Sewing Business Winner - Turning Squares of Fabric into $$$
You can make some great accessories for yourself, family and friends or for your small business with simple squares of fabric. We will make cotton napkins and bandanas in this video. We used fabric squares in various sizes to make pet bandanas in earlier videos on the channel.
Find the pet bandana video here - czcams.com/video/ZL8I6yo4xZU/video.html
We will redo the Knit Bandana video with the knit fabrics to make a stretchy headband that covers the head like a bandana - The orginal knit bandana video is here - czcams.com/video/ljXSRUf6hjw/video.html
I show you two ways to finish the edge of your cotton to make napkins and bandanas. The first is the serged edge. You will want to use a serger that can do a narrow edge stitch and if you can adjust the length of the stitch you can get that tight full looking finish like mine in the video. This type of machine may be on your wish list for now so I go over how to make a hemmed edge with mitred corners using your sewing machine.
Industry average finished size of a square napkin is 18 inches by 18 inches or 46 cm x 46 cm. You can use these methods to make tea towels by changing the dimensions to a rectangle shape of your choosing.
Head bandanas can be made smaller and larger depending on the head size but average finished square is 22 inches by 22 inches or 56 cm by 56 cm and then folded on the diagonal so the bias goes around your head.
I use quilting cottons for these projects and there are so many cottons in this family to choose from you can really have lots of fun. The napkins are great for holiday gifts ... themes for Christmas and Easter and Thanksgiving and Halloween are all such winners. The napkins and the packaging lesson towards the end make an easy product to ship. Great for your Etsy shop!

I use Canva to create my napkin artwork. I use the paper layout as landscape and trim any extra centering the seam at the back of the napkin group. I suggest that the longer sheets, the legal size in North America, works best giving enough paper in the landscape format to wrap around 4 napkins with ease. Check out Canva at www.canva.com

      Krista I used a straight stitch as most of the sewing is just a seam straight up the back or near the top edge so there is really nothing preventing stretch around the head. Hope that helps! Tori

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats Před 26 dny

      @@kerryhorwitz4093 that is what a hat size is. Makes sense and if I was making you a hat I would know how big it would need to be if you told me that you had a hat that fits you and inside that hat it said 7 1/4 for example. I would know that your head was 22.5 inches around your head, above your ears and across your forehead. The finished band would need to be at least that long around your head to fit comfortably . Just an interesting fact about the business of hats and hat making. Pi is 3.14 for sake of hat making and hat size. Now you know!

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats Před 28 dny

      The parts that wrap on the head are best cut with the stretch being the part wrapping around the head. • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats Před měsícem

      I am not sure why but sometimes I have to flip over the layers with some fabrics in order to ease the two pieces together. It might be tension as well so depending on your final fit you may need to shorten or lengthen one of those pieces to work with your machine. I find that with mine too. I have to put the piece that needs help fitting in on top or right under the foot. The bottom piece is usually the one with the most sewing already and therefore that won't stretch as I am easing in. So glad you figured it out!! Cheers, Tori

    I like how professionally done these are. I'm having trouble with a finished edge at the top. My serger isn't easy and I dont have a nice looking seam. Zigzag stitch definitely didn't cut it either. What else might work?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats Před měsícem

      Hi Linda ... I actually finish the edge with the serger but I don't use the blades. Basically just using an overlock to close the raw edges ... you can try some pinking shears if the seams seem likely to fray. If the hat is just for you, then trim a neat finish, to about 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch from the seam and enjoy! IF you were selling these, I would suggest investing in a proper industrial serger when you can afford it and plan to sell lots of hats. One that can handle the layers with a good feed dog.

    Hi, I'm new. I opted for the free pattern. I wasn't sure about the weight of the stabilizer and got a 2 sided fusible piece of pellon 72F. I'm thinking its too thick to use 3 layers of interfacing so I'm experimenting with just using the fusible thick piece. My plan is to trim the interfacing before bonding so the seam allowance is just the fabric. What do you think? Also, did you notch the outer edge seam of the brim before you serged it? Thanks for your help, your instructions are clear, but I'm always experimenting!!!

      Hi Patty ... did you finish a hat? I use medium weight one side fusible and I use the two sided when I do a hat like the sunblocker where I would add a trim to the edge. Hope your's worked out! Cheers, Tori

      @@madcaphats I have made 3 hats. The free pattern is big on me. I chose a decor type fabric for both sides and found it very difficult to “ease” the top pieces without a lot of ripping & cursing. The 2nd hat I didn’t use the additional stiffener and it was fine with the decor fabric. The shape of the top was what I would call “puffy”. Perhaps because it was too big. I’m not complaining, just reporting. I like your construction and will sample more hats.

    Hello! I'm a bit new to sewing. I tired following the free template but my band and the top aren't the same length is that how it's supposed to be? When I line up the seem with the notch the back corner of the band can't reach the back corner of the top when I lay them out, is that how it's supposed to be?

    What an excellent tutorial ❤ My instinct has been to sew on the crown/top before the brim - it seems more intuitive to 'complete' the top of the hat separately. By sewing the band to the brim first, the way you do, there's much more room to manoeuvre and get it lined up exactly. I'm going to make some of these without the lace band, so am wondering what to use instead for a more masculine look? Maybe a casing channel to accommodate some wide elastic??

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats Před 2 měsíci

      Take a look as some of the sporty fedoras on the market and go from there. You can make the hat and then add something at the bottom of the band that will fit over top of the bottom the band. The first one is a learning hat so work out your system and then go for it with number two!! Keep us posted! Thanks for watching and the best of luck! Cheers, Tori

      @@madcaphats That's very encouraging, thank you. I will do. Good advice about the first one being a learning experience; it's easy to get disheartened if you make a mistake or it's a bit wonky on the first attempt.
