  • Beginner lesson in hat making with this fleece headband and scarf neck warmer set DIY. Easy and fabulous headband and scarf set made from cosy polar fleece fabric. Cooler weather climates require some warm headwear choices for part of the year and here in Canada we are sort of specialists to this calling!
    This project, an original design by Mad Cap Hats's Tori Capes, Certified Milliner, takes two simple rectangle shapes of medium weight polar fleece and turns them into comfortable warm and flattering fashion accessories! Make yourself a cosy warm fleece headband and matching neckwarmer scarf. These are both easy beginner level sewing projects and I offer ways to level up the design with some trimming ideas as well.
    If you have a larger or smaller then average head size you may need to adjust the length the headband rectangle. For the average woman's head size of 22.5 inches or 57.5 cm, I used a length that is .5 inches less then average, or 22 inches or 56 cm to start. There are three seams of sewing in the headband so the result reduces the stretch but still gives a very comfortable fit. Adjust as you need.
    For the neckwarmer, the depth of the finished piece around your neck can be adjusted with a hem or by making the cuff deeper then 4 inches or 10 cm. You can also leave part of the back seam open at the bottom to widen the bottom edge.
    We have made 1000s of headbands at Mad Cap Hats, lots of them requiring the use of serger to maintain the stretch of the fabric. This headband does not use the serger so that is why we start off with a piece of fabric that is almost our head size. As the lessons continue we will have a couple of other headbands suggestions using winter fabrics coming up that require a serger but this is our basic and it is an excellent headband to make and wear and love!

    I love the idea of the elastic cord and how you open the seam. I’m going to make this since I have a lot of fleece that I purchased on sale. Thanks ❤❤

    I am really enjoying your videos. I have had zero luck finding attractive warm winer hats locally. All hats sold here are the beanie/ stocking kind. I will use your instructions to make warm hats to wear on my morning walks. Thank you for sharing.

    I have some fleece and it seems thicker than 'most' fleece. It should make for a warm headwrap. You make it look so easy. Where did you get that fabric guider so you sew straight seams? Thanks for teaching me.

      If you have a metal plate on your machine you can buy a magnet at your local hardware store. Otherwise search magnetic sewing guide on Amazon! I love mine!. I have a few of them now. I got mine at General Industrial Sewing Machine in Toronto Ontario Canada! Thanks for the kind words and good luck with your sewing! Keep us posted!

    I just found your channel a few days ago and I am watching so many of them. You are very talented. I do have a question: when sewing the tie on do you sew it directly centered on the front from the seam in the back?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 11 měsíci +1

      You can place the tie in the front center which would make it sit nicely under a jacket and for the band, a bit off center I think adds a nice flare!! Good luck and let us know how it goes!! Tori (thanks so much for the lovely compliment too!! )

      That you. I am happy I found this tutorial so I can keep my head warm this winter. The only problem I have is how to sew the headband. I don't know if it's the colour of the fabric or the lighting that's making it difficult to sew it.
