  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Though the observational data does appear rife ( • Video ) with reverse causation, a new study (www.nature.com/articles/s4159...) published interventional data in mice and in vitro on 2/27/23 that suggests erythritol may indeed be harmful, and so I urge everyone to stop consuming it until we know more.

The antioxidant content of a number of popular beverages is compared: black tea, coffee, Coke, espresso, grape juice, green tea, hibiscus tea, milk, Pepsi, Red Bull, red tea, red wine, and white wine. Which beats out even powdered (matcha) green tea?

Hibiscus is awesome. Being of Mexican heritage 'agua de jamaica' (literally hibiscus water), hibiscus iced tea was something I drank. I had no idea it was so healthy. You can find loose hibiscus at Mexican grocery stores. The packaged might be labelled 'Jamaica'. FYI Jamaica in Spanish is pronounced Ha-my-cah. It's not pronounced like the country. Another thing. If I remember right hibiscus is a diuretic. So get ready to pee. :)

Let us not forget about the L theanine that is found in green tea. This helps to reduce anxiety and improve mood.
Even if Coffee has more anti oxidants than green tea it still tends to have too much caffeine which dis-regulates the adrenal glands.
Anti-oxidant levels alone is a poor measure for the health of a drink.

Something you might want to think about, while researching I came across several references concerning lead found in green tea. On one site- "All plants can absorb lead from the environment, but tea absorbs it more readily than other plants. Fortunately, only about 10% to 20% of the lead that’s in tea gets into the liquid portion-most stays trapped within the leaves. If you don’t swallow the leaves, your lead exposure will be minimal."

burnsport1 Nope, you are making interpretations that are not there. It DOES NOT conclude that green tea stimulates DNA repair only that such a hypothesis was investigated.

Dear Dr. Greger, thank you for this instructive and relevant information. Would you please be so kind as to make a video summing up the scientific consensus about the Kephir beverage? It seems to be a very promising pro-biotical drink, although it is still hardly studied. Thanks a lot !

What about the l-theanine + caffeine mix? I am assuming you don't get that with hibiscus tea. I would think the l-theanine/caffeine would have its benefits as described in your "Dietary Brain Wave Alteration" video, and that you couldn't get those benefits from drinking hibiscus.

I wonder what the pesticide level is in the type of tea the Dr chose? Apparently basics like Lipton twining tetley are loaded with it! I'm gonna spend the extra cash and do organic

Thanks for taking time to reply , what do you think of the White tea?Tea salesmen say it is the best among teas, are they correct? I want to know because when compared with green or Matcha tea the price of White tea is almost double or more.I will gladly pay if its a lot better than the rest but if its just a little better I will stick to my organic green tea and other herbal teas like chamomile , ginseng & hibiscus.

Dr Greger, when are you going on tour with a health awareness comedy routine? Or perhaps a book of anti-oxidant limericks?

Not sure of this, but the wild red berried sumac growing in many parts of the world may actually be higher - esp. if in the powdered form like they have in the Middle East. Like hibiscus tea, it is red and sour...needs sugar.

haven't tried this but there is a chemist that does a video for facial creme that I am getting ready to make and it has hibiscus tea in the recipe. I hope it is healthy for the old face as this is lo.

Hibiscus tea dried can be very tart and should not be brewed for more than 2 minutes. Apparently great for reducing blood pressure. Middle eastern grocery stores sell it cheaply.
