How to Make a Behavior Stronger
In this episode, we discuss adding the Three Ds - Distance, Duration, and Distraction. Once a dog has learned a behavior and has it on cue, it's time to make that behavior stronger!
We ask the dog to do the behavior, such as a sit, and click and treat like normal once the dog does it. To extend the duration, count to 1 second in your head, and click and treat again. Repeat a few times at that level and then increase the criteria to 2 seconds, 3 seconds, etc.
This is the same process for adding distance and distractions (as shown in the video.)
We don't want to add more than one D at a time unless one of them as been mastered. I consider mastering about 10 successful trials in a row.

I assume (as you didn't say here), that you use a particular signal to "release" the sit.... I mean _other than_ from probing the dog's limits to maintain the sit. Not releasing him would seem to imply setting him up for "failure". (You might well have addressed this topic elsewhere. I'm a newbie at training. )
