  • Welcome to the channel, or welcome back if you've been here before. The latest carved walking stick made from ash and hand carved. Stained with Danish oil with a dark walnut color and finished with a semi-gloss lacquer spray.
    Other than the intro, there's no talking in the video... something different but some have asked for it so I kept it simple today.
    Hope you enjoy the process of shaping and carving this stick down to the finished form.
    Please leave your comments below, I try and respond to everyone that writes in the comment section.
    Have a great day and see you soon.

    A few months ago I started making making sticks from fallen, oftentimes unidentified branches I find along the local creek here in Austin TX. I started simple and am getting better at planning and design as I go. I appreciate videos like this from experienced and talented folks like yourself. One trick that is working for me while stripping bark is to use my drawknife with the tapered edge facing down. I get almost no digging in when doing so. Saves sanding and smoothing out the digs I was getting.

      Nice, great tip... The drawknife is a long chisel so the concept makes sense. Thanks and glad you enjoyed the videos

    O nobre amigo Jason poderia fazer um tubo de PVC de um diâmetro um pouco maior que os bastões e com a altura suficiente para coloca-los dentro e encher de Danish oil. Depois deixar o bastão de molho dentro do tubo por umas 24 horas. Acredito que a madeira absorverá o necessário para preserva-la, além de deixa-la com um excelente aspecto. Parabéns pelo maravilhoso trabalho executado! ( Brazil )

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  Před rokem

      Nice, good idea. But you need alot of Danish oil to fill a pipe 5ft high! But makes sense to let the oil soak into the wood like that. Thanks!

      @@JasonHedrich Prezado Jason, eu imagino que se o amigo escolher um tubo de PVC com diâmetro muito próximo dos diâmetros dos bastões, irá se surpreender com a pequena quantidade de oil necessária pra preencher o tubo. Grande abraço !

    Can you strip the bark off a freshly cut stick or should you wait until it is dry?

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  Před rokem

      The bark comes off fairly easy when green with a knife. But it's also easy with a drawknife when dry. Cedar or pine works best when fresh, but I find the hardwoods I like doing it when dry. Leaving the bark slows down the drying process and less prone to cracking

    This is a thing I could see myself getting into . What would you say is the minimum investment to make with tools ect to be able to do this

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  Před rokem

      Most of this could be done with one Carving knife, a chisel and some sandpaper. Slowly add a spokeshave, then a rotary tool. Prices vary with brands, probably $100 could get you there

  • @bonsaibeanz
    @bonsaibeanz Před rokem +1

    Do you make them when the wood is green or when it is dry? 😮😊

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  Před rokem +2

      Always dry… I collect the sticks that are dead and on the ground… I don’t cut down live trees

      That’s called a Microplane… it usually hooks into a hacksaw handle but I made a custom one from cedar so it’s more comfortable to use when carving. Thanks for watching!
