch Heritage are very efficient loudspeakers albeit not as efficient as advertised by Klipsch, but they still use compression drivers that are inherently more efficient than conventional domes/cones mounted directly on a front baffle.
Moreover, Klipsch Heritage are very good HT loudspeakers. They’re very punchy with any decent/dynamic soundtrack/score.
They’re not the “end all/be all” of loudspeakers, but as any loudspeakers go: you have XXXX $ to spend then you make your choice regarding sound output, look, tonality and what not [WAF] lol!
As you said, different strokes. The complete lack of braces and absorptive material kills the deal for me since any mods would void the warranty. The Heresy boxes resonate strongly at several upper bass-lower mid frequencies.
@@1mctous It’s a “fun loudspeaker“ not a “hi-fi loudspeaker“… I went from B & W to Klipsch: no regrets whatsoever. My next move will be OB [open baffles] 😉.
I would like to see you review the Wharfedale AURA 2.
I tried restoring a pair of Infinity speakers, nice model too. Got done refoaming the woofers and it turns out one is blown. 😣 I've got like ten hours into fixing these speakers and my hands a covered in sticky glues. Wanted to keep the original drivers to preserve the sound. Now the bargain speakers I got for $8 have cost me $135! Had to buy replacement woofers. Sometimes hifi can bite you in the ass.
I think the elac debut 6.2 is worth 2 1/2 the price of the sony sscs5. Not great for grunge, great for sparser music - accoustic jazz especially- can really feel the breath and space around each instrument, and can push the volume a bit. Sony is great for low level listening, doesn't go loud happily.
Lol not a bad dad! Glad you got them buckled up. I always enjoy your content. Hope yalls trip is\was a blast.
My rb42 is good enuf in my sons room 5.1.2 with sony 1080, Sounds great.
Oh come on dad you love them ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I got the Sony SScs5 speakers on your recommendation. Interestingly enough, I like them more with my jazz records than my rock ones. Maybe it's the recording quality coming through, but the rock records are a tiny bit less expressive through those speakers whereas the jazz records make them sound like $5000 speakers.
Maybe it's my small room?
I have that pair too, and I added the SS-CS9 subwoofer and it really fills my medium size room whether I'm playing vinyl, CDs, or using it for output for my TV.
@@ericmayle8510 i feel like a sub in my 12 x 14 room would be too much. When I move my system to the main open living room I'll probably get one.
I don't understand why people hate them.... I like them for their price, kinda have a Focal Chora 806 sound which I love.
@@ivanfilatov7913 most specialized groups have rich snobs who feel the need to rationalize their purchases buy crapping on lower priced stuff.
Not that everyone with nice gear do this, but enough do to make it a "thing" it's like this in guitar amps too as well as car customization
@macheesmo3 I understand that too.
This episode brought to you by Buckeyes. Best way to spend down time at Buckeyes ever.
Love the Buchardt S400 Mark II!
They are very good
How big is your room? What do you drive them with?
@@Arthax83 I use the Buchardt I150 with room EQ. Feeding it with either onboard or a Galion TS A75. I have a Sub I let run up to 60Hz and speakers going down to 35hz flat on their own. Room is 40m2.
@@Arthax83I also have the MK2’s with the Buchardt i150 in a 14x17’ dedicated room. They go down pretty low but am using an older Emotiva sub I had laying around for that last octave. Pretty happy with these but wish I could do more live comparisons before making a purchase.
I picked up a pair of used s400 mk2 speakers for half price, I don't think they would be worth the full price, but they are great speakers, until I find a suitable used amp for cheap I have them running with my Sonos amp, which does a surprisingly good job, but I can tell these speakers need more power.
Hey Randy, I agree those are all overrated. But have you ever tried Dynaudio Evoke 10? That is the benchmark sub $2,000 loudspeaker imo. I bought it and it sounds great. It just needs a high current amplifier like Rotel 1572 MkII to make it sing.
Randy, what is a "fun" speaker?
depends on what’s defined as “fun”
some people think lively & forward is fun
eg klipsch, triangle
some people think warm & relaxed is fun
eg wharfdale lintons
It's just some BS word that tells us nothing 😂
But it makes us happy, don't it??
@@SoulDaddy33 @NosEL34 😆it ain't complicated, really. Steve Guttenberg aka Audiophiliac defines it as: if your toes are tappin' and the speaker's sound makes ya want to keep listening to more music ...= fun
@@NosEL34 Well that's not true. You just have to have an idea of the tastes of the person saying it.
Those Buc-ee's outfits!!
Daring comments! Wonderful !
Kinda bummed that you are ultimately underwhelmed by the KLH Model 5. I do love mine and they fit our room real well. Almost went with Linton but it would have interfered with the TV and I could not pull them away from the wall far enough, per the recommended distance.
FINALLY! I'm not alone in dislike of the Focal Theva's! I substantially regret having paid out for 4x No.3-D's, 1x Center and 2x Surround's. I feel deceived by the reviews. Claiming things were open in the midrange was complete BS. Upper midrange doesn't exist with these. I am intending to buy Dali Oberon 9 as fronts, Oberon 7 as Sides, Center as center, Surround as rear, Oberon 3 as front Atmos and Oberon 1 as side Atmos speakers.
Just to try something else rather than live in my love of soundstage found in Martin Logan. But I do feel a bit ripped off by the reviews of the Theva's. Convinced me to pay out thousands just to feel let down.
Photo bombed by The Cookie Monster!
The kids acting EXACTLY like my wife when I start talking about audio. :)
Thanks!
Wow! Thank you!
Nice you have sponsors, but it t I s a good reason to start using chapters 😂
Kick it...well done. This was an overall qualitative review that noone have us before. Thank you
I don’t like the KEF either. To me it’s just too “DRY”. But honestly Buc-ee stole the show! 😂
7:19 Thanks Randy! You da man.
Randy ... where is your Buc-ee Onesie lol
Dude, can't hear a word with the beaver characters behind you bombing your video. 😆 Nice.
The kids took over the video! Great kids!
I was actual taken for a trip down memory lane by the daughters not being upright in a seat and belted on the trip. I travled probably 1,000,000 across the USA and Europe laying down on the back seat or with seats folded down into cargo mode with pillows and blankets. We did it in Boy Scouts as well. None of the buses I used in Europe or USA required one to use a seat belt. Most of them did not even have seat belts. When I would be states side on summer vaction with my cousins kids often road in the bed of the pickup truck.
I would not let anyone call you a "bad dad" for that! Where are all the seat belts on US Navy vessels. I am sure there is not a seat with a belt for everyon on a ship or even a boat!
Facts. Yes it's technically less safe, but this used to be the norm. As a kid, in the 90s or early 2000s, I would sit on the floor in the middle of our customized Astro van to watch movies on longer trips. People need to chill.
I really liked the Debut B6, but went with the Debut Reference, mostly because I'm exhausted with the "black box, black grille" look. So tired and dated. It couldn't cost much (or any) more to use different finishes, interesting grille cloth like it used to be for decades. As it turns out, I reeeeealy like the References..... they're a good match for the Yamaha A-S301.
Technically it's never a speaker problem, it's an EQ problem.
If it's not an EQ problem, it's time to check that speaker.
Try to understand that when the Appetite for Destruction dropped by Guns and Roses, My friends and I were discovering 3 way car speakers helps a guitar amp with range.
That was the beginning of the end for all the guitar amps - Except we do use the 80s Slant 30 marshal cabs as reference. The greenback sound.
Bro ls50 meta is phenomenal! Honestly I liked it more than the reference 1 meta! It’s not as resolving and lacks bass but it makes up for it in spades with sound stage and taming bad music mixes!
Your kids costumes are funny, you can tell they are having fun.
as a SoCal person IN-N-OUT for life. and if you really like McDonalds over the rest, you might need help. and I licked up the Klipsch 8-inch towers for a killer deal last year on the previous gen set. the highs are a little much occasionally, but they are a beast for the pricing I got them at.
"Just some weirdness going on in the upper mid range..."
Now that's the kinda technical explanation you just don't get on every reviewers channel.
😂
Going back to the printed media era.. even then audiophiles didn't agree on speakers and other equipment. Randy keep calling em' as you you see them.
It is not at all about right or wrong - it is all and only about enjoying one's music in all its glory in whichever way and on whatever equipment one desires and having tons of fun.
B
I had the Sony CS5, and I am running the Emotiva B1 (desktop) but the best speaker that I have is the (1976) Cornwall 2 (with all original drivers) I bought for $500.
For that price, you can't beat them.
As a father of two girls I enjoy their geting into the video.
ROAD TRIP! But first, BUC-EES!!!
Your daughters are thrilled. haha.
I am surprised you haven't mentioned Jansen Speakers highly under rated professional musicians and studio producers love them ,
You're absolutely right about the Debut 6.2. I had the 5.2 and was very quickly obvious to me that the mark 2 version totally ruined what was great about the original. It sounded how it looked - kind of a boring mess as if it had been designed by committee.
Lol yes i did note the lack of seatbelts plus one of your girls was facing the wrong way but then I noticed you were parked So all good. 😃
What do you think of the golden ear brx
I liked them quite a bit
Have you heard Yamaha NS1000?
Your little girls are very cute....and happy! You are blessed.
I'm not sure I'd disagree with your assessment of the Heresy's but I'd add some caveats. I own the Cornwalls which are very different. In the Klipsch community, the Heresy's are usually in small urban dwellings or paired with a subwoofer. And they are really considered a reference jazz speaker rather than anything close to Metallica. Which also where I part from Randy on judging speakers. I like metal and often listen to stuff reasonably heavier than Metallica. But I listen to that in my workshop or truck. I really never begin to think about using metal as a reference track for any of the too many speakers I own. Other than punch I just don't feel the recordings offer much to my ears to properly judge my units. I get that Randy listens to those bands a lot and have at it but I've also noticed that very few, if any, of the other reviewers use that type of music to rate equipment. Perhaps that's a value that CAM brings to the table for those who have been wanting that genre as test tracks.
In-N-Out for sure. I don't understand the Texas infatuation with Whataburger. Blech!
For me, those shitty Sony’s are bad. However, they’ll pull surround sound duty.
Randy, with so many reviewers endlessly heaping praise on every speaker they review, it's great to hear someone say, "Eh, this one didn't do it for me!"
