@@ricardos.f.f.4979 it'll probably get released sometime after
I love Sensei's little smile when he shows something sneaky.
I noticed that too! ^_^
I agree. He clearly loves sharing his craft with others.
I live for that grin...
SAME!
👍
The thing about the sleeve made me realize how some kata moves may seem completely arbitrary and redundant today but actually made so much sense at the time.
Dude that’s like 90% of why westerners don’t trust eastern styles irl anymore 😂
There are still arm braces that can hold a Tanto. :P
But yeah, always gotta take context into account! :)
Sensei is a living legend I admire him
外国の方向けのショウゴさんのご説明なんですが、刀や技の名称が「英語ならこんな言い方になるんだ。」と新鮮でいつも楽しく拝見しています。
To say I "enjoy" watching these videos is an understatement. My eyes are dry after each one because I don't think I'm blinking during the entire thing. 0.0
The tanto is a beautiful example of a compromise design that doesn't sacrifice much in either direction, be it cut or thrust.
I know that there's actually quite a variety in terms of Tanto design (mostly how pointy it gets, and how much profile tapering, but some were complete outliers such as the forward curved tanto, the yari style tanto, etc.), but it doesn't get close in the variety of designs Europeans experimented with because they tried to fit a specific purpose. Today, most think of just the stereotypical miniature sword, which is often referred to as a cruciform dagger, but for war, rondel daggers were very popular (little cutting ability, disk pommel, and very thick blades for thrusting into armor). Then, there were daggers like kitchen knives, bowies, and on the other hand, the stiletto, which had no blade at all and there were special parrying daggers, etc. etc.
It'd be great to see Tonfa and Bo techniques in defense against Tanto and Wakizashi.
The tips about drawing the weapon seem simple, but are incredibly clever.
Thank you for these videos! Learning about the History of Japan through the medium of these disciplines and techniques is truly a rewarding experience for me! You can really sense sensei's refined spirit and it is always a pleasure to watch! Please continue to produce these wonderful collaboration videos!!
Looking forward for on-line lessons with Seki Sensei. Please, make it happen. It'll be a real treat to learn from him.
This is easily my new favorite channel. It has inspired me to train budo again! Seki-Sensei and Shogo-San ありがとうございました !
What a great video. Thank you.
I am curious about Seki Sensei's experience with grappling.
I recently was at a seminar with an instructor who specializes in dagger, wrestling and armored combat, especially from the Fiore manuscripts. There were a large number of things that I got from it, but one of the major ones was wrestling in a weapons context.
One thing I thought was interesting was the technique that hid the dagger looked so much like it was a setup for a wrestling. (7:53)
Just saying, I LOVE these videos.
I'm a practitioner of HEMA, specifically the Liechtenauer tradition of longsword. I appreciate that Japan has a living history of martial arts. Many of the techniques that I see here remind me of my own studies.
One critique I have is to get some safety gear and try to make these techniques work under pressure. HEMA has a lot of equipment readily available now; though mostly styled after European history (there are some Asian styles becoming available)
Also there are sparring-safe katana!!!! (they're steel)
Sigi Forge and Castille Armory
HEMA neglects it’s wrestling a lot. Even though it is fundamental to fencing. Also, a person would also think that the dagger would be the most prevalent weapon instead of a sword.
@@ericfierro1693 That really depends upon where you train. I've seen schools where e.g. ringen is as important as armed combat if not the absolute base. I do agree with you about the dagger being the prevalent weapon. Ofc this is depending upon the situation but most of the combat is/ends as mainly close combat
@@ericfierro1693technically the most historically prevalent european medieval weapon is actually a spear, and not the sword or the dagger. And the wrestling/grappling aspect depends entirely on what tradition of HEMA you are dedicating yourself to. There are plenty that orchestrate many grappling techniques depicted in treatises and manuscripts throughout history, though it is true that many of the “mainstream” and more popularized HEMA groups focus primarily on blade interactions and single 1 on 1 duels
I really love all videos from this brilliant channel!
Thanks for showing this
Definately I would like to learn more about the use of the tanto. Thank you Seki Sensei so much for teaching us today's lesson!
Excellent video. Lots of interesting informations about tantô. Thank you
All your videos are excellent: it's nice to see the less flashy, but practical.
Awesome video thank you for all the hard work
The table of contents is very useful! Thanks! And of course, excellent video!
You can tell seki sensei is just a a littlebit uncomfortable talking on camera...right up until hes explaining a move, then his smile lights up. Great series
He has been doing CZcams for almost three years, he is quite comfortable!
Great video, thank you so much for posting
Thank you for posting your videos. I learn something new every time I watch & love the Japanese history. . Thanks 🙏☸️🇬🇧
Thanks love the teacher and his mentorship
Excellent video thank you
Very cool Shogo thanks for sharing.
More, more 👍🙏 Take care. Stay safe 🙏
John and Kate
Wonderful addition to your other show, thank you…🙇
Superb technical skill.
Beautiful video much respect
Beautifully demonstrated, thank you so much.
He makes it looks so easy and fluid, the skill. Fan girl of Seki Sensei ❤love watching these videos, thank you. Always enjoy the historical references
Can't wait to see some kusarigama in action
Absolutely ! Scott
Great video!
love to see more stuff, great video thanks
Big Tanto fan here!
So awesome!
nice techniques with the tanto, thanks seki sensei!
Finally, thanks for focusing on the tattoo! Agape , appreciation and affection 🙏❤🖖!
Very interesting!
I love kobudo and koryu so keep it coming!
Thank you for sharing. These where beautiful waza.
sensei is awesome!!!!!! really loved this with the tanto . . . gottta get one now lol
I like these videos very much because despite not being able to train, it's still possible to learn a lot of important lessons, the obvious one this time is the bigger ≠ better, (see 5 shaku sword unsheathing), and all the strategy that surrounds any technique shown in the video
Thank you Seki Sensei, this was very enlightening and done beautifully. New subscriber here 😁
Best video I’ve seen on all things Tanto! OriGato!
Bought one today, not only it’s a defense weapon. The techniques and history makes it art.
it would be great to see more on the use on the tanto, both kinds
Yay more tanto moves i can practice in my apartment!
Very Nice, Thank You. I love my Tanto.
Thank you for sharing some of your Culture with us.
"everyone should take care when facing the perilous dagger, and your arms, hands and elbows must go quickly against it, to do these five things, namely: take away the dagger; strike; dislocate the arms; bind the arms; and force your opponent to the ground. And never fail to do one or the other of these five things; And may he who seeks to defend himself protect himself in this way." Maestro Fiore Dei Liberi, The Flower of Battle.
Fiore said he feared the dagger the most, because it was so swift and hard to counter
Impressive, "Another Level" Thank You.💓⏳💀
Dude I love your videos. I am in New Jersey USA. I plan on buying all Asayama Ichiden books and videos so I can learn. I hope to meet you all one day!
Thank you so much. Had only heard before that some blades could be hidden by the sleeve before use. Glad to see it first hand. Had heard a weapon could be passed to another secretly from sleeve to their sleeve in certain situations as well.
this is fascinating.
Nice. More please
❤ Beautiful, and it is great to see a true master demonstrating and explaining the waza as he goes ! Versus some of the Do(way) arts that have forgotten what the kata are doing. 🙂
Scott
Seki sensei is impressive and formidable! You're lucky to have training with him, Shogo!
Impressive tanto moves!
Kamas and tonfas are so much fun ❤️
Another really cool video. Thanks again for the great content! Now I wanna buy a tanto... hahaha
I bought some swords a while back, one was a katana and the other was a tanto, glad to see I can apply this for self defense!
Thank you.I would like to learn more
I like the way seki sensei moved his leg after sheathing the tanto. Such a clean move. Makes me want to see swordsman ship mixed with martial arts.
Thanks for another interesting video.
I knew that tantojutsu was rare in the USA but did not expect it to be rare in Japan as well.
I've never heard of a Tanto as a short katana. Learned something new. Thanks
Very interesting! Tendo Ryu, as a sogo-bujutsu, uses kaiken/aikuchi & tanto in the naginata-jutsu kata. There are also separate sets of kata for tanto & wakizashi.
I came across this video. Interesting 🤔🧐...Well, in the US my "Tanto" collection consists of the more modern James Williams CRKT Hissatsu 7 inch fix blade with mirror 🪞 finished s/s and a 2nd one with a blacked out blade finish...And a CRKT combat folder version with speed safe type action with double locks...As well as the Heiho 3.1 inch compact folder...
Greetings sensei, l enjoy your videos on special weapons and l.would like to see more in the future, the one on tantos and short swords is a good one, l am a former student of akido, and see a video on the broken and short staff.
I want a tanto now! I guess i’ll add it to my wish list lol
I love the other guy's expression at 5:40. He knows what that tanto can do if Sensei botches the exhibition. 😅
OMG here's another great thing for me to train in the future. 😍
I like this.
Awesome. Please, online lessons and come to El Paso TX. ONLINE LESSONS PLEASE 🙏
Thankyou 🙏
Thanks
I always like the short swords for close combat or short tanto knives for on duty and off duty carry, enjoy sensei videos..
I ve always believed martial arts is all about speed. When 2 opponents are equally skilled in any form, the one who hits first wins. That tanto sure gives an advantage. though less range of course, so more situational.
thank you for this demonstration
Perhaps a video about the Kwaiken too?
It’ll be another great video.
I would love to learn this in it’s interity.
the tanto in place of a wakizashi just cleared up a game detail in ghost of tsushima where he wears a katana and tanto daisho
どうもありがとございます!
Nice 😎
question for people who live in japan: im planning to go to japan in the summer for 2 or 3 months, one of the things i want to do is to learn how to use a katana any recommendations or places to go.
ps: is summer the best time of the year to get the most out of my experience in japan ??
I love the Japanese, very professional in everything they do
subbed
8:39 literal cloak-and-dagger!
I have a few questions for you sensei. How do you attach the sageo to the tanto scabbard? What is the normal length of a tanto sageo? Once the sageo attached to the scabbard, how do you attach it to your obi ou hakama? A short video would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thank you for the nice video Shogo. Could you please ask Seki Sensei how to tie the sageo on the saya of the tanto? Is there any particular reason / function for tying it that way? Thank you!
Thank You Seki Sensei, really interesting. Being a Woman i would gravitate towards Tantō rather than Katano but i would use Katano if trained. I am interested in the Onna-musha or Woman Warriors, times are unstable & as much as there is weaponry, it damages all life so i am of the belief that Woman especially, must learn how to defend using Sword(s) & Aikido, will protect Woman & Family... I am Peaceful but i strongly believe in Self Defense. 🙏
Very cool, for the algo
Thank you for the short lessons you are sharing..I admire Japanese swordmanship, though I'm a Filipino. Can you give some insights about kodachi, it's difference from a wakizashi or katana? Hope you will make more videos like these. Thanks
Do you train with a blade in your Filipino Art ? I have some training in Japanese ko Ryu and with the Filipino PTK , I have met GT. That is a great combative Art ! The Japanese Ko Ryu arts are real but 400 years removed from real use, as ware PTK is still used. When you train in Ko Ryu you can recognize the real waza or movements that are preserved but the Japanese kata try to look less bloodthirsty ! Scott
I'm not actually a trainee in filipino martial arts, Scott, though I would love to if I have the time. I am actually hooked into sword smithing and I got interested in Japanese swords a few years ago. It's not a good irony to be a Filipino making Japanese swords, but I just love it. You know some like to take pictures of the sunset, some play the piano. I just like to spend time at my forge and turn a piece of steel into a good knife/sword. That's why I asked about the difference between types of Japanese swords. Thanks for the invitation anyway.
As a student of Japanese Martial Arts, I love this series. Domo Arigato Gosaimasu for sharing your Martial Arts and Culture.
These techniques are quite formidable if I'm being honest. It would seem that the, "Polite", and, "Well Positioned", Gentry had these skills by necessity in Ancient Japan....and were not to be trifled with. Seki Sensei, you strike me as a serious yet fair Man and Instructor. These are truly fascinating lessons. Thank you.
These techniques with the tanto are VERY useful in closed enviroments like rooms, corridors and halls of castles.
Imagine a carnage done by a well trained onna bugeisha during a tea ceremony in a closed room using a tanto like a snake and each step and strike is like a dance...
@@Jamhael1 Agreed.
that stap after cutting the face - i feld uneasy. i dont train with tanto or wakizashi. Having that move done to student must feal uneasy. Even if it is a training sword. Seki-sensei teaches very well, i want to thank him for his teachings.
thank you. can you teach us how to duel wield katana and tanto like master Musashi?
So to be good with a tanto you basically gotta be a pretty good wrestler too, cool
Sensei. When you attack from the kneeling position can you use your free hand to trap an opponent’s hand(hands) to slow or stop their drawing their katana? Thank you.
