They transport me back to childhood, when life was simpler and family meant the entire world to people. I’ve had the flu this week and last, so I’ve been hanging around enjoying the videos. my grandmother, God rest. told me that turnips were only ready to harvest after the first frost. I have eaten turnips and turnip greens but never seen them cooked together like that. My Mother never cooked them, so I didn't grow up eating them very much. However my Grand Mother, Gladys was her name. Fed them to me as a child and she boiled them in a pot with sliced potatoes. Served them with butter, salt and pepper. But i was taught to peal them twice to remove the outer rind. next time I will try them with the greens and fatback. God Bless Love you Guys !

I think there are more degrees of doneness for beans than there are for steak. Pinto or Northern beans I do the bean setting twice in the Instant Pot (80 minutes) and the high setting of slow cook for 10 hours or more. Pintos I soak overnight and Northerns I don't soak. I know most people don't like theirs that way but, that's how I like mine.

I deseeded some jalapeños from the garden and cooked in with them. I like the broth better too but I let it cook down until it's more like a gravy. I made some of my gluten free cornbread which I will crumble into a bowl and cover with the beans and broth. Some fresh tomato and onion wedges along with radish and cucumber slices will complete the quintessential Appalachian supper.

Looks so good. Here in Florida it doesn't usually get a frost before the turnips are ready but 2 years ago I planted a small batch in a grow bag that claimed they were extra sweet and early. They WERE sweet and delicious. Just don't remember what kind they were but a new variety. It is hard to wait on nature when our taste buds are screaming - LOL. Your carrot cake was the best finish for this garden meal.

My MawMaw used to make me wash the greens in a tub out by the back door. She said I had to rinse them at least 4 times to make sure they were clean. I'd peel the turnips and cut them. I loved the smell of greens cooking in the pot. It was comforting to me.

When I was growing up, we had soup beans at least twice a week and my mom never soaked them. She just cooked them in a pot on the stove all day, they were so good. She would look at every bean Lol She would sit at the table and spread a layer of dry beans in her left hand and pick through them one by one. She would toss out even the broken ones. I sure miss her cooking and I miss her💔 Thanks, Tipper, for the trip down memory lane for me. ❤

Awww that’s not weird. We are all a big homestead community. I watch videos almost every meal that I’m alone because it keeps me company and it’s one of the only times during a day that I’m still. Won’t it be wonderful when we’re all together in heaven one day and enjoy supper together. ♥️👩‍🌾
