I lived here in 1969 till 1974. Coalbrook was in three parts ie North, South and the migrate compound. I lived in the south part there were about 100 family homes and a bording house. The kids (that would be me) were bused into school every weekday at 7.30am. picking up children on the way from north and a couple of farms along the way. I went to Taaibos High School which was a English and Afrikaans mixed but English classes stoped at STD 5
We had no TV yet in SA so you would think we would be bored silly. The center of the communtiy was the recreation hall which showed 2 movies a week, had bingo, disco and dance nights. There was a large swimming pool, 3 tennis courts,a couple of bowling greens a rugby field which doubled as a soccer field and a badly maintained cricket pitch. While there I learned to swim, ride a bike and learn to drive.
Every month my mum went to the OK in Sasolburg to buy a months shoppng which was delivered the next day
Watching your video i couldn't reconise anything, it is so sad but thanks for posting

Thank you so much for taking time to watch the first video that I ever created for my CZcams channel. While doing some research on the Coalbrook Mining Disaster, I realized that there was so much history lost through the last few decades, which not only involved the Mining Disaster, but the actual communities impacted and scarred by the terrible events, and subsequent falling away of the community over the few decades following the 1960 disaster.
I tried to document what is left of this once thriving community, and I could not help but feel sad and moved by the events that occurred, and the mark that it left. Today only ruins remain, and most people don't have the slightest idea of what once existed in this area...
So I want to say thank you for sharing your personal account of the history of Coalbrook, your comment and support is highly appreciated. Stay safe, and God bless!!

Howzit.. I think it is alright to walk around there as far as I know there are no sinkholes out there and the miners lived there until + - the power station closed down and yes the bosses Mine Captain lived in the bigger houses. In the middle of where the houses were built was a small grass area there was a swing ,slide and so on for the kids to play on if I can recall one of the fathers had built a big zib line (foefie slide)there used to be big trees to. The old building at 28.39 was the Church and school before Taaibos was built I was in Taaibos school and my Sub A & B (today known as grade 1 & 2) teacher she was a dear old lady she was a school teacher there when it was still open the building is built on a farmers land (farm house next to the old building) and his daughter were school friends (not going to say there name online)

Thanks for sharing the info, we struggled to find solid info on this place's history. We found a few conflicting reports, and also had to go on a bit of hearsay, but we wanted to share the general story before it is completely forgotten...
This was my very first attempt at making a CZcams video, and also the first step in becoming a content creator, so it is a huge compliment that you watched this episode.
Thanks so much for the support, it is greatly appreciated.

Just for kicks ... When I was reading about Taaiboschspruit school I remember something and The sandstone that was used for the for the school. I did not know... but I did know about was that some of the sandstone was out of the Meulsteenpan was used in the building of the Union Building in Pretoia. The Meulsteenpan is between Sasolburg and Taaibos (Kragbron) Power Station next to R82 and R549 So if you feel lucky you can go to the pan one day pick up a stone there and you will have a peace of history in your hand
