The LT6 Tick .. Could this spell Disaster for C8 Z06 owners?

  • I give you my thoughts on a recent article that was put out on Corvette Blogger regarding a peculiar ticking sound coming from the top of the LT6 engine found in the brand new 2023 Corvette Z06. This high output, high revving monster is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever put in a production car but is there a hidden issue that no one saw coming? Does this sound spell disaster for Z06 owners or is this normal?

    Most people aren't used to hearing solid lifter valve trains, I'm a little older and have run them in the past, normally have a little of that ticking going on....my Z06 has 500 miles on it and ticks at idle. I'm doing first oil change now, then again at 1000 miles. I'm sending oil out to be checked. I won't run hard until I'm over 1000 miles. We'll see what happens but I'm not worried at all. Engine was built by Kaleb Dudley, so if anything happens I'm going to go looking for him lol... peace

I have the original clutch. The cel has never came on. From day one I ran Royal Purple. So that too might be a plus too. And yes… I have beat on it. I don’t know how many broad ways second gear tire screechers I have done. Too many to count. I ran it at ZMax in Concord NC many times. Best time was 13.4 at 106 mph. It’s on CZcams video. So yeah. It’s race technology, that should be left at the racetrack. It’s a great idea in theory, but why copy Ferrari, at the price they are selling them at, after the Stealership Corvette Tax, you are looking at Ferrari Price anyways, just go buy one, they do it better then anyone else. The C8 is an amazing car in Stingray form. Great American Style V8 that gets it done and at a base price most Americans can afford or stretch to afford if they really wanted one. I don’t know who Detroit is building cars for anymore!?!?!? The majority of America cannot afford them. Even a Mustang 5.0 is over 50k nicely equipped. If these companies would get their head out of their asses and go back in history and follow the Teachings of Lee Iacocca, they could come up with a set of cheaper, fun vehicles for the masses and they would sell all they could build. 20 years ago you could buy a brand new full size well appointed truck or daily vehicle and a fun car like a Mustang, F Body or even a C5 they were 39k base price! Yet they make billions and offer 15k profit sharing and how many billions in upper management bonuses. They have no vision anymore, they are not car people, they are degree holders!!! People want fun cars and trucks they can afford, where’s the C8 SS with a 2.7 High Output truck engine making 380hp priced at 45k that normal avg people can buy. It would be perfect!!! Most guys take them for ice cream and their kids and grand kids for rides in them and out for occasional drives anyways. Not everyone needs a Nuremberg-ring ready car to drive down the street at 45mph. Very few are actually being used as designed. And most will never be. Build Cars and Trucks America Can Afford. They are all guilty of it… it’s not just GM. Ford and Stellantis is doing the same things..

  • @JKim-hb5ry
    @JKim-hb5ry Před 10 dny

    This is an engine that most Americans are not used to seeing on American cars as a V8. Dual overhead cams with no lifters. Instead, splid cam seats that are in direct contact with the cam lobes. 4 cams on top with dual springs, and 4 valves per cylinder Vs. 1 cam down below the engine compartment with 2 valves per cylinder . This engine is going to make more noise than a typ. Push rod engine. Also, the valvetrains are much better lubricated than the c8 LT-2 engine due to high reving on the z06, LT-6. It's normal for a v8 Dual o.h. cam engine that has a lot more moving parts on top. Not to mention the cam drive chains.
    However, lubrication might be an issue. I currently have a c8. On my second oil change, I used a Purolator oil filter with a punched metal inner core as opposed to a GM oil filter with a more free flowing plastic inner core. With a Purolator, I was hearing a little more engine valvetrain noise. The 3rd. Oil change with a GM oil filter that has a plastic inner core that was providing better oil flow from the filter has eliminated the valvetrain noise. If this engine is using an aftermarket oil filter, I would go back to the oem filter. On this engine, oil starvation is a major issue. Especially with high revs and more moving parts than a typical push rod engine like the c8.

    I wonder if due to the specification of the engine it’s causing issues in production. Part of me thinks that’s just how the engine sounds but it really should be super smooth with this engine having zero gaps or anything. I forgot what it is but I think the z06 engine has zero margin for error and even .0001 mm off and something will go wrong but I think that’s what allowed them to produce so much power cuz it’s a well built balanced engine. It just seems like Chevy is trying too complex of an engine for the factory to assemble with the strict strict tolerances. I believe things this thing does like an 11.5-12.5 compression ratio so it can’t be half assed together or these things happen.

    I would immediately change the oil and send an old oil sample out for testing to see if it's out of spec and check for any metal in the oil. Also, I would use a stethoscope to see if the ticking is in a specific location or a specific lifter. Finally I would check compression on each cylinder. These are all basic things that a decent mechanic can do and it's where they should start. I've done detailed research on this engine and it's hand built and natural aspirated and overall a beautiful piece of work. But like any engine if it's either mistreated or the assembler had a bad day something can go wrong. I don't foresee the specific engine as a time bomb.

    This motor have self adjustable valves every second it makes necessary changes. It can’t be boosted or turned because it at the peak of limits. Really shouldn’t be changing the exhaust because of the pressure of the engine. Unless you want to blow up. GT 350 was like that for the 2015 to 2017. Burning oil and blowing piston in 6 or 8 cylinder. 2018 Ford had fixed the problem.

    Pretty much like other GM LS engines, the 5.3 has a known tick issue, and the disasterous LS7 issues. I'm sure GM won't do anything about it per past response.

    This problem is not dedicated just to the 5.5 my Stingray 6.2 also had the same noise..took it to the dealership..it took3 months and 2 days. But motor was changed out..the could not find out what was going on..and like u said no engine codes no performance issues just that annoying sound for a car over 100k..can't do it..new motor has a little ticking noise but goes away after car warms up..

    Dual over head cam lifters can still fall and in fact I do see it often as I am a tech for a dodge dealership. The 3.6l v6 has the problem all the time. You don’t really hear any ticking from it but they do fail so I can believe it. Or I also can believe that it could just be really loud injectors but I don’t believe that is the case here

    What’s the latest with the LT6 ticking noise? Is it still being investigated? Or have they found a fix for it? Is it just on a small % of LT6 or do most of them have the engine problem? A friend’s allocation is coming up and I am worried since it’s way over his budget and if he gets the ticking problem then it would be a disaster for him. Should I tell him to wait a few months to see how GM handles the problem or? Thanks for your help.

      All these people buying cars "way over their budget" like you say are gonna be in for a rough surprise when the recession truly kicks in and companies start layoffs. Even if a recession doesn't happen, inflation will keep increasing all the other costs besides their car payment such as insurance, oil changes, and maintenance stuff (or potential repairs) and eventually they will be forced to sell the car for a loss in the future making it even worse for themselves.

    All the above could be an exhaust leak solid lifters need to be adjusted at operating temperature could be something simple but by the way you described this as a race engine I am betting it is something simple but Chevy hasn't really built much in the European track market following their blue print Chevy has used the muscle car plan which has served them right since 1952 but this is a new territory for them hopefully it doesn't go the way of the Olds diesel.

    A solid lifter engine tends to make more noise than a hydraulic lifter, which has been the standard for decades. Should we re-tune our ears? The LT6 being a brand new design, only time will tell if it’s a terminal design flaw, hopefully not.

    The valvetrain camshaft follower rocker pivots are a solid custom set to a specific lash by the builder and is not adjustable in an ordinary fashion. Porsche uses a similar setup (set for life) on their 9,000 RPM GT3 engines. The camshafts, followers and lash need to be checked cold and at operating temperature to establish if there is an actual problem and GM is going need to send someone who builds these engines to do that.
