That violet....sprinkle a few white dots over it and bam, galaxy in a single tube lol. That's such a gorgeous colour.
That sets makes the moodiest, prettiest neutral, with the vandyke brown and ultramarine blue!! I LOVE it ♥
I'm currently acquiring the full line (omg what a discount the sets are!) and you cannot make mud unless you deliberately set out to by mixing five, six pigments! Such amazing mixes with two and they move nicely but are easily controlled.
Thank you for this! Mijello are my favorite watercolors so far. Everyone raves about Daniel Smith, maybe my expectations were too high, but I was disappointed. I love Mijello's intense colors and they're my favorite for painting dark skin. I have the 36 colors and can't wait to try the pure pigments.
Jacqueline is the best! The speckling issue is particularly bad with this Arches-Mission Gold combo, but also happens with other papers like Strathmore. It can be covered with numerous layers but it get's pretty tedious!
My favourite colour is the Red Brown! 😍
I also found this problem a few days ago when I applied 30 paints of various brands (mainly of Mission Gold and few WN professional, Sennelier and Schmincke Horadam..) on the Arches Cold Press, 300gsm, and I was looking for the cause of this white dot issue. What I noticed is, WN Professional (Perlyene Green), Sennelier (Ultra Marine and Bright Red) and Mission Gold(Rose Madder, Ultra Marine, Vandyke Brown, Light Red and Red brown and its mixitures such as Hooker Green) had the issue noticeably. When I applied them again on the washed and dried paper, the issue was even reduced. It may be the reaction between strong gelatine for sizing and paint. Washing paper like stretching may reduce the problem.
I experience this with Arches (CP) with many different brands, including Daniel Smith. It looks saturated when wet but dries just like in your video.
I have paints from every major pro lines (yes, I collect) and this single pigment set is amazing.
Thank you for your comment. I was confused if i should buy daniel smith or something because of the hype. And then the problem with "flow" some say mijelo has... i only have mijelo so i cannot compare it and don't know if it is a real problem or i can just use a bit more water and I am good. Anyways i think I will stick to mijelo. Well i had the student set from w&n before and they do not compare. You kind of assured me it are good colors.
I have this set and love it.
The paint doesn't move as much as other brands I've tried but it's helped if you add a little ox-gall.
It was my first professional set and an absolute bargain at around £65 for 24 x 15ml single pigment colours and 7ml black/white.
Mine was sent from Seoul in Korea via an eBay seller.
I don't have any arches paper so can't testify to the white patches.

The details on the Canadian Amazon page says that using these colors, you can mix at least 28 more standard colors. Given that the other sets tend to mix muddier colors, I think this set has even more flexibility than the other sets!
That kind of speckling effect has happened on several papers I have tried, but I always assumed it was because of the paper quality, or a defect in the sizing. Perhaps it is brand/pigment dependent, too, like you say. Interesting.
For example, this happened once on a sample of Arches 300 gsm cold-pressed to a few brands of paint, but not on the same paper in a pad.

I’ve had the speckling issue with Arches across all the brands I own (Daniel Smith, Mijello, Shinhan, Schmicke, Sennelier, etc.) and I’ve always assumed it was either a defect with the sizing or aging sizing. It does also pop up on some Khadi papers I own too. Very annoying. I’ve found I can sometimes layer enough to hide it, but very often the specks show through/float to the surface of the following layers.
You can restore it with some watercolour ground. Tao has a video on this.

Is that hot press or cold press arches paper?

I have EXACTLY the same problem with Arches papers. Even new ones fresh out of the packaging have done this to me. I'd started to wonder if I was going crazy.

Ooooooo, I love them! I am a hot press fiend, so these might be for me! The Cobalt Green Deep and Dioxizine Purple really made my mind up, even leaving my beloved Payne's Grey on the curb. Thanks for the swatch therapy.

I have the worst luck with Arches paper being inconsistent in quality. I will not buy it anymore. Saunders Waterford is my new favorite after trying 8 different cotton papers multiple times.
yeah I am also leaning more towards saunders.
@@OtoKano I know it sounds like sacrilege to everyone 's god of paper and that I'm going against the tide. But for my inexperienced hand SW is easier and much more pleasant to work on and the quality is always the same. So I'll chance being burned at the stake.😉😜💜
Saunders is really good....you can also try Strathmore 500....the way they press their paper is good as Saunders.
@@SuperExadidas I have tried it and I'm not a fan. It doesn't diffuse or blend as well as SW imo. After 18 sheets it's just not for me if I can get SW. I'm glad it works for you though.💜👍

HI Oto! Thanks so much for this video series. It’s sooo cool hearing what you have to say about the paints. I noticed that I have the same issue with certain paints using the Strathmore 500 series watercolor paper as well. It seems to happen with W&N and Holbein paints.

I've had the weird white speckling on Arches and Strathmore 500, with more than a few brands of paint including Holbein and Winsor & Newton. When changing my swatch cards over from Bee paper to Arches recently, I noticed my new Roman Szmal Aquarius Red color did this as well. A long time ago I switched from Strathmore 500 just assuming it was that paper... but I guess certain pigments and brand's binders effect this. Struggling to avoid it!
I get the weird speckling too with my mission golds and strathmore 500. But only on the first laydown, if you layer the speckling disappears.

I have so many DS and I keep going back to these. I get such amazing contrast I can’t get with all DS. I go back to these 🤭🤭🤭 (correction, just realized mine is the 36 set. Now I’m tempted by this set 🙈🙈)
Some of those colors are lovely...another paint brand to explore. My pocketbook is cursing. Could the white dots be because of the hard sizing in Arches?

I've had that speckling thing with Arches paper (from a pad) also, with DS and MG paints with mass tone swatches. I thought it was just me! :D

You can now get Mission Gold tubes in Germany and the Netherlands in Gerstaeker shops. They are available on line, as well, so can be ordered from Europe, I think.
I don’t have mission gold or holbine in my collection of watercolors, but I do notice even with my schminke watercolors the white of the paper does show through with arches watercolor paper. I am one who doesn’t mind if the effect happens 🤷♀️
The speckling is more a pigment issue, than a paper issue. I have numerous swatches from different brands (DS, WN etc) on the same paper (Bockingford) which shows this clearly. It tends to only affect non-granulating colours, the winsor reds seem to be the worst. The pigment almost seems like it doesn't want to stick to the paper/sizing when swatched out. Prewetting paper dissolves the sizing and helps a bit.
I had the same problem with Arches. They replaced the paper after I sent in samples. It’s a sizing issue.
I've been painting in watercolour for about 6 months now and my 24 colour palette is a mix of W&N professional, DS and Art Spectrum. If I had my time again I would have just purchased this set. Most of my W&N paints are 5ml tubes because they are so expensive. Will probably replace them with these when I run out.
I'm happy to have come across this video. I had the white spotty problem on some new Winsor and Newton cotton journals I purchased about a year ago. I thought it was a sizing issue with the paper which made me sad since I had purchased 4 of the paper journals and haven't touched them since. I wonder what causes this issue. I am now excited to try other paint brands on the paper. I do enjoy the mission gold watercolors but won't use them for this paper or Arches. I will report to you if this happens with any of the other paper brands have.
Can you please tell the cool and warm colors in this 24 set.
Winsor and Newton professional has Viridian as pg7 as well.
That’s definitely only from the (batch of) paper, my Arches sheet was the same with White Nights and Daniel Smith colors. I didn’t have this with other papers.
I've noticed, its rather odd. I've got some Fabriano and st cuthberts mill, will see if it's any different on there xxxx
I have this set and after a year of trying to make them work I stopped using them. I do use Arches paper so that answers one question. I thought it was the paint causing the white paper to show. I'm going to get these back out and try them on my Bee Watercolor Paper. I also have a hard time because of the saturation of color. It also causes a shine. I like flat matte color so the shiny, too saturated colors drive me crazy. In my opinion Mission Gold takes time to get used to because of the fine line in overly saturation and shininess that can happen. I also have the 24 pan set. Mostly mixed colors which can cause muddiness very quickly and same issues of over saturation and shininess. While painting I have to constantly check how intense the color is on the brush. It's like they are dyes instead of pigment or maybe a combination of dye and pigment. Not much granulation. Even in the earthy colors. It's hard to explain but hopefully I made sense. If anyone has questions I will be happy to help. TFS, love your channel. Learn a lot from your videos. Like the white paper showing through. Again very grateful for you and your hard work. And there is an art shop(parkersartsupplies) in Sydney where displays the full Daniel Smith paints swatch on the paper looking like Arches CP. There are the similar white dots in some paints such as Prussian Green, Prussian blue and mainly dark purple and brown paints.

I'm wondering if that Ultramarine Blue is the same one as their Ultramarine Light 🤔 Am hoping to find their Autumn Autumn Orange and Quinacridone Violet in separate tubes as well!
Just reading through the comments here and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend paper that doesn't get these weird white dots when uses with mijello? I've noticed it on my arches paper as well with Sennelier and Qor watercolors too.
I am waiting for this set frm S. Korea. I have the 34 color set, 12 are pure pigment colors. I used Fabriano Extra White Hot Pressed paper and am waiting for the same C.P. I love these paints!
Is Mission Gold’s Quinacridone Permanent Rose different from Quinacridone Rose from other brands? I’m trying to figure out why it’s labeled as semi-opaque.
I think the speckling is more of a vehicle issue. I tested the exact same pigment (single pigment tubes of pb29, pbr25, pr122, pb28, pv23) from four other different brands (DS, MG, Maimeri, Holbein) on the same sheet of paper. One of the brands was Holbein which does not have ox gall either. All except the mijello left no specking. Which breaks my heart a little because I really want to love this set (I got the 34 tubes single pigment set).
I would love to know if anybody has any ideas regarding this. I will try adding Ox gall but I’m not sure that would really solve the actual cause because Holbein does not use it either and there is no issue with that. Ps the papers I used were arches cp, Saunders cp, and fabriano cp.
Does Mijello Mission Gold contain ox-gall? I have a feeling not hence the issue with a wash.
No they don't.
I'm currently experimenting with a pan of ox gall and it does help with movement.
Beautiful colors! I bought the permanent magenta after your colossal color showdown episode and noticed there was white speckling when it was watered down to an even water to paint consistency on the Bee 100% cotton paper and Canson XL paper. It was a bit of a disappointment. (It’s truly a wonderful, vibrant paint besides that!) However, it didn’t speckle on the Mossery mix media sketchbook, so I have hope that this will work on some paper! (Perhaps hot pressed paper would be better?🤔) Fingers crossed we can find 100% cotton paper that can take these gorgeous paints!
celagail try Saunders- I have had speckling with several brands of paint ( inc mission gold) on arches but not on saunders. Hope that helps

Oh, Dr. Kano!! Maybe you (or anyone else reading this thread) are able to shed some light on this puzzle....
Last month I purchased a tube of Mission Gold's "Permanent Rose." Every brand of Permanent Rose that I've ever looked at consists of a single pigment, PV19, which, as you know, is extremely lightfast/permanent. I didn't read the info on the tube at the time of purchase, but I did once I got home. I was very surprised (and confused) to see that it consisted of TWO pigments, PR209 and PR122. No mention of PV19 at all! And on top of that, isn't PR122 the same fugitive pigment used in Opera Pink?!?!? Also, it showed only a FOUR star rating, not an excellent FIVE star rating that one would expect.
So I checked the Mission Gold Watercolour Chart (the brochure that shows all of their paints) and it says "Permanent Rose" is made of only PV19. Also, according to their brochure, it is given a FIVE star rating. I next went online and found the same information... PV19 and a Five star rating!?!
I am very confused. Maybe it's just a typo, but it's kind of hard to believe they would make TWO typos (pigments AND lightfastness) on one tiny label. Should I believe the information on the tube, or should I believe the information on their chart and online? Do you know of any tests I could preform that would tell me if it's a single pigment or not? Thank you, Oto, for anything that may shed a light on this :)
Mijello is nortorious for putting more than one pigment into a color name that is commonly done with just one pigment. That is why they had to come out with their 'pure pigment set'. From my experience, there is A LOT of confusion about pigment information of some colors. I *suspect* that they have made more than one version of some colors. I often get messages saying I got the pigment info wrong because it's different from what they have. But hey, I am going by what the tube says.
@@OtoKano Hmmmmm, I did not know that. It's very peculiar that they use more than one pigment when it's not necessary. And kinda deceptive when all of their literature states it is only one pigment. Thanks for your response, despite their beautiful colours I likely won't purchase any others from them.
It's not the PR122 which makes opera pink a less lightfast color but the PV10 in the mix. PR 122 is a pretty stable pigment. On the other hand, warmer, rose shades of PV19 are a bit less lightfast than the cooler violet shades of PV19. The lightfastness of PV19 changes accordingly by the treatment of this pigment to get different shades of magenta-violet. Furthermore, when you use lightly these kind of magenta-violet hues, they will become less UV friendly and will fade less or more eventually, almost no matter what pigment they are made of.
@@OtoKano I've got previous version of this single pigment set. And yes, they released that set after the heavy criticism about the mostly multi-pigmented colours in their collection at that time, which looks like they combined all the single pigmented ones they have in hand. And there was an illustrated mixing instruction leaflet to get the lacking popular colours, by using only the ones available in the set, which are basically the same formulas they used for having their multi-pigmented colours.
I've tried the Burnt Sienna mix (3 pigments) only to see what happens, and I must say it worked very well except the granulation of course. And I had the coolest gray by mixing it with Ultramarine Blue with no mudding at all.
This must be the revised version of the same set. As I see, some colours are replaced with more useful/preferred ones, obviously lead by a further market research. And these colours are likely presented for the first time in this set only . The confusion of pigment information occurs because of the previous, differently manufactured but still available versions of the same colours, and they may be discontinued soon, I guess.
So you are correct to go by what the tube says, as all the info on any particular paint is probably correct per se. By the way, not to confuse anybody anymore but, Permanent Magenta was mislabeled as PR112 on the tube in my set, accidentally I believe, as it is obviously a PR122.

Tao has a video on this. Its a paper sizing issue, meaning it was either sized incorrectly or the sizing has degraded. You can restore it with some watercolour ground.

I have the 17 color set of this mijello pigment watercolors. Now I don't need any other watercolors aside from them.
What other watercolor have you tried? Could you tell me your experience with them? Is their flow a bother? I'd also love to know if they're really worth it or not.. especially since It's cheaper a lot here in my place, $75 for 24+2 set. That's basically $3 for each 15 ml tube!! (didn't include the +2) I really want to get them. They're 15 ml which is A LOT, it can teach me color mixing, save me by a ton, vibrant, great and reasonable price, and so much more. Though, I'm very hesitant because they aren't as "flow-y" as other watercolors. Also, their vibrancy might scare me. I wouldn't want to get sick of them once I try other watercolors that flow more or have more muted colors(?). It'd be a waste of money and it'll just break my heart. Please reply and let me know what you think, thank you! :)
and yes, over all price of paints and shipping fee here is $75. There are more expensive ones, around $77-$85+
What a rediculouse idea - to go through so many 'already proven' colours!!!
