  • An April 2021 post-lockdown update with all the information on the West Highland Way. I spent a lot of time gathering all this information and putting the video together. It would be great to hear your feedback on the video so please comment below and let me know what you agree/disagree on.
    HAVE YOU COMPLETED THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY? Do you want something special for wee reminder of the journey? Here is a link to a wonderful print of Buachaille Etive Mòr, the iconic mountain at the entrance to Glencoe. I took this photo myself (on a separate trip) and currently have it on my wall as a nice reminder of Glencoe:
    www.etsy.com/u...
    The video:
    I completed the West Highland Way in late April, as soon as overnight stays were permitted. The purpose of this video is to highlight the status of the hospitality industry on the West Highland Way, give an overview of the route, and to share my experience of the walk. I tried to include information on as many hotels and services on the route as I could, as well as give general advice. This video should help all people planning to do the West Highland Way, but could be even more beneficial to people wishing to undertake it in the same manner as I did, with a 5-day itinerary and camping. I did not deviate from the West Highland Way on this trip. All towns, pubs, cafes and campsites visited were within a minute of the trail.
    The West Highland Way - 96 Miles (154km)
    Day 1 - Milngavie to Loch Lomond
    Day 2 - Loch Lomond to Beinglas Farm campsite
    Day 3 - Beinglas Farm Campsite to Inveroran (original plan was Bridge of Orchy)
    Day 4 - Inveroran to Kinlochleven
    Day 5 - Kinlochleven to Fort William
    Day 5+1 - Ben Nevis. I decided to do Ben Nevis after the West Highland Way. Please see the link below for the video of this incredible summit experience.
    • Ben Nevis - 2021
    Additional information on kit I used:
    Tent - Wild Country Zephyros Compact 1 - This tent was great. I have used this tent on a few trips and plan on doing a review of this tent after a year of ownership. Subscribe to see this when I release it.
    Camera Gear - I used a GoPro Hero 8 to film most of this video, with some iPhone clips included as well.

    I'm a 63 year old woman from the U.S.A. and have this hike on my bucket list. Training now as I haven't done any long distance hikes. Thank you for your very detailed video. It helped me decide I could do it using hotels on the way. Very good.

      I’m happy it helped you make a few decisions on how you will do the walk. You could definitely do it over a longer period, as well as use hotels/b&bs for accommodation. You could also use one of those luggage deliver services that takes your suitcase to the next hotel for you, so that you only need to walk with the essentials. Hope you make the trip!

Absolutely loved it, I've watched a few WHW videos because me and my girlfriend are doing it in the back end of September and this video I found to be by far the most informative one I've watched. I know this was released a couple of years ago, but thank you for such a great video on the West Highland Way! It's so great to look back on how stunningly beautiful the scenery is all the way through, and your editing and calming voice make it all the better😅!
    I did my walk in April 2022, when I was 18. Had zero experience wildcamping or long distance hiking, but just sorta bought a train ticket (from home in Leicestershire), threw myself into it and had an unforgettable experience. Met some amazing people (who I ended up doing the walk with) and saw scenery that I never thought I'd see!

We were scheduled twice before but cancelled both times due to COVID-19. Traveling from the States we were not sure that we’d make it, and then be able to get back home. We are optimistic about the hike in 6 months. Great vlog thanks for sharing your trip. I did back in May 2017. Loved it. Your 5 stop points made more sense than mine. I was bust after walking into Tyndrum snow was falling (in May) and i stopped at that campsite. I stopped next at Glencoe resort. I can’t believe the resort burnt down. That was another cold night camping around the resort area. Then did over to kinloch and glen nevis in one day. That was a killer. The king house has really changed as used be a pub in the middle of no where with a handful of shabby rooms. Tyndrum to Bridge of ochy was a fav. Not sure I would do again but never say never.

    Loved your style and editing. Thanks. Watched it as I had done the WHW with a friend (my compadre) when I was in my early 20s. I've been out in Brazil for more than 30 years now. Tomorrow two of my sons (who moved to Scotland) will start the WHW and have their own adventure. Weird. Brought a tear to my eye. I wonder if I will ever get to do some of it again (now in my 60s). Beautiful! Life is a journey, the WHW a life in miniature maybe ha ha. Thanks again

      Hi Eric. I'm glad you stumbled across my video and it brought some thoughts and memories into your head. These kind of adventures are the ones that stick in the mind more than anything else. It sounds like the effect of the WHW is still present within you. Now its time for your sons to do it and create their version of memories from their experience. I hope you make it over again to bring back some of the memories. Don't become a stranger to Scotland. All the best. Rory

    Hi Rory Scott, I was happy to watch a video. In 2003 I walked the West Highland Way with two friends ... but only from Balmaha (I don't know why). Many pleasant memories come up. On the way we went to every pub and fortified ourselves with Guinness. Laugh. I don't understand every word you say, but you have a pleasant way of speaking, so that I can understand what you mean. Fantastic video - wish we had vids back in June 1997 when my wife and I did this😂 As an Aussie with the surname McDonell, it was awesome to hike through the land of my ancestors. Even more so to celebrate my birthday in Crianlarich
    20 years later I was lucky enough to get to trek to Everest Base Camp, ticking off my bucket list number one. But I will always cherish the memories of the West Highland Way especially tackling the Devil’s Staircase after a heap of pints at Kingshouse👍🏻 And of course climbing the Ben at the end of the hike

    Very good video. Quality, or sharpness, of the footage is excellent. Was going to ask about the camera, but see it's a Go-Pro. What tripod are you using? Is it one of those Go-Pro 'stick's that turns into a tripod?

    The hardest part is not the descent into Kinlochleven but the ascent, climbing out of Kinlochleven heading to Kinghouse. I've done the WHW both ways. But the hardest part going toward Fort William is Loch Lomond between Inversnaid and Beinglas campsite.

    Best one I’ve seen yet 👍🏻 I’m starting late April next year, going to walk in trail shoes. I have a terra nova laser comp. tent and was thinking of getting the Wild country tent you have as it seems more robust for only a little more weight. Cheers

    • @rory_scott
      @rory_scott  Před 2 lety +2

      Intersting comment. Wild Country is actually Terra Nova, and this tent is branded as a much cheaper option than the laser comp. I think its priced cheap as the material isn't as lightweight.. but I guess you get a thicker, tougher material which could be better for some people. I did think the tent was super small, probably on the limit of a 1 man tent. I feel like I probably wish I had got a bigger tent, with more room to move/chill inside, even if it meant a slightly heavier weigh. There were so many other ways I think I could shed the weight in the pack to make up for it.

    • @rory_scott
      @rory_scott  Před 2 lety

      Yes the best way to prepare is to slowly build your walking. Walk small distances with a little weight and then slowly start to increase distances. I did the WHW in 5 days and it was quite tough, but a way to make it easier is to do it over 6 or 7 days, or more, and also ensure that you're carrying the lightest pack you can. If you're not camping, then it would be possible to carry a very light pack, as you won't need a tent and sleeping and stove etc like I did.
