  • Step by step tutorial about how to make one of our favorite cap designs over here at Mad Cap Hats headquarters in Canada. Hello everyone all over the world who loves hats and making hats as much as we do! There are alot of you!
    Links to the PDF patterns (the free pattern and the full nominal fee pattern) are on our website here ... madcaphats.com...
    You can purchase our sewing patterns from Etsy as well. Our Etsy shop is here ... madcaphats.ets...
    This cap can feature a mix of fabric possibilities but the basic pieces touching your skin should be made from soft and cosy Polar Fleece fabric. Use medium weight woolen fabric that is stretchy on the bias to make the other pieces of the cap and mix and match to create a fun flower pin that ties all your choices together.
    I will also show you how to use a Cricut Hat Press Form to finish your hat by steaming your finished cap from the top and visor creating a smooth and rounded finish.
    You can purchase your own Cricut Hat Press, which goes on sale quite often and can be further reduced in price by signing up for their newsletter, from the link on our website here ...madcaphats.com... for from the Cricut site here .... cricut.pxf.io/...
    There is a matching Rosie Hat that has a full bucket style brim that will be featured in a separate video with a bucket style narrow brim that goes all around the band to form a hat rather than a cap. When the HAT video can be seen here ... • The Rosie Bucket Hat: ...
    This video is about the Cap version of the pattern.
    The Rosie Cap has a broad visor that wraps around the cap almost to the center back. This is an easy pattern to make. If you are a beginner, just take your time and make the pieces as I do in the video. Experienced sewers may want to cut and sew the pieces in a different order than the video and that is great too!
    The pattern pieces and the settings for your printer receiving the pattern are the most important things along with the quality of your fabric. Buy nice fleece for this. With a rich feel and nice body. Nothing see through or thin. If you use thin fabric that is stretchy, we recommend backing it with a piece of polar fleece to give it body and weight.
    Also, make sure you check the measuring lines when you print page one of the actual pattern. Your printer should be set for PDF at Actual Size or at Custom Size 100%. The pages are set up to work on both Letter and A4 printers and paper.
    We use the Sizzix Big Shot to cut the flowers for our pin.
    The Flower Dies I used are ... the largest flower is taken from the die called Flowers & Vine #4, code 659810 and the two smaller flowers are from die code 659789.
    You can buy directly from Sizzix from the link on our webpage ... madcaphats.com... or from the Sizzix site directly here ... shrsl.com/4avmf
    Links to the supplies used in this video are on a page on our website that is just about this Cap and the matching Hat patterns. The page is here ... madcaphats.com...

    I made it! I got a little lost, at first, with attaching the lining, but I think I was just too tired for it, so I put it down. It made much more sense the next day. A couple of times, the layers of fleece, at the seams, were a little challenging for my old machine, but we powered through. It's not perfect, but I think it's very good, all things considered. I'm so happy with it, and I'll be making another soon. Really soon, actually, for a gift. I sure hope she likes it, because I'm really going to enjoy making it. There will definitely be more Mad Cap Hat patterns made in my future. 🙂

    It would help on the pattern to specify how many pieces to cut
    ie Cut 1 or cut 2
    I mistakenly cut 2 pieces of each piece and was confused initially until I watched the video several times and realized I only needed one piece of fabric for each piece of the hat !

      Thank you Jill ... I will pass that on to the digitizer. I expect the folks sewing the patterns to watch the video ... kind of like me being in the room with you showing you what to do in close up rather than relying on just writting things down. You can also watch our videos with the subtitles on if you prefer reading instructions. I am trying to do the best for sewers of all skill levels and those who might not speak English. My audience is worldwide and our pattern sales are from every corner of the world!! Thanks so much for watching, much appreciated! Your second cap will be a breeze to make by comparison. Took me 37 years of sewing hats over and over again to get to the point where drafting patterns for others to make is easy. By comparison, think of the time and money you are saving by just watching the how to video a few times!! When I am making these patterns and working with a computer digitizer to deliver them to you, free of charge in most cases, I just have to assume that sewers have watched the video before the cutting any fabric or downloading the pattern. Love your hat making videos. I needed & wanted to make a new hat for the MN winters and was planing on making your Winter Fashion Cap, but your new video of the Rosie Cap showed up on my YT feed. I love the Rosie Cap! Question: For the top stitching, what length do you use? Thank you.

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 9 měsíci

      I use a stitch lenght that is slightly longer than the average. Inbetween 3.5 or 4. Sometime if the fabric is thick I will adjust so the feed dog can handle it better. Experiment with some scraps on your machine first to see what looks nice with your equipment. The Rosie Cap will morph into the Rosie Hat which has a bucket brim with the back of the brim downward sloping to extend the depth at the back. Just finishign that video now! Love Minnesota ... used to live north of Duluth in my younger days outside of Thunder Bay, ON. For fun we would go to "The Flame" in International Falls. Oh youth!!

    I have the pattern, and I've just cut it all out. So excited to think I might have a new hat by the end of the weekend (if time allows). Very easy to put the pages together and cut out the pattern. I did get curious, however, while I was cutting it out. Is there a reason why the liner and upper and lower bands are full pieces and not cut on the fold. Can they be halved and cut on the fold? Not doing that with the top and visor makes total sense to me, but I'm still fairly new to sewing, so wondering if there's a nuance to this that I might be missing. Thanks so much! I'll be back to give this video some more views soon! 🙂

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 9 měsíci +2

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I have to check the actual needles but they are standard Juki needles for industrial machines. Stitch length I really don't adjust much it is usually under 4 but over 3.

  • @callitags
    @callitags Před 9 měsíci +1

    I'm a fairly new sewist, so I'm not sure if my skill level is up to making this, but I sure am tempted. I do have a question. I understand that the band needs to be made of something that stretches, but does the visor piece also need to be made of something that stretches? And if so, what direction does the pattern piece get placed on it? I'm used to looking for grain line markings, but the pattern doesn't have those. Thanks so much!
    I like that you sew the stabilizer on before cutting the pieces out, to keep everything sturdy and in place.

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The visor does not need to be made of stretchy fabric so have fun picking fibres/fabrics that compliment each other. You can turn the pattern piece around if a few directions to pick the placement of any pattern that your fabric has for the visor. You can make a statement with this pattern. It is a good pattern to learn about hat making. Just take your time. You have asked great questions so I am certain you will nail this!! If not on your first cutting, definitely the second!! Keep me posted!! Tori

    I'm having so much trouble sewing the brims on my hats. My machine won't do all the layers. Does it come out good if I use a lighter stabilizer? Or do you have any other ideas? I only seem to be having luck with the toque and the headband. I'm not a hat wearer but I love your hats and wear the toque all the time when I walk my dog. Thank you for the patterns and videos.

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 6 měsíci

      Sorry to hear about your troubles and I suspect that since all machines are not created equally that it could be that four layers of fleece and interfacing may be to thick for your feed dogs. You can try using micro fleece for the underside of the brim and micro fleece for the lining. Let me know if that works. If you don't have micro fleece try a quilting cotton for your lining cut on the bias so it will stretch a bit.

    Hi! I’m trying to draft a basic hat pattern for my 62.5cm head and was wondering: the cap top that has the dart in it, is the finished circumference the same as your head’s circumference? If not, how much of a difference and why? My thanks!!! ❤

      For this cap, always a bit larger, should match the length of the top of the band which will also be longer than your head circumference. Comfort is key to loving hats. At the top of the hat, the head circumference is smaller than the part of your head above your eyes and eyebrows where the bottom of a hat usually rests. This hat is sort of square so the band is the same measurement at the top and bottom. Other caps and hats may taper at bit to be perhaps smaller than your head circumference at the top of the band versus the bottom. I hope that helps!! Thanks for watching! Tori
