- It is our privilege to present another famous Rhaetian railway to you - The world heritage listed Albula Railway. With it's 55 bridges and 39 tunnels, it is one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railways in the world. The centerpiece is the 5866m long Albula tunnel, which at 1820m above sea level, is the second highest alpine tunnel in Switzerland.
Our journey starts in Chur, the terminus station of the SBB normal gauge line from Zürich.

For someone who likes nature and the mountains in particular, this is like a meditation. Only the tunnels are so narrow that they inspire a slightly claustrophobic feeling.

We were over there riding the RHB for a week. We were in an organized tour, but they have day and weekly passes that I think were reasonable prices. At the time, the Swiss Franc and US dollar were close to on par. Food at coop was reasonable as well. It was worth every penny to travel on that wonderful railroad. Summer was beautiful, too!

Immer wider eine Grossartige Strecke. Ich bin disese Strecke in meiner Jugend sicher 5-6 mal gefahren, als wir damals ins Schullager gefahen sind.
Made that trip , we did every track of the RhB in Graubunden out of Filisur for a week , staying in Hotel Grischuna , was fantastic !!!

644 Savognin is my favourite RhB locomotive - I remember riding behind it when it had the blue Radio Grischa livery ("Unerhört? Unerhört!) and I have the Bemo model of it!
I remember doing this trip 25 years ago on my way to Pontresina when there was a Club Med village. It was such a nice trip and scu a see sight. I had family in Switzerland near Léman lake.

It's 19 years since I made the reverse trip to this. Thank you for the different view. I was intrigued by the dual-gauge exit from Chur, but your caption of the Ems-Werken sent me to Wikipedia, whose information helped me to realise why a standard-gauge connection made sense.

Die Mutter aller Modelleisenbahen! Die Trassierung in diesem schwierigen Gelände - es beginnt schon mit der Verzweigung kurz nach Domat/Ems - ist schon sehr gut gemacht, denn mit Normalspur würde es schon unglaublich aufwendig werden. Besonders eindrucksvoll, wie kurz der Wendetunnel nach Filisur gestaltet werden konnte, weil die Topgraphie des Geländes perfekt ausgenutzt ist.
