  • Thanks for joining us in looking at another of Switzerland's main lines, in amazing weather. This video is a testimony to Swiss engineering, precision & dedication to quality (although many still find enough to complain about, haha).
    This video was reuploaded due to the fact that the original never finished processing to 4K.
    If you watched the recent Geneva - Bern - Zürich trip, we'll be on the same line for the first 43 minutes of the video before turning off towards Lausanne and Bern in Denges-Echandens, only this time with reduced speeds as we're not in a tilt train. The most beautiful part is arguably the section between Lausanne & Palézieux overlooking the lake of Geneva whilst passing through hillsides covered in vineyards and traditional Swiss houses.
    Enjoy the changing scenery as we make our way towards the capital, Bern and enter the station from an uncommon direction for an InterCity train (most trains enter and leave from the same side - Bern used to be a terminus station).
    After Bern we'll hit up the "Bahn 2000" line, the only open track in Switzerland allowing speeds of 200km/h. Our train is the only train on the high speed line to bypass Olten, by taking the route towards Aarburg-Oftringen in Rothrist and then a connecting track to the line Sursee - Luzern, which was famously built during World War II to allow direct trains between Bern and Luzern in the case of an emergency.
    Towards Luzern, some dark storm clouds create a special atmosphere as we approach our final stop. Today's locomotive is an SBB Re 460 "Lok 2000" produced between 1992 - 1996, of which 119 were produced and form the backbone of SBB's standard push-pull long distance rolling stock. They are currently going through a modernisation program to allow a further 20 years of service, including new traction converters, which changes the drive sound. The locomotive we are in today is still in it's original form, meaning you will be hearing the old traction converters working their magic.
    Next to the station names, I’ve included altitude in meters. The maximum allowable speeds are also shown on the bottom right of the screen as they come into effect. On a number of occasions where the speed is limited due to signalling, the signal colours are shown at the top right of the screen. This is to help viewers make sense of the different colour combinations.
    As we pass junctions, I have included purple comments on available videos in the respective directions. These videos are (or will be) linked below for your convenience.
    I have included all gradients I was able to make out for those who are interested. They are shown in the top right corner with a promille value (1/10%), as they are displayed to drivers.

    Don’t get me wrong, the vids of the slower trains are pretty enjoyable too in their own way. But a video like this, where the train is gliding as smoothly as a cloud while barreling along at something like 120+ kph, is just majestic.

    I use(d) to go to Switserland during the summer holidays. With fond memories of stops in Lüzern & Bern, traveling to Engelberg or towards Brig and beyond.
    Traveling between Utrecht CS - Lüzern in the 80s & early 90s. And towards Brig (direct connection or with a stop in Basel SBB) in the years thereafter till a few years back.

    Love these videos as I've been to a number of the places in my travels to Switzerland. A few year ago. I parked up in Prangins and walked to Nyon and have seen much of Lake Geneva. Put the car on a train through the Lotschberg tunnel some years ago and had a Swiss pass when staying at Brig (Brigerbad - Used to look up at the elevated track from the camp site) so did a number of trips then. You've got a superb job in a beautiful country.

    Hello
    That's it, I was finally able to reach Luzern, a very beautiful line and an arrival in this big station. To have visited it during my trip on the Gothard, I found it magnificent and immense, like the traffic elsewhere. Too bad you didn't leave a few minutes on arrival at the platform to see the world get off your train towards this station. I was having a coffee upstairs and when we saw these two-level trains arriving, the number of travelers going down and up. The quick end changes of the old ICM Milan - Zurich in Re 4/4.
    In short, nice video.

    Hi. I really like this one . . . Just want to let you know how great it is for those of us who will never be lucky enough or rich enough (I'm a pensioner) to travel to Switzerland, to be able to sit down in the comfort of one's living room, and ride with the driver of these trains. It means more than I can say. THANK YOU!
    Also, you may or may not be aware of this, but at 1.15.00, the "video" slows down as if it is going to stop and then picks up again. I haven't come across any other glitches in this one as yet and it certainly doesn't detract ... just sayin'.
    I'm really a fan of these "high speed" trains. I don't really like the super-fast ones at all. The speed that this train is moving at is great because you can still appreciate the scenery and you also get that "hit" or thrill from traveling so fast. Amazing that the trains stay on the track! I won't pretend to understand the physics behind it.
    I am amazed at how quiet it is inside the driver's cab. Is it really that quiet? Also, the ride seems so smooth also; like the train is just gliding along barely touching the rails. (1.21.0 and on for a bit is a great example of this.
    All your videos are good Lorirocks ... thanks again. Best, John from Oz

      The slow down was to emphasise the moment a paper wasp hit the windscreen in front of the camera.
      The trains are usually nice and quiet to drive, although new ones can have those horrible high pitched electronics noises.

    I love your videos. Always of such high quality, with just the right information. Bit of a glitch at 1:15:21, though. One question, though. How do you do your maps? I like how you add them in.

      Thanks! It's not a glitch, I slowed the video down where we hit a wasp.
      I make the maps by fading pictures into each other that I've drawn on.

    Excellent cab ride with clear descriptions. When you describe "ancient station" do you mean a " no longer in use" station.

    One of the most beautiful countries on the planet, Switzerland.
    The most peaceful country on the planet, Switzerland.
    The most civilized country on the planet, Switzerland.
    If I was in charge of a country, I would try to make that country as much like Switzerland as possible. (Fun Fact: Switzerland loves firearms as much as The United States and likewise, Swiss citizens have The Right to Bear Arms.)

    I watched every kilometer as usual. Can you explain the Neutral section between Lausanne and Freiburg, with the open and closed circuit? As an engineer/driver in the USA, I am not too familiar with electrified operations and the engineering.

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  Před 3 lety

      Nice to meet you.
      Basically the two sections of track are being fed by 2 different power sources that whose phases are not in sync, which would result in a short circuit if they were connected. The neutral section in the middle solves the problem. The main switch needs to be shut off while passing through.
      Would you be interested in making videos for this channel if I provide you with the gear?

    What does the blue sign with the yellow arrow seen many times on the Bahn 2000 Strecke mean?

    • @AndreiTupolev
      @AndreiTupolev Před 3 lety

      They're block markers in the place of conventional signals on the lines that have in-cab signalling

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev Před 3 lety

    So was that a signal fault at 27:15, or was it to do with work being done on the track? It must have resulted in very nearly a couple of minutes delay!

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  Před 3 lety

      It could be a number of faults, usually the track is occupied in the system, which forces the signal to stay red. The controller goes through a checklist before activating the special signal. The driver checks the tracks and if nothing is there, the track section can be marked as unoccupied in the system.

    This may be a bit controversial, but I'd enjoy it a lot more if the engine noises were filtered out a bit.. I especially noticed it around the 1 hour mark, where it really started to feel unconfortable to listen to...

    Just thinking, does drivers' route knowledge follow the linguistic boundaries? So a German speaking driver will go as far as the German speaking boundary, and then a French speaking driver take over? So I suppose on this route they'd change over at Fribourg?
