  • Join me as a fight my midlife crisis and attempt to complete Scotland’s West Highland Way in just four days.
    Powered by fish and chips and an assortment of junk food, I trudge through wind, rain and sun while misnaming and mispronouncing Scottish places...

    How refreshing, a midlife crisis that doesn't involve fast, flashy cars or Hell's Angels type two-wheeled transport.
    I'm glad you not only rose to your personal challenge, achieved it with no small measure of aplomb, but nonchalantly chucked in the ascent of Ben Nevis to boot, having found yourself with a spare day and nothing booked in your social diary.

    Walking, Hiking and camping used to be free in Scotland as passed by the Scottish Parliament until they licenced Loch Lomond and Trossachs Park to charge people for camping in the area they control thus taxing the people of Scotland for the Freedom to Roam, the area they control get's bigger every year. Time it was stopped and give us our right to roam back. Freedom for Indigenous Scots.

I can understand you wanting to challenge yourself .Im walking the Wales Coastal Path and usually set each stage to challenge me and also where its convenient for public transport. I churn out loads of vids but mainly different golf courses so not got time to do much editing. Im drawing the line at the walk past and having to go back and pick it up. I have a wee laugh about that with some other hikers that you tube. I dont climb mountains normally but you have whetted the appetite for Ben Nevis.

    I want to take an extra day in Fort William and make it up Ben Nevis, but I'm really not sure if I can make it after hiking 8 days. So my current plan is to take that extra day, and if the weather permits it, at least make it up to the halfway loch, and then go from there.

    Hey Peter, nice video!
    I’m planning to do the whw next month with a travel buddy of mine. It‘s our first several-day hike and we‘re trying to solve it in about 9 days, but I’m still not sure what kind of shoes to wear tbh. How was your experience with the saucony peregrine? Would you recommend trail running shoes for the whw in general? We‘re wild camping btw, if that makes any difference considering weight etc.

    • @PeterHobleytheOCEnglishman
      @PeterHobleytheOCEnglishman  Před rokem

      Thanks! Obviously shoes are a big issue that'll get you all kinds of answers. Personally, I love lightweight trail shoes over clunky stiff walking boots as they allow my feet to move about and connect better with the trail. Other people would be horrified to hear that and insist you need ankle support (especially if carrying your own pack). However, I have run on trails for a few years and do exercises to strengthen my ankles so haven't experienced any bad twist-overs in a long time.
      That said, trail shoes are definitely up to the job for the WHW's terrain; it's down to your own preference, feet, ability and confidence.
      Best of luck! I hope you have fun. I'm a little jealous :)

      Interesting question and of course everyone’s experience will vary. That said, on this trip I tried both Seal Skinz and regular athletic-type socks.
      The Skinz quickly filled with water anyway but they did keep my feet warm. However, the regular socks would also quickly warm up even after I splashed through puddles or wet grass.
      Basically I found if I kept moving my feet never got cold. Of course, if there was an emergency and I was inactive they’d probably get chilly. I therefore also carried a dry pair if I needed to go into “survival mode.”
