  • This new technique produces a knotted turban headband that is comfortable to wear and 'sew' easy to make!!! Your sewing business will love this one folks! And making it a bit wider than usual means lots of texture and pleating to play with.
    Wear this with the knot at the front, off to the side or at the back for a beautiful wide band across your forehead. One seam at the top and one that joins the sides. Some magic with the scissors. Welcome to your new favorite headband! Your customers will love it too! Start a new Etsy business with this one design ... make sure to highlight that it can be worn with the knot at the front or back. At least two headbands in one!!
    Inspired by a recent video on the Spanish Channel Estadistica Datos del Mundo @CoserConUlyana The video can be found here • Only Two Seams / Winte...
    She created a wider band in two layers and my edited version of her technique is the one I used as an example to make the fleece band I model at the end of the video. I have tweaked her instructions and pattern to come up with a great method for making a single piece of fabric band, an everyday style band from regular knit fabrics, eliminating some of the depth, width, a seam and some of the bulk around the knot. Try her's too!!! It is terrific. Experiment and come up with your own modifications. The bottom line is that this technique eliminates some of the bulk around sewing a faux knot. I find if so much more comfortable to wear than the version I have been making for customers for years! Gracias @CoserConUlyana
    To make a band for your own head using medium weight or light weight knit fabric, your width of fabric (going with the stretch) is a bit less than your head circumference. You will be removing some of this length in the center as well so if you want to make a deeper V cut on each side, cut the starting piece to match your head circumference. My head is 22.5 inches or 57.5 cm so my starting piece is 22 inches or 56 cm. I like my bands in this weight of fabric extra deep since you can scrunch them up to make them narrow, so my depth is 9 inches or 23 cm.
    For the fleece band, I cut my head size for width and the fleece piece was cut at 22.5" x 5.5" or 57.5 cm x 14 cm and the knit piece which is a medium to heavy weight legging style knit, was cut to 22.5" x 4" or 57.5 cm x 10 cm. Once they were sewn together at both long edges, I centered the knit on the front side with a border of fleece wrapping around. I love the effect of the fleece feeding into the knot.

    LOVE IT!!!
    I’ve made dozens and dozens of twisty headbands over the last few years, but your “V” is BRILLIANT!!! That “V” cut really pulls the seam into the twist. That makes a huge difference.
    LoL. I’m over here 🤦🏻‍♀️ myself because I never thought of cutting that little “V”!

      Tee hee! It is from Spoonflower.com ... modern jersey knit but I have it on cotton too. You can pick from so much artwork to print on the fabrics that you want. The modern jersey knit and the cotton linen blend are my favorites!

      Thank you Fliss! I don't know where you live but if it is cold for part of the year you might like the Winter Cloche with the swoosh brim and deeper fit. Designed originally for hair loss (cancer survivor here) but everyone loves it for warmth as it covers the back of your head. Your comment is such a lovely one to start my day. Grateful. Tori

      Hi Tori. I'm in Oamaru, North Otago, New Zealand moving into summer here - 30oC yesterday! I'll have a good look at the Winter Cloche thanks. My problem is the a can't stand wearing a wig and tend to overheat so light weight stretchy all over head wear is best for me. I do find it hard to find light weight stretchy, breathable, fabrics though. I've done a few sew up beanies that are ok but not really that great, so I was pleased to find your site and start sewing again. I'll see if I can adapt this headband to a 'hat' and let you know how I got on.

      I know, right!! 😂Had that in cotton fabric during the COVID mask making era. That band was one I made for a customer order. That is fabric from Spoonflower, the artist has lots of cheeky prints like this!! Thanks Wanda!

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před rokem

      I have the long scarves, the Winter Cloche and I will have a knit tube beanie ready to release next week. Stay in touch! The fleece toque has also been very popular with chemo patients for years. That hat is called Winter Toque on the channel. Patients tell me they wear it indoors and out as feeling cold is often a side effect.

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před rokem

      Julia, the top for the Winter Toque and the Winter Cloche is the same as the Pillbox hat you made already. Add the earflap cuff to the Pillbox as that cuff was designed for hats we made way back when for chemo patients. It has evolved as mainstream for everyone now. Start with the Toque, the video is here. czcams.com/video/6s9g8mmaFYs/video.html

    I’m so excited!! I just discovered your channel from your Etsy shop. I have a couple of your patterns in my cart to purchase. Question - what is your favorite place to buy material? And can you tell me where the yellow fabric, I think it says “perhaps sweat will help” can be purchased?

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před rokem +1

      Belinda, I got that from Spoonflower!! It is called Modern Jersey Knit. You will love Spoonflower, you pick the designs and have them custom printed on different fabrics. Modern Jersey Knit is my fave for headbands. I have had that swearing print made on cotton fabric during our Fabric Face Mask making days. Thanks so much!!!! Tori

  • @cherylring656

    I can’t tell. Did you stitch along the serger edge after you pinned it? I didn’t see that happen but don’t know why you pinned along that. After you stitched the two ends the serger seam kinda looks like it was stitiched so the serger seam was enclosed like a French seam. I’m not sure

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před rokem

      The serger has a straight stitch as part of the inside edge of the serge so maybe that is what is confusing. I use the serger to sew the two long edges together, the part that goes around the head, into a tube and then my sewing machine to finish the rest. Hope that helps! Tori

    Which fabric do i pick from joann theres so much stretchy fabric im lost😭

    • @madcaphats
      @madcaphats  Před 9 měsíci

      Ask them for help. Tell them you want to make a headband. You want a poly knit that would be stretchy. I use a lot of spoonflower "modern jersey knit". It is reliable and great to work with. A Lot of the sellers on Etsy use that too. Start with a proven winner or with good advice from the staff of sewers at Joann's! Good luck! Tori
