I Nearly PASSED OUT While Working Through An EXCESSIVE HEAT Warning (+100°F)

  • We have been dealing with an excessive heat warning this whole week, and the heat almost stopped me from finishing this sidewalk cleanup. I spotted this overgrown sidewalk while scouting and decided to use my skills and tools to make it clean again. I tried to get there early to beat the heat, but ended up almost passing out due to feeling overheated by the scorching sun & 100 degree temperature. At the end of day 1, I ran out of water and knew it was best to not push through. So I called it quits and returned the next day to finish what was left. Let's just say that day 2 was much more enjoyable, and far less hot because I showed up at around 7 in the morning. I hope the neighbors didn't mind the morning noise. I'm sure they didn't and were thankful for making the community sidewalk clean and safe for the neighborhood.

Thank you so much for taking out that tree. I’m always very distressed when I can’t see the road because of foliage. Especially when I have to creep out into it to see if anything is coming in order to make a turn. If someone is speeding and also can’t see another vehicle because of the foliage, I could still get clipped on my front end. When I did lawn care right out of high school I worked for a small company (under 10 people). The owner had a freezer from the local ice company and had it stocked up at all times, as well as having several skids of water and gatorade on hand and coolers in the trucks. We came in at 530am, had our 15 minute meeting, grabbed some bags of ice and a case of water and gatorade and loaded up. Coolers stayed in the back of the extended truck cab. The owner told us he wanted us to leave the trucks running with the AC on at all times, and that if we felt the slightest bit exhausted or run down. When it was above 90, or had a heat warning, or forecast for a heat index over 95, he called us all back at 1pm for the day. One of the best bosses I have ever worked for. Kept a lot of the same employees for close to 20 years until he passed away a few years ago because he took care of his crew. Take care of yourself. A video or 2 isn't worth getting heatstroke or dying for

Gel neck coolers are great for heat. It's just a little silica gel inside a tube of fabric. The gels stays wet so it cools your neck for longer than a wet bandanna.
The other heat saver is half full frozen (plastic) water bottles. Top up with water and you have ice water that stays cold.
And try linen shirts. Cotton tees hold heat and sweat. Linen breathes and evaporates to keep you cool.

@@Spenfinite You are talking to a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) here who has dealt with many heat illnesses. I know it's not good when people pass out from the heat and we never want that to happen period. However, you want to take in other considerations and factors that can cause people to pass out in the heat from the heat. It is a BIG DIFFERENCE between someone passing out from heat exhaustion vs someone passing out from heat stroke vs someone passing out from dehydration. It is a BIG DIFFERENCE how you treat and how quickly you respond to someone for heat stroke vs heat exhaustion (depending on severity) vs dehydration (depending on severity). The wrong treatment and reaction time can cause the person to lose their life.
When someone passes out from the heat (heat syncope) we want to keep that in mind, but also look for other clues as to what the true cause is, if we can do so while treating them. You also want to keep in mind that there is rhabdomyolysis and hyponatremia that can play a factor.

I feel the City and those neighbors owe you a huge debt of gratitude. It is hotter than hell out there and you are over working yourself to make their area look a million percent better. Please take care of yourself first and foremost. ❤

As a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) who has dealt with heat illnesses, you need to take precautions when working in the heat. Working in the heat can cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of damaged muscle tissues caused by exertion and/or heat stress), heat syncope (fainting from the heat), and/or hyponatremia (water intoxication). Take prevention by staying hydrated (don't over hydrate), taking frequent breaks in a cool environment (out of the heat), wearing well-ventilated clothing, and wearing hat and sunglasses. Know your limits and stop like you did to prevent your condition from worsening.
Your health and well-being are far more important than transforming a yard in high temperatures. It is always best to choose a different day where temperatures are not as high and still take precautions. Love the videos you produce and the work you do for the community, stay safe Fill.

I am bilingual, I speak Spanish, my native tongue, and English fluently and understand and speak very little Italian. I think that being able to speak more than one language is a great asset to anyone. You never know when that second or third language may help someone tremendously.

What i used to do when i worked outside in the heat building decks, we would simply fill 2 liter pop bottles up with water, then toss them in the freezer overnight, then use them to keep lunch / coolers cold and we would have cold lunch / cold water and cold other drinks from the cooler and keeps some electrolyte drinks.
One other thing we kept in our first aid kit was a tube of instant crazy glue, it bonds skin, for the time when you give yourself a nasty cut and need to get it to stop bleeding quick :) doctors will probably hate you for it but it will save yourself in a pinch.

Remember that your health is important and I think you should get yourself a cooling towel and cooling hat. All you do is get them wet, ring out, wear, and remain cool while working out in the heat. You can get them at your local Walmart.
You are a good hearted man and you do fantastic work for I watch your videos all the time. May God bless you every day. Love you.
