    My first instructor had polio when he was a kid. Showing my age here I guess. He would shimmy through the shop on his half crutches checking out all the new kids. He shook all the time like he had severe Parkinson's as well. I was having difficulty gas welding as I was a newb myself. He stopped, managed to get some goggles onto his head, banged everything around on the table and then proceeded to lay down the most beautiful and steady handed weld I've ever seen. Then he flipped the goggles off, started shaking again and said, "so that's how you do it". Hahaa! I was literally schooled that day by one of the best. They don't make guys like that anymore. R.I.P. my friend.

We do hundreds of these vertical-up stringers at work, and this is the way we do it, works great. 350 IPM and 24.7 volts works fantastic for us, .045" of course. +Kyle Montagne I agree, I think welders that can be so humble and keep a open mind of how to do something different are the best. Welders are proud, but there are more than one way to skin a cat, and even though they may choose not to adopt a new way, I appreciate those that will listen and learn it still.

  • @povlhalberg5361
    @povlhalberg5361 Před 8 lety +1

    I weld with this type every day, and I agree on no manipulation on the electrode for the first stringer. Second pass can go with some side to side motion as a cover weld
    A steady hand, slow travel upwards and work is done. If the bevel is uneven, just go a little slow and it will fill up the weld.
    One final notice, pay attention to start and stop, you might get small hydrogen cracks in the puddle if your machine does not have slope down. It will show in the NDT.
    You can overcome cracks by a gentle grinding at the stopping point. Or 'blink' the welding a few times while it is red hot.
    Have a nice day to all metalworkers .
    Welder for many years in fabrication and repair.

I turned it down a bit to run a vertical weld. But just like for you I turned it up and got better results around 24-27 volts vs the 19-22 I was trying to run a d getting sloppy cold looking weaker welds and a ton of frustration too as a matter of fact but it's nice seeing it done this way with alittle more knowledge than I have thanks we all appreciate it!

    Dual shield flux core and self shielded flux core actually benefit from a longer stick out. 3/4”-1” even as much as 1-1/4” stick out. If changing position ie around a flange or pipe, it helps prevent worm tracks. Longer stick out also allows the wire to preheat enough before burning off.

    Closer to hot is better. You should see a arc much like spray-arc or pulse. That arc that looks like a broom on the end of the wire. Flux-core duel shield is what we primarily use on our repair shop for the Union Pacific Railroad. I love pulse-arc but most companies do not buy the extra card that goes in the slot of our Miller mig welders. I use pulse a lot on things like torpido to the pressure hull at Elect Boat.

    Very informative! I have never used dual shield flux core in my 30+ years tenure, but have often wondered about it's benefits. My question is: Would this be the way to go when welding outdoors in windy conditions? I have fought with the wind for years as have many others I know. They have tried this with varying degrees of success, but maybe they just never had the machine set up properly...?

    honestly, not saying your settings or wrong or anything, i just tend to like to have lower wire speed than what you're using, i love to have the feeling of welding in spray with flux core in any position, and it passes xray all day long (usually running 27V 300-310 wire speed)
