Steam in Colombia - Bogotá 2015

  • Very little of the Colombian Railways is left nowadays. Fortunately one survives, in the form of a tourist operation taking people (mostly locals) from the Sabana station in Bogotá to the Salt Cathedral in Zaquapira. Four steam locomotives are serviceable and were steamed especially for us. Most of this video was made along the former North-Eastern Railway up to the small city of Gachancipa. A good part of this line is no longer in use nowadays. A tour by Railway Touring Company. See also: www.turistren.com.co/

I just happened on this video clip. This has done more in 10 minutes to promote Columbia positively than anything else. Congratulations and thanks to those of "Turistren" who have restored, maintained and run this enterprise. The engines and trains look lovely and clean and not gaudy. Love the smoke effects arranged for the run past photographers and some sequences that show the black smoke was not common and had to be achieved by driver shutting off steam. I have never considerred ever visiting Columbia (due to bad press and image) but will certainly be looking to put this train journey on my bucket list.

In case of an accident, you can be sure to get fresh steak for dinner. To be noted, on the first part of the video, the train was running on a disused track, such that no one was really expecting us. So we found on the track not only pedestrians, but also cars, cows and sheeps. With a significant delay at the end of the day.
