Good to see you on the way to DIY lens cleaning. One piece of advice: If you begin with lens cleaning, don't stab at the dark. Look for a good tutorial on the specific lens you want to clean. // Cemented elements: No, they almost never pose a problem. The cemented surfaces are naturally protected against the environment. There are only very few cemented lenses where the cement is known to deriorate or even separate. (The Canon on your table is not one of them.) // In most cases you want to get to the glas surfaces facing the aperture blades. That's where the haze builds up over time. // Microfibre cloth is super for spectacles, not for lenses. As soon as the cloth picks up the tiniest amount of grease, it's "contaminated" for good. I prefer using loads of Q-tips in combination with Kimtech tissues (there may be other brands just as good). In any case, avoid wiping dry!
Thanks. The photo on the cover is my Canon 50mm f1.8 and most info I’ve read says it normally suffers from haze/ fogging. (I bought a second one to use as they’re decent when working). I bought some lint free tissues but they seem to introduce micro scratches so I thought to recommend ‘safe’ clothes instead. Yes to having clean ones.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Haze yes, but not (usually) _within_ a cemented group. Take out _all_ four lens groups (6 lenses in 4 groups) and inspect them individually! The Canon 50/1.8 is easy to work on. See e.g. czcams.com/video/HX93S2iuG5E/video.html
Fun and useful info! Practicing on a cheap lens is very good advice! A few more tips/cautions: (1) If you take elements out of the lens, make sure you keep track of which side faces up/out. You'd think it would be easy to tell when reassembling... until you run across one where it's NOT easy to tell. Reinstalling an element the wrong way 'round is likely to reduce the performance of the lens. (2) When disassembling, watch for and keep track of shims. These are thin rings used to get precise spacing between pieces. Usually they're metal, but some Soviet lenses have paper shims; they work fine, but are more delicate. (3) If a threaded ring won't turn with your spanner or rubber cup, check along the edge to make sure there isn't a tiny setscrew/grubscrew holding it in place. If you miss this and try to force the ring off (tip #0: never force anything!!!) you'll gouge the barrel. Sometimes these screws are very cleverly hidden.

Great do see you make your way into cleaning. It's a really usefull skill. A few lenses are already hard to get in great condition and others get foggy while you have them. I just realized that my 50mm f2 Summicron gets a fog "ring" on a inner element. I have it now for almost 15 years and it's from 1952.

Great video. I would strongly recommend using a dedicated lens cleaner rather than alcohol. All coatings aren’t created equally so using a dedicated lens cleaner would be the safer choice in my opinion. I learned this after using alcohol and destroying an old Kodak retina rangefinder lens.

Just an extra cautionary point Matt, be very careful with the seating area where your lens element sits. It should be clinically clean. As little as a few hundreds of a milimiter of debris or dirt will cause lens misalignment.

MATT : This is a great video , I have tried cleaning my M42 A. SCHACT ULM lenses with the " inner barrel " when the feathers or blades in the 16 blade aperture malfunctioned , those lenses are very complex ... ended up having a Master in JAPAN assemble 2 lenses into one , out of the best components. I now have 2 superb quality 90mm 2.8 A.SCHACT ULM 16 blade 90mm lenses and in the correct cylindrical original cases , with original caps. I love those 2 lenses too . Good video. 💪🏻

Nice tips, I found that in a pinch you can use the back of a set of digital callipers if you're careful. :D I managed to open up and fix a Summilux 50mm by doing that but obviously the proper tool for the job is a lot better/safer.

Interesting thought. I’ve never seen that documented but possibly with more modern lenses.
CANON L39 50mm 1.2 are known for the failure of the optical block bonding , the ONLY repair is at KANTO CAMERA of JAPAN ... they have new optical blocks made , and I have this block in my 50mm 1.2 L39 lens ... this is an oft ignored lens , as it is the little brother of the CANON 0.95 Dream Lens , that I also have.

I’m be seen some popular CZcams repair guys use alcohol but one comment suggested be careful with older lens coatings. I’ve had no issues so far.

Did you mend the M3 at the back of the cloth yourself, was there a tear? Hmmm ok I think you know what you are doing and know your way around. Of course, it's also much cheaper than having it done by a professional workshop or directly by Leica. I wouldn't dare 😁

M3 yes, if small hole you can fix but not tear.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom is understandable, a crack is of course worse and shouldn't happen even a hole. but at least it's easy to repair that way.
cool... i have never cleaned any of my lenses.. probably leave it to the tech' but would be useful if i had anywhere near the number of lenses as you =)

Did you use ZEISS LENS WIPES CLEANING to clean lens glasses? People say Alcohol will damage lens coating. Zeiss lens clean wipes 100% protect coating, n clean very good .
