  • This winter fleece headband pattern is a wonderful fleece hat sewing tutorial. This project is a great source of Christmas gift ideas for 2022. Part of our deep dive sewing fleece hats for cooler weather tutorials. I also show you how I make my pins and other trims for these easy to make headbands! This is an easy sewing project or beginner level sewing project so just about anyone who understands how to operate a sewing machine can make them!!
    Use Polar Fleece for this project. Important Note - You may need to make adjustments to the width, the part that goes around your head, due to variations in the Fleece Fabric that you use versus the fabric that I use in this video. After you have sewn the back seam, try the headband on your head to make sure that the fit is not too loose or too tight before making any further seams.

    Our business started 36 years ago selling headbands to a hockey team and sports retailer in the Niagara area of Ontario. So headbands are kind of in our DNA here at Mad Cap Hats. This headband has been designed by Tori Capes, Certified Milliner, to give a professional look to a very simple sewing procedure that requires no gaps in the seams to turn right side out or closing up a turning seam. The seams are sewn on the outside and incorporated and celebrated to become part of the modern look of the design! You can use an overlock stitch or other decorative stitch from a sewing machine or leave them unfinished. We use both our wide 3 thread serger and a narrow marrow edge serger with a slight wave in the stitch for completing the look of our bands. For the bands that we sell to customers we use a serger to finish two outside seams that are part of the design. If you don't have a serger, I show you how to make a neat job of sewing the seams. The band will still look great!
    In this video I also show you how I make my flower pins. When I refer to craft felt, I mean the stiff felt that is marketed as Eco Felt Stiff. I use the stiff rather than the soft felt to make my pin backs and the pins I use are hard steel safety pins, nickel plated, 28mm in length or 1 1/16 of in ch in length. This is referred to as size 1. You can get both of these items online from any number of vendors. I use a Big Shot hand propelled or hand cranked machine and the thick dies they make that will cut fabric to cut my flower pieces.
    You can make the headbands narrower in depth or longer but adjusting my pattern. It is that easy. I suggest cutting your pieces just shy of your head circumference by about 1/4 or 6 mm.
    Watch our video about how to measure your head if you need some help determining your head circumference.

    If you didn’t know the persons head measurements, are there some good average measurements?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 8 měsíci +1

      If the person knows you are making them a hat or headband, ask them if most hats in stores fit them or if they find them too big on average or too small. If most fit them the average head size is 22.5 inches or 57.5 cm for a woman and 60 cm or 23.5 inches for a man.

    Won't the stitches pop when pulled just using the straight stitch?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 6 měsíci

      I have not had a problem but you can add some extra lenght if your machine is sewing tight. I just use a straight stitch but you can use a stretchy one if you are concerned! Thanks for watching, Tori

    Love all your tutorials..what stich do you use to sew fleece so the stitches don't break when garment is stretched?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před rokem +1

      Sandra I just used my straight stitch. That is why the headband is almost cut to head size. Fleece will vary too so before you use a server or finish up on the around the head seams, try it on to make sure the fit is good.

    Where did you buy your Big Shot and templates?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před rokem

      Hi Lena ... I got them a few years ago. The big shot you can get on Amazon, the dies are harder to find but I saw a bunch on Amazon the other day and I hope to add a link eventually to the ones that I use. Probably will do that after Christmas. I think there is a good supply on a website called Crafts Direct as well. I must of bought some there since I get emails from them everyday! Just doing a quick check and yes Crafts Direct has the Big Shot on sale. You want to get the thicker dies, Bigz dies if you decide to do this. I added a template for flowers and you might find printing that out on freezer paper a much cheaper alternative! The big shot is great if you are going to make lots of things that require fast precision cutting.
