    Thank you for sharing your tournament adventure, superb storytelling through the highs, lows, best laid plans, and unforseen hiccups, that had me laughing and groaning in places. Enjoyed seeing the armies, great photos, even that blurred one, my brain automatically saying.. "ah yes, an action shot, excellent". I've had utterly pants games with cascading routs and times when trolls have spent whole games refusing to budge while picking their noses or having a nap. Good luck with the London Legends tournament.

    Lovely to see your beautiful army fielded again, particularly enamoured of the Grail Reliquae which has inspired me to have a go at some modelling (could never afford the model back in the day).
    A brave showing by Chantelle and her retinue, could never make an MSU army work and relied on combat resolution (with perhaps equally ineffective results) to have an impact. Mind you, equipping my knights with rubber lances did not help! I remember many humiliating defeats against a certain Dark Elf army particularly well !
    Good luck with the London Tournament, sadly do not have the stamina required. Thank you for continuing to share the adventures of your noble knights!
    May the Lady continue to bless you Sir Knight!

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před rokem

      The problem MSU has is getting the big wins. Bretonnians are not comped generously enough to try to go for 5 slim wins and a kick up from the comp score. You've got to get big wins really just like other armies, ands against unbreakable and stubborn opposition that's simply noy possible with such an approach.
      Good luck with the Reliquae. I've been enjoying them!

    At 14:19 look at the position of the tomb guard. There is no way for him to charge into the knights legally so that all his models touch the knights, he could only clip with the left most 1-2 models. You can only make a single wheel when charging.

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před 7 měsíci

      Right. However, he could have reformed the TG more carefully the turn prior to have allowed the charge

    • @morgantreeman6872
      @morgantreeman6872 Před 7 měsíci

      @@DrBlaxill you are correct, looking at 13:15. You can see that in that position, it is possible. The TG's position changes by mistake after you removed the hill. Also, I don't know about 8th edition but in 9th Age after a combat you can perform a post combat-pivot or a post combat reform. With the post-combat pivot they can only pivot about the centre. If they reform then they can't score or charge in the next player turn.

      Wood Elves. I have painted about 25 archers and 10 scouts.

    Thanks for the game! You definitely earned that win, I’m a pretty new player (only second tournament) so seeing a different list piloted really well was a really inspiring and eye opening game. Apologies for the slightly generic dark elf list, thought I’d go hard on something a bit more sweaty this time around to get it out of my system after a 0-5 with my skaven last year, keen to try some more different and interesting lists going forward though.

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před rokem +1

      I used a very generic warriors of chaos list for 2 years or more when i started gaming, but it was comped quite hard (similar to yours). I found in time I did as well with a -1 or -2 list with a few changes as I gained experience. But with warriors, and I expect delves, you will probably end up with a minus list overall however you skin it. Experimentation is so much fun at the beginning but I definitely recommend a harder list for a new plater.
      Amusingly one modification I did mak4 was use thr 3++ disc lord (Generic chaos strong thing) without his ward save on closed list events. People just assumed he was the uber build and reacted accordingly - I.e. never attacked him- when he was actually a phoney!

  • @jagowestaway2503
    @jagowestaway2503 Před rokem +1

    Excellent video as always! I'm presently playing in an ongoing campaign with some very competitive players; it allows Warhammer Armies Project's 8th edition books, so I'm playing as Araby, one of the weaker armies with excellent manoeuvre capabilities but not much else - seeing you play in a very similar position and still do very well warmed the cockles of my heart! The... variant character name pronunciations (and epithets in Morathi's case) always get a laugh too.
    One question: how do you actually compose these reports? They always have so much detail that it seems difficult to believe you do it all from photos and memory, but I can't imagine there's much time for note-takibg during a game?

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před rokem

      Thanks. Araby sounds pretty cool- movement based armies are my favourite, as for me its the fun of playing more than the list building aspect I enjoy.
      Reports are done by taking photos during the game of the key moments and piecing them back together afterwards. I will try and recall what happened in each turn from the photos then write it down in basic notation before dictation. Of course, I have to do that quite soon after the game (at least to get to note form) or otherwise I'll forget. With normal 'friendly' battle reports this is much easier as there isn't a time limit and it's only a single game. These tournament style ones with 5 games in a weekend are slightly harder to do that with though- especially when it gets tight/rushed and I'm playing with an unforgiving army anyway. No doubt I miss things, but the key moments are all in there even with tournement style ones. I do think that with a series of photos it's easier than one might think to recall afterwards, and the broad story of the game and why it unfolded as it did I tend to remember quite well. Perhaps that's just me, but find I warhammer inherently quite memorable compared to all other games I've played, and somehow games played physically (especially one off ones or ones I played in a place I hadn't been before or against a new opponent) do tend stick in the mind!

    • @jagowestaway2503
      @jagowestaway2503 Před rokem

      @DrBlaxill Araby is wonderful fun to play - lots of funny little tricks. One of the more interesting Armies Project armies. Hard to find the 8th ed version now, and even their unofficial 9th Ed has just been nuked by GW, but I've got all the 8e stuff downloaded and it adds a lot of interest to be able to play as some of the setting's minor factions like hobgoblins, Estalia, Albion, Fimir etc.
      You're quite right about in-person warhammer being very memorable, too, especially I guess if you have so many photos to serve as references. Still impressive how vividly you can recall it, but maybe my take-away here is that I should start writing more of my games up as Battle Reports!

The monks are from gripping beast and one other manufacturer (again I could find precise references if you want them)

    As always, thanks for this top-grade battlereporting. It actually motivated me to try it too, I will have a game later today that I will try to turn into one myself.
    After the first game: the Khemri seem overcorrected.
    Second game: I think this is a good example of how gold luck in one side can negate luck in the other. Your good charges were completely ruined by the dark elves equally good counter roles.
    Third game: seems like the final charges were a bit too greedy. Doable, but maybe a bit too much.
    Fourth: loved the cauldron charge.^^
    Fifth: And here I feel Tomb Kings would be better with the Vampire marching rules or their old spell casting back.
    What you played is called the Royal Airforce over here and is considered a rather strong, though tough to play, list. I sometimes play an Empire variant of it. Had a similar game to your second game against a Dark Elf a while ago. Very fun one, lots of tricky movement.
    Anyway, thanks for the reports and maybe I can fly over for your tournament next year.^^

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před rokem +1

      That's really interesting- royal airforce. Lots of Peg heroes and heavy cavalry. I can see how empire would work woth demis too. Dark Elves probably strongest though as they can get 1+ armour save on the peg master. The bret one is only 3+ generically.
      I will probably try a similar list again. It's fun to play but quite matchup dependent.

Tress of Isoulde and Virtue of Knightly Temper total 60 points as far as I remember, so these couldn't be taken on a Paladin and I can't see how a lord was afforded with the Green Knight and Chantelle.

    • @Svain5
      @Svain5 Před rokem

      If this tournament is using the Triple Crown rules, then Bretonnian Lords can take a Virtue at no pints limit and Paladins can take up to 50AP of Virtues on top of their magic items.

    Always a joy to see your models, so this is once more very much appreciated!
    Commenting on the games as they come, a bit down below to not spoil it for others:
    1. Damn that first game was brutal at the start! Whatever cursed frog your Brets had for breakfast, it definitely screwed them up. Feels like you came out of it really well given that rough first turn.
    2. First things first: that single CO is a travesty indeed - but for a different reason! I think IF one goes for such a gamey thing, the model could at least be PROPER: just taking a regular CO (with saddle!) looks so weird and... just wrong. Not a fan, not a fan at all. No offense towards the player of course, just a question of taste for me.
    Good game overall, with some bad luck and spectacular moments again.
    3. That moment when you describe the opposing list and I think "what the hell have you done to the gods of propability to deserve this?"
    And holy heavens did you get served again... bloody hell!
    4. Brilliant game, with a result that indeed does not tell the story of the events. Congrats to some serious luck there!
    5. Good game again, without any disasters for a change. XD
    An overall good showing, with a respectable result indeed. Kudos for fielding an underdog army, and double so for going even more against "conventional wisdom" with a different approach to the list. Interesting to see how it worked, if not so stellar in the end.
    Many thanks for your detailed documentation, I really enjoy your take on battle reports and retelling the flow of your games. I hope for many more of these to come, and already look forward to the upcoming London Legends!

      Thanks for such an extended comment. Yes, the more I think of it the more I am tempted to conclude these five games were not very typical. Having played with this list in perhaps 10 warmup games against very strong players I think I only lost three, and by very small margins. The problem was more that I didn't ever win big. I thought that experience would be what would happen at the tournament, but it ended up not playing out that way at all given the matchups. I'd love to try it again I must admit... however I think my next tournament BR will be chaos (which I like a lot although find slightly less interesting to play than the Brets as they don't have the challenge factor).
