The way I see it, some of the major differences between the tanto and the bowie in "combat" are wound channels and hand protection. Although the latter is not applicable to this vid. A Bowie makes a wide stab wound, the tanto makes a deeper yet narrower wound. At the end of the day (and in my opinion), the bowie is an American tanto and the tanto is a Japanese bowie,Both can put in work and put enemies out of your misery after all.
Those are actually my two favorite designs. Many people down the Tanto because they think it's not practical. Apparently it was practical in the orient for hundreds of years for multiple tasks other than fighting Lol
For sure mate. Some of my first knives were total crap, they’re still yet to prove themselves.😂 Some surprised me, an old machete ($5) that I bought in about late nineties, still gets used and keeps up with my Tramontinas. Before all these ‘labelled’ steels, buying a knife/machete used to be a crap shoot. I’ve still got all the knives from 20 years ago. I don’t have the heart to throw them out, they served me well before I became a knife snob.😂 Now, I’m lucky enough to have some really nice knives. One day I’ll own a DBAD bowie/knife.😉
This doesn't surprise me. A lot of Filipino short swords and long knives (like the garab, for instance) have relatively slim blades like the tanto and work for both fighting and bushcraft.
Great comparison brother. I will admit because I have zero experience with a proper Japanese style tanto to being surprised at it’s toughness. Pretty freakin’ cool.
Wow I’m impressed definitely didn’t think the tanto would hold up to that type of work. Maybe you could show us how to sharpen a katana? because I haven’t found an easy way without needing a full polishing after.
Good comparison video! I always knew that these knives are the "do all" equivalents of their respective countries. You played both of these knives down the middle without bias towards either one. Although I am a Cold Steel man with a bias toward their Tanto point myself, i do own a first edition Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist. It is a tough knife and it is the only Bowie that I own, compared to the 9 Tanto style blades that I also own. Thank you for this vid!
America Bowie Japan Tanto Yemen Jambiya Afghan Pesh kabz Nepal. Kukri Ethiopia jile Somalia bilao I love how Each nation has its own signature style blade
Great Video showing the ability and use of both blades for just about anything . Don't care if its a so called budget knife they still perform and get the task and job done regardless of who makes them like you said. The Tanto shows why its a durable knife with a good blade and with a proven history just like the Bowie knife has .
That tanto has a sweeping edge that trails and acts like a belly when chopping. It's very pronounced on cold steel tanto fixed blade like the recon tanto for example.
@@DonnieBAllDay I get that man. We've been doing a lot of different stuff too. And thanks to u getting us started with fatwood we've been doing those too.

I am a Bowie lover and have a few I also own a couple of Tanto’s but for hard use it’s down to how hard. If I was in the field then I’m gonna have both. 🐸😎👍.
Great vrs. I had a kabar tanto that worked great . And added it's a combat blade it had a great advantage for the stabby stabby ! . I have been out with both bars both did on par with the other
To do sebuko the tanto is perfect 😂 but when it comes to toughness and strength and stability the Bowie is better! Great comparison brother, stay safe brother, love you❤️
the Bowie is far more versatile. THe tanto was made for fighting and its not much good for anything else. THe Bowie knife is good for rough stuff, bushcraft, fighting chopping you name it.
Your tanto sems to be an O-tanto or a Ko-wakizashi(masters in japan call this a tanto as well), based off the fact that it has a Tsuba gaurd, and a traditional tsuka wrap. I'm also saying thisvbecause the yanto is built to be a hidden weapon, hidden under clothing, and it seemed too long, as it was soemthing meant to be easily pulled from under clothing, in cases of self defense. They would often warp it to their bodies in a fashion so they could draw it quickly without drawing attention, as it was hidden by the cloth
The only way I could rate this is Jim Bowie vs samurai I believe in a fight the samurai would win but I'm a true Texan for me Jim Bowie wins great video
In the spirit of your SZCO cheap knife that can get it done I found a hidden Gem of a knife it is called the Swamill Ark -N- Saw Bowie $22.99 on Amazon it is made from a saw blade and it is a wood buster but why pay that when you can go to Chicago knifeworks and get it fo $12 shoot get 2 cause you will want to lol .

I really wasn't expecting the bowie and the tanto to be so comparable.
Me neither. Haha

exactly!
I like that you test out budget knives. Not everyone can afford a $200 chopper.
Good on ya mate, keeping it real.😉👍🏼
I like your work on the bowie.

Excellent dbad, great comparison. Thank you. Love those szco budget beaters.
It was a versus that needed to be put out there
naginata blades had bellies and were semi commonly cut down and made into tantos and wakizashi, so tanto with Bowie type bellies also exist.
Yes, but not common

You can find this one at BudK or United Cutlery. I get some other ones at Truekatana

Two very cool designs
Bowie is more practical in a zombie apocalypse because the tanto is not a good survival camping knife
Awesome video brother, I would go with the Bowie all the way.
they are bangers
How to wear a tanto for concealed carry, like a god damn ninja?
Easy. Wear it on the inside
I like tanto and it's easier to sharpen on a flat stone for me
I use ceramic rod. They are easier to hone up than people think

a fun one to shoot

It does equally well and that's a bit surprising
How about the kizlyar supreme tantos?
